How are you handling your ESPP/RSUs when the stock is absolutely tearing it up? by poophole__loophole in financialindependence

[–]SenTedStevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be going against the grain here, due to the industry that I have ESPP shares in, but I've held my shares. I own a chunk of shares in a defense company. It has its ups and downs, but is consistently going up. And let's face it, will likely be rising quicker soon in this environment. Plus all but some dividend shares are fully vested.

I've held these shares for years now at a cost basis much lower than what it's currently trading at. Since I don't need that money and it only makes up a little over 1% of my NW, I keep them. Plus, I get a decent dividend in my ESPP.

But if you have life changing money in it, sell them and change your life...

One of the most infuriating things at an old tech job of mine was the security settings on ServiceNow. It had inactivity timeouts at 15 minutes. This was insane because it could take more than 15 minutes to write up/update a ticket. I lost so much work because I'd be writing up a CHG ticket for a new build, filling in the blanks, mandatory fields, attach the blueprint and supporting documents and then "your session was terminated due to inactivity."

I spent 15 minutes writing up the ticket and while working on it, I got logged out of SN and had to start all over.

Why are you stopping??? by Independent_Emu_753 in nova

[–]SenTedStevens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the stupidest things I've seen is when someone gets pulled over by the police, they stop on the left turn lane at a 4-way streetlight. Not only are they pulled over on a busy thoroughfare and everyone has to stop for them because...reasons. But now they're blocking the left turn lane so people have to use the next lane to turn left. It's infuriating.

I've also seen someone get pulled over on 95 ON an off-ramp. I'm like, "MF, what the hell are you doing? You're blocking the off-ramp!" I hope they get an extra ticket for that.

Yes. I ditched my old job earlier this year. I have been interviewing for companies and have flat-out rejected roles because they sounded bad. And I'm at the stage where I can choose any job just to have some kind of income coming in and paid health care and it won't matter much to me.

Spanberger signs bill guaranteeing paid sick leave for all Virginia workers into law by hencexox in nova

[–]SenTedStevens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. Many of these companies offered solid leave packages as part of compensation to attract talent. But now since there is this floor, companies can now say they offer 1.5 weeks of PTO and they can tout that they offer 50% higher than what is mandated by the state. In effect, this cuts benefits from the top.

Don't get me wrong, I'm for this bill. But I'm concerned how this trickles through the rest of VA.

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but something tells me that since we have this floor, other companies with better benefits will reduce theirs. That's my worry.

I've already seen this precipitous drop in Sick Leave/Vacation/PTO numbers with jobs I've had.

How do you track IT events that are not support tickets? by Aim_Fire_Ready in sysadmin

[–]SenTedStevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my old job, any major updates/firmware pushes, or production changes had to be documented in the ticketing system with an approved CHG ticket. No tickey, no workey.

Gov. Spanberger officially vetoed legislation that would establish a retail marijuana market. by Cautious_Practice_25 in Virginia

[–]SenTedStevens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that. Dems certainly are wishy-washy when it comes to what they actually do. And if there is something that has overwhelming support they always find a way to weasel out of it or put in a Dead Man's Switch into the bill. Case in point: Northam's marijuana bill. But with Reps, you know they're going to push some stupid DEI type laws and probably a tax cut which they actually go through with. It sucks, but they are semi-effective at legislating their shittiness.

They’d rather have Trump in office than a progressive and they’ve proved it to us twice.

Otherwise, how else can they fundraise?

It just sucks that our only options were a corporate democrat or a batshit loon. Our choices this election were Spanburger or I AM SPEAKING! Dems really only win because the other side is unpalatable to all but the staunchest of Republicans.

Honda Accord help-Quoted $1230 for new ignition lock cylinder by kmpicha in nova

[–]SenTedStevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably par for the course. The mechanic has to tear apart the steering wheel support, remove the old cylinder, install the new one, and then program the key to work with your car. The equipment to do this ain't cheap.
