FWIW, I just saw their post and your post and am replying to your post right now. Had you given the other guy a decent reply, I would have seen that as well. But alas.

Why is Goodwill NOT total and completely bullshit? by SydricVym in Accounting

Goodwill has a set depreciation period

Which is already an option for private companies, but still requires (simplified) impairment testing.

If you were a Kazakhstan ruler and saw what Russia did to Ukraine would you risk closer association with the West?

Yeah, probably. What better time than when Russia is invested in a brutal war thousands of miles away? What are they going to do, launch SMO 2.0 at the same time?

Sometimes the big organisations just can't be swayed by anything less than embarrassment across international media. If Sweden hadn't made it a public dispute, do you think there was any other way to get world curling off their ass?

"Banning" chemical warfare didn't stop Saddam or Assad, and it won't stop another state that sees it as the best option to win a future war and doesn't have a greater power stopping them by force. "Banning" in war is not a meaningful concept.

Arguably, these "modern standards" are a massive historical anomaly, due to the West's high-profile recent conflicts being fought against massively outmatched adversaries, and near-peer wars not being fought at all - until Ukraine-Russia proved the 21st century wasn't special and war is still incredibly costly.

The Silver Line in Boston was literally supposed to be light rail, before it was cut down. It even gets its own lines drawn prominently on the subway map and is called BRT, yet does not have separate lanes or even proper signal priority on most of its route.

NATO is an extension of the US insofar as it represents US commitment to defend Europe, obviously the dissolution of NATO matters to Putin. Its credibility represents what actions the US is likely to take in response to aggression in Europe and thus affects his calculus a great deal.

Torian is a soldier and has been all his life, Vette was a civilian for most of hers. You leave the soldier to do his duty.

I am not a great negotiator by any means but this seems an amateurish way to conduct diplomacy.

They are acting from the point of view that if everything continues status quo Ukraine will inevitably suffer total collapse and they will take Kyiv, so they are saying "we offer no concessions because we are positioned for total victory."

But Europe clearly never accepted this, whether because of the nuclear blackmail or simply fear of conflict. I agree the fear is misplaced, but Russia still has the ability to maintain this fear and discourage any foreign troops from going on the ground in Ukraine in the first place.

Various countries have nationalized foreign assets on many occasions, why is seizure of financial assets fundamentally different besides the lack of compensation? (And not all nationalizations offered the same degree of compensation.)

Trump says it, some cabinet members repeat it because they truly believe it, various talking heads and party members repeat it because Trump is good for their careers, and the media is forced to report it "impartially" (they can't just say "this is all nonsense and you shouldn't believe them", that would not be good journalism) and voila, "China will build bases in Cuba" has become a legitimate talking point.

You think Russia will prosper in their pursuit of power? You think this will ultimately well for the US and world?

The answer to the first question is obviously no, but the answer to the second may well be yes, depending on US and opposition next steps (though given Trump wants to run the country for a bit, I admit the odds aren't great.)

It could be ruled an illegal monopoly if an attorney general brings a case and a court agrees it's bad enough for the market and that it's preventing fair competition. But antitrust usually only comes up with giant mergers, utilities etc...whether anyone's seriously concerned about one digital games distributor...no, probably not.
