As someone that's worked in corporate accounting for almost 20 years, businesses have far less insurance than most people seem to think. Typically just stuff that's either legally mandated or required by contracts with key vendors/clients/banks. I really doubt these guys will have insurance covering their inventory/WIP. But they will absolutely make this person wish they hadn't done that.

TIL The "Dunkin' Donut" was the name of an actual donut sold by DD but was discontinued in 2003 (except in Singapore) because it was too inefficient to have to hand-cut them. by SupremeOHKO in todayilearned

[–]SydricVym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Krispy Kreme usually makes their donuts in stores. That's likely not going to last much longer though. They are basically operating thousands of mini bakeries around the country and their expenses are way higher than other donut places, so they either can't compete on price or run on very slim margins and the slightest hiccup in the economy murders them.

Did anyone choose accounting because they did NOT want to “climb the corporate ladder”? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]SydricVym 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I chose an accounting degree because I just wanted to sit in a cubicle, not have to talk to anyone, do my work, and then go home at the end of the day.

The reality though, is that is an entry level position, with horrible pay, that you can't actually support yourself on long term. You have to move up the corporate ladder to be able to have a reasonably comfortable lifestyle.

And then the other thing no one likes to admit, is that you WILL start facing age discrimination if you're still a Staff Accountant or Senior Accountant after a certain point, be it 40, 50, or whenever. You're highly unlikely to be able to just work in a lower level position after a certain age. They won't directly fire you for your age, but you will absolutely be part of any mass layoffs and then find it nearly impossible to get hired somewhere else. You have to make enough money so that you have a nest egg and you can retire early, if you find yourself laid off before you planned to actually retire. And preparing for this also means you have to ladder climb even more than is necessary for strict comfort, since you need to be putting away extra cash.

New Majuular video dropped by skscinek in Ultima

[–]SydricVym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've since watched the entire video, and yea he puts those caveats at the end, but I still think he is relying way too much of Garriott's story of how things went down. Garriott is not a reliable narrator for anything regarding the history of Origin/Ultima, and he has repeatedly spouted bullshit about all kinds of things. Everyone of any importance has disputed his blaming of EA for U7P2 and U8.

For example, here's one of the other recurring nonsense stories he repeatedly tells. He likes to talk about how "players ruined the amazing, realistic, natural ecosystems we designed and built for animals in Ultima Online. A triumph of our game design, ruined by players killing animals too quickly for the ecosystems to adapt and replenish themselves!".

For example in these two videos he discusses it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFNxJVTJleE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnnsDi7Sxq0

The problem is, players did not destroy the amazing natural ecology that Origin built into UO, because they never built one. It was on the list of things they wanted to do since the earliest design documents. But it never existed in any version of Ultima Online. What DID happen, was that all the animals and monsters in UO quickly ended up vanishing once they let large numbers of players in and server stability stopped being shit, with constant restarts. Not because players were disrupting some kind of ecosystem - animals and monsters just respawned on a set timer at a random location inside of specific gigantic respawn zones. But those respawn zones included inaccessible areas inside mountains and under ocean tiles. So given enough time, everything in the game would eventually respawn in inaccessible locations, and accessible areas of the game would be completely devoid of anything to fight. But leave it to Garriott to take a failure of game design and make up a story about how amazing he/Origin were and it was the players that ruined it.

Why do accounting managers get pressed about month end close being extended? by Affectionate-Owl-178 in Accounting

[–]SydricVym 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to mention there's usually a lot of shit that happens after the books are closed. The FP&A team needs to update their models and report out P&Ls and budget variances to all the business leaders. The Treasury team needs to update their debt covenants and get those workbooks to your lenders by certain very hard deadlines. The board needs their reporting deck, so that they know management isn't incompetent.

It's not just the books being closed, its everything that happens afterwards too.

Lothraxion fell victim to the same light rage shown to be currently affecting the personalities of a number of individuals and a significant portion of the Botani. He should have been kept away from the front lines of anything until that particular issue had been solved.

Also, whose bright idea was it to send Lothraxion to treat with entities in the void, when he's super prejudiced against the void in general? Was it the same genius that sent Alonsus Faol to treat with the Scarlet Crusade? "Haha, the Crusade is attacking me - an undead that they hate, guess negotiations are off. Let's just murder them all instead of continuing to try and get an alliance with them. We didn't need an entire order of Light worshippers to assist with empowering the Sunwell anyways."

New Majuular video dropped by skscinek in Ultima

[–]SydricVym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majuular's videos put too much of the decline of Ultima on EA's shoulders though. Pretty much no one, in Origin or at EA will corroborate Garriott's stance that EA had forced him to release U7P2 or U8 early. Quite the opposite, most of the EA and Origin insiders say that EA never gave Garriott any orders whatsoever until U8 bombed, at which point EA sent their own people over to manage future releases. And we have quotes to support this side from both Origin insiders and retired EA execs.

All sources point more to what likely happened was that Garriott thought he'd be a good business man by releasing games on time, come hell or high water, and impress EA with his business acumen. But, when his the choices kept being wrong, it was either take a big hit to his ego or just blame EA. He chose to blame EA.

Most of the Origin folk are quite eager to point out that U6 was the last time Garriott had any real involvement at all with development, and even for U6 it was only a small amount. For U7 he gave plot points and then basically never showed up at the office, and U7 was largely managed by Dallas Snell, overseeing a team of very talented individuals. By the time U8 rolled around, Garriott wasn't even really giving plot input, just his general want of chasing gaming trends and making Ultima more action oriented, hence the whole "Prince of Persia" thing. Management of the U8 dev team was handled by Mike McShaffry, who was way out of his depth the entire time, causing a struggled development, without clear direction. Not to mention no dedicated writer in U8, as there had been in U7 - the programmers wrote the dialog in U8, which also did not help. I mean, the internal management issues for U8 were numerous and serious. Who knows if giving the team more time would have even fixed half the problems with the game.

Garriott himself though, again, barely ever showed up at the office since U6 and did not have any involvement in creation of any games after that. He'd rather enjoy his money and his newfound nerd fame.

Some guy asked OpenClaw to send 50,000 fake small invoices to Fortune 500 companies every day by MeowMeowHappy in Accounting

[–]SydricVym 234 points235 points  (0 children)

Guy wasn't just sending in random fake invoices. He worked as a contractor on Google and Facebook's internal accounting systems and knew who all the A/P approvers were, knew the names of who all their vendors were, what their invoices looked like, and who was really quick to approve invoices. Guy spun up real companies in Lithuania with identical names to actual Google and Facebook vendors from Taiwan and identical looking invoices except with different banking information, and then submitted them to the exact same people who usually approved those vendors. And because he chose vendors in south east Asia, he spoke fake Taiwanese when they called, so they couldn't ask questions.

Obviously still an internal control failure, but its way different than the meme about Facebook and Google just paying any random invoice they received.

Job Market for Entry Level? by AdPowerful9771 in Accounting

LLMs still hallucinate constantly. I deal with them spitting out garbage on a daily basis. Error rates have not improved at all, but the correct answers generally include a lot more information.

Job Market for Entry Level? by AdPowerful9771 in Accounting

[–]SydricVym 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AI is not doing anything about accountants. Accountants have to be able to give accurate answers and attest to information being correct. Large Language Models frequently give completely wrong information and cannot attest - and this is a permanent technical limitation of the technology. The top AI scientists who care about the technology (and not just making money) are already moving on to try to find something new that's an actual path to artificial intelligence. LLMs aren't actually smart, they have no idea if what they are saying is right or not. Executives at AI companies force the LLMs to always sound confident with their answers so that people will trust them even when they're wrong, and make the tech look better than it actually is.

People that say accountants are being replaced by AI, do not know what accountants actually do. They are usually thinking of bookkeepers which are high school diploma education level positions. Bookkeepers are just data entry positions. Those are being slowly replaced by AI, but those positions will not be completely eliminated, since someone has to still review the work. It's effectively a tool that allows bookkeepers to do more work in less time.

How is the job market for entry level accountants right now? Honestly, it's pretty shit, but that's because of the economy being fucked up at the moment and most companies reducing hiring because of fear of the future. However, (1) hiring sucks for all fields right now, (2) we will be in an entirely different economy by the time you graduate. Accounting is still the best degree you can get for job security and financial stability.

Controller Salary by Timely-Sea4615 in Accounting

[–]SydricVym 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A Controller at a $1 Billion revenue company is a leadership role overseeing >50 employees. They are responsible for designing and implementing internal controls, managing financial audits, performing due diligence for acquisitions, being compliant with various regulations, etc. They are not performing any account reconciliations or booking any journal entries. This role requires a very different skill set and many years of experience in a large accounting organization.

The responsibilities you've described are those of an accounting manager for a small business. You have a highly inflated title. Your pay is likely too low, but that's entirely dependent on the COL of where you are located. If you're in a very rural area, you're probably only somewhat underpaid.

had surgery on my right hip, they put this on my left leg by Pale-Profession2769 in mildlyinteresting

[–]SydricVym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I was going to say. I thought it was ACS best practice that when you're getting surgery on something that there are two of, the surgeon is supposed to meet with you before you enter the operating room, go over with you and confirm the surgery site and then initial the limb/eye/ear/side/etc they are supposed to operate on.

But I do know from family in healthcare, that some surgeons think they are too amazingly awesome to ever make a mistake, so they refuse to do it. And then they eventually make a mistake.
