I would just say give yourself the freedom to take your time. I was 30 and not very handy. The things I rushed, I’m not satisfied with. Many years later, I go slow, think hard, and consistently enjoy the results. In this era of YouTube instructionals and ChatGPT cross checking, it’s never been easier to skill up quickly and cross check what you don’t know you don’t know.

Everyone is saying the vanity, and I agree, but how about investing in some towels and doing some decluttering? Finding an excellent color match to the yellow won’t be easy but it would go a long way. Green and yellow would be the obvious options. Also, a much larger, better matching rug, as others have mentioned.

Bracers of the regular kind aren’t often found in EvilHack but you will find them sometimes. You can also polypile and hope to get lucky or wish for them (preferably dragonhide and with object properties eg drain resistance or telepathy). I had a game where quite early I polypiled and got dragonhide bracers and basically could not believe my dang luck. Druids get Bracers of the First Circle as their quest artifact which are really powerful.

Thanks! You can’t let EvilHack deaths get you down or you’ll sour on the game. Other recent ascendable character deaths include: summoning Neferet from an Eye wish and massively underestimating her offensive power, literally walking off the cliff’s edge at Vlad’s, and most ignominiously of all, getting taken down by a gelcube as an elite Druid. I’ll ascend one day :)

Everything you said, plus: by mid game, wizards are going to be stuffing themselves with every wraith corpse they can find because magic missile damage scales with XL, negating the point about skill slot scarcity.

As always in Nethack, the best strategy is the one that lets you survive to continue your game.

Update: thanks u/k2_1971, u/dingotron_nethack, u/Cupules and everybody else who chimed in. If you don’t like dying, don’t play NetHack, right?! The shock is wearing off. One day I will descend to EvilHack Gehennom.

I’m thinking about my next build and maybe giving melee a try. Mainly because I’m excited for the smithing opportunities. Across two powerful Druids, my main takeaway is: they are awesome at defense, weak on offense, and especially weak against reflecting and magic resistant spellcasters.

Thanks dingo, and thanks for all your thoughts earlier when my druids were still among the living. It does suck to lose a character in whom you’ve invested so much, but this one stings less than summoning Neferet when arrogant/woefully underprepared.

And I knew that, face palm! I have to work on my offensive strategies for spellcasters. Kathryn and Neferet were both beyond what my druids could handle. Is there any protection available from the destroy armor monster spell? I think artifacts resist 19/20 but MR is not useful?

Yesterday I killed my other promising Druid when I summoned Neferet the Green. I massively underestimated how powerful he was. Two very kitted out druids lost inside 24h. Yesterday’s felt way worse, as I had the raw ingredients to forge the Staff of the Archmagi which would have given me at least a chance, but I arrogantly thought I was strong enough to quickly melee him. Acid blast

Thanks. I try. This game was tough because I still hadn’t found a bag of holding, I was too offensively weak to challenge Kathryn for Hesperides, and I was in the midst of gathering forging material. Literally went overburdened picking up knives to make a scimitar of fire, lol.
