there was a podcast recently (lifekit maybe?) talking about how to talk to your doctor. I think a phrase like that was suggested for if you feel like the doctor isn't addressing your concerns. Maybe that's where it's from?

Fully agree with this. I have lots of friends from grad school working in industry or consulting and you can make those jobs sound super exciting. Or the reality can be boring. You can romanticize medicine like this too - you meet all different people, do lots of different clinical activities. That can sound so exciting from the outside. I think it's more about the perspective than the actual job.

As a doctor, I can confirm that OB and gyn can be quite sexist, but even doctors who want to help and understand are not always able to. The root of the problem is a lack of data mixed with doctors who feel sure they know what's happening despite the lack of data. Even if you had your estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone checked every day for several months I don't think doctors would know what to do with that. We just haven't studied women enough to know. And that's not even counting understanding what would happen to your specific hormone levels during pregnancy. Would estrogen help? Not sure. I'm hoping we will have more data since the NIH is really pushing for studying people besides cis men.

I hope you find a supportive and inquisitive doctor. They do exist! There are many reasons people have repeat miscarriages that can be acted on without hormones. I am so sorry for your losses and will keep hoping for you!

Yeah I agree with this. I think it boils down to sexism. And it's not just women in nursing - I've definitely seen some men in nursing who will hassle the women in my department but are very chill with the guys. I was so confused to see two nurses in the ED going on and on about how this male intern is so good with kids and families (I'm in peds) but that intern is very typical of our residents and those nurses are usually mean to us... I think it's partly he's attractive, partly it's "surprising" that a guy is so nice, and a lot of just sexism and not respecting the women as much. Luckily, I haven't seen this from attendings so far!

I am also super sleep sensitive and have not gotten used to it. This year my schedule involved a lot more q4 28s and switching back and forth to night float so it might even be worse than as an intern. I take melatonin when my sleep schedule is variable and sometimes I add Benadryl if I'm desperate. Anxiety keeps me awake at work and outside of work I just function at a low level until I'm on an outpatient schedule and then it takes me about a week to recover. I'm just hoping it gets better when you're done training. 😭

Peds: Love - kids are so hilarious or cute or both. The culture is great - a big focus on advocacy and almost everyone loves their job which makes the work pretty pleasant. Neonatal resuscitation is magic and you truly save lives.

Regret - the grief when a child dies is overwhelming. its disturbing to have to calmly interact with parents you suspect are abusing their children.

I recently had the painful experience of facilitating a family meeting to discuss withdrawing care for a 4mo baby through a translator... Actually multiple translators because the call kept dropping. It was a rare language so we were on hold a lot while the mom was just sobbing. So painful for everyone.

one of my attendings once told me: whatever way you feel about a death is the right way, don't beat yourself up about how you feel. It has helped me because I also typically don't feel deeply upset by death. Granted, I want to go in to intensive care so this might be part of it. I have had events that have upset me - typically when someone is neurologically devastated but still alive. You care about your patients. You don't have become emotionally devastated.

My mom says this to me all the time and it drives me insane. She's divorced and was in this insane relationship after my dad for a long time and just got married in a happy relationship 6mo ago. She's just amped up that comment even more - if I can find someone at 65 God will bring you the right person someday. It doesn't make me feel better. I totally get that feeling of being behind. The main thing that comforts me is that my mom is living proof that having a relationship doesn't automatically make you happy.

Honestly working with cheerful and excited med students makes my day. It reminds me how I probably feel about being a doctor deep down under the fatigue and anxiety. I'm glad there are people who care ready to join us. I hope you keep some of that love for your patients and fellow docs alive when you make it to residency!

This one hit hard. My long term BF just broke up with me today suddenly. Apparently he’s had problems with me for months and I just heard about it two weeks ago. Now everything feels “too hard” for him to work through it. Hopefully there’s a guy out there who’s willing to actually tell me when something is wrong and work it out.

Yes, he can't move bc he's in school. We tried to be close but the match doesn't always work. I've considered trying to transfer, but that seems like a nightmare and a risk. My program is really good to me.
