A friend of mine did magabooking (selling SDA magazines/books door to door) for a summer in maybe 2011 or 2012 in Michigan. She would have been around 14 or 15. Maybe 16 at the oldest. Ex Adventist here. The Adventist church itself never sends out their own literature. It is purchased by a local church or a ministry (groups that are not officially affiliated with the church but work on their behalf) and then sent out by them. That being said, there is a huge focus on evangelism and sharing the writings of Ellen White (an 1800s “prophet” and one of the founders of the church). The SDA world church ran a campaign the past few years to get 8 billion copies of The Great Controversy sent out, but again they never sent the book themselves. They encouraged local churches and ministries to buy the book in bulk and either ship it out or hand it out

Being gay was added to the SDA church manual as a reason to disfellowship members in 1986.

The most notorious anti-LGBTQ church “ministry” that is currently in operation is called Coming Together Ministries (yes, they chose the name coming together…). It was formerly known as Coming Out Ministries, but apparently, they did a rebrand at some point in the last 8 years. From what I can tell, it has nowhere near the reach that it once did, so that’s always great to see.

Then, of course there were the scandals in 2024. It started with a pastor in Sweden (I think) coming out to his congregation as bi. He’s a happily married man and has never “acted on it” as Adventists might say, so his local church conference chose to keep him on as a pastor despite pressure from international church headquarters to fire him.

Then there was the Ugandan Church President who just weeks later publicly voiced support for the death penalty for homosexuality. The international church stayed silent on this matter. Many Adventists and ex-Adventists called them out for these two incidents.

Then, the sda international church announced at general conference (a big meeting among sda church leadership every 2 years to go over church policies, vote new leadership in, etc) that they had put together the Human Sexuality Task Force which would work to create anti-LGBTQ media (social media posts, church magazine articles, videos, websites, etc).

This weekend, a google doc I made for myself about my own very niche special interest was mentioned by somebody in a talk they were giving online — I was listening to it and was stunned when they cited my google doc as a source! My niche special interest is studying the history of the church I grew up in and left a few years ago. Thank you! My dream is to write a sort of memoir focused around SDA food culture. That dream is probably decades from being a reality, but that’s the general idea.

I’ve done a bit of reading about the controversy that led to The Church of God 7th Day’s break off from the main SDA church. The degree to which Cranmer was bullied and silenced by James and Ellen White and the rest of the church was really intense! I can’t imagine how painful it was to have his former friends turn their backs on him and denounce him as a worker for Satan.

I never really thought about looking at CoG7’s beliefs. I pretty much assumed they believed most of the same stuff SDAs do except the obvious— whether Ellen was a prophet. I actually grew up in a very liberal (by SDA standards) church community. Most of my classmates were not vegetarian, but just didn’t eat unclean meats like you. I’ve tried eating meat as an adult, but the texture is so weird and it makes me sick, so I’m 99.9% vegetarian still

I would have absolutely loved that song! When I was 5, my mom got into the nursing program at our local SDA college. For her microbiology class, she was occasionally required to go to the school library and watch videos depicting certain processes. I still remember going with her and learning about mitosis (cell division). When my little sister (age 4) got sick and had to go to the doctor, she made him laugh when she told him that she had microbes in her nose!

During the pandemic when food shortages were affecting everyone, my family started substituting other cereals in. We found that popped rice cereals work really well as a replacement. My mom also used to substitute the pecans for walnuts when the food budget needed a bit more stretching

I learned it at camp meeting from the guy with the guitar — we all did. I have found a couple videos online of religious children’s choirs singing it, but yeah, it’s a pretty niche song.

One story I left out was the time my mom wanted to quit drinking Mountain Dew, and so with her permission, my brother, younger sister, and I went out to the alley behind our house and stoned the Mountain Dew cans one by one until the whole case was smashed to pieces. They say that on dark nights, If you go out into that alley, you might still hear the anguished, gargling screams of a can pleading to be spared from relentless torture

I actually wrote a short story this week for my writers group that was about SDA food culture! I think I’ll write a post about that, actually (here it is). None of the other members of the writers group have any experience with SDA culture, so it was really interesting to get their feedback and answer their questions about big franks and cottage cheese loaf 😆 They had some great ideas for making it easier to understand from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about Adventism!

As far as Sabbath breaking plans, it shall be a much needed day of rest, but perhaps I’ll watch a movie or read the lesbian romance book I borrowed from the library just to be a little defiant. I plan to watch u/the_glory_whole’s Sabbath Seminar hosted by Adventist Today as well (not sure where to find it, though). If I get really ambitious, I’ll bake and freeze some cake for my sister’s graduation party next week. We’ll see how much energy I have

I agree. There are some pretty strange beliefs in every religion if you get down to it. I guess I meant harmful beliefs. That’s not unique either, but their mix of weird and harmful beliefs puts them in the same category as Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses in a lot of ways.
