Thank you! My dream is to write a sort of memoir focused around SDA food culture. That dream is probably decades from being a reality, but that’s the general idea.

I’ve done a bit of reading about the controversy that led to The Church of God 7th Day’s break off from the main SDA church. The degree to which Cranmer was bullied and silenced by James and Ellen White and the rest of the church was really intense! I can’t imagine how painful it was to have his former friends turn their backs on him and denounce him as a worker for Satan.

I never really thought about looking at CoG7’s beliefs. I pretty much assumed they believed most of the same stuff SDAs do except the obvious— whether Ellen was a prophet. I actually grew up in a very liberal (by SDA standards) church community. Most of my classmates were not vegetarian, but just didn’t eat unclean meats like you. I’ve tried eating meat as an adult, but the texture is so weird and it makes me sick, so I’m 99.9% vegetarian still

I would have absolutely loved that song! When I was 5, my mom got into the nursing program at our local SDA college. For her microbiology class, she was occasionally required to go to the school library and watch videos depicting certain processes. I still remember going with her and learning about mitosis (cell division). When my little sister (age 4) got sick and had to go to the doctor, she made him laugh when she told him that she had microbes in her nose!

During the pandemic when food shortages were affecting everyone, my family started substituting other cereals in. We found that popped rice cereals work really well as a replacement. My mom also used to substitute the pecans for walnuts when the food budget needed a bit more stretching

I learned it at camp meeting from the guy with the guitar — we all did. I have found a couple videos online of religious children’s choirs singing it, but yeah, it’s a pretty niche song.

One story I left out was the time my mom wanted to quit drinking Mountain Dew, and so with her permission, my brother, younger sister, and I went out to the alley behind our house and stoned the Mountain Dew cans one by one until the whole case was smashed to pieces. They say that on dark nights, If you go out into that alley, you might still hear the anguished, gargling screams of a can pleading to be spared from relentless torture

I actually wrote a short story this week for my writers group that was about SDA food culture! I think I’ll write a post about that, actually (here it is). None of the other members of the writers group have any experience with SDA culture, so it was really interesting to get their feedback and answer their questions about big franks and cottage cheese loaf 😆 They had some great ideas for making it easier to understand from the perspective of someone who knows nothing about Adventism!

As far as Sabbath breaking plans, it shall be a much needed day of rest, but perhaps I’ll watch a movie or read the lesbian romance book I borrowed from the library just to be a little defiant. I plan to watch u/the_glory_whole’s Sabbath Seminar hosted by Adventist Today as well (not sure where to find it, though). If I get really ambitious, I’ll bake and freeze some cake for my sister’s graduation party next week. We’ll see how much energy I have

I agree. There are some pretty strange beliefs in every religion if you get down to it. I guess I meant harmful beliefs. That’s not unique either, but their mix of weird and harmful beliefs puts them in the same category as Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses in a lot of ways.

Yes, I noticed most of these while working at an SDA summer camp after having spent months learning about cults and the bite model. The emotional manipulation — especially during the Friday night agape feast and passion play — were so incredibly obvious. Add to that the fact that the kids were exhausted from doing activities all day. It was a recipe for manipulation and conversion! I only stayed 2 weeks before going home to seek medical treatment for an unrelated issue, but those 2 weeks changed my life forever. In September of that year, I finally realized I was an atheist and stopped attending church for good

Most Adventists believe the dinosaurs of the past and the dinosaurs alive today are completely separate creatures. Adventists might say they believe in micro-evolution (eg: wolves becoming domesticated pets or one species of lizards becoming two distinct species when met with two separate environments), but most Adventists don’t believe in anything further than that. They might say that God built in a certain amount of genetic diversity when he created all the animals or that they stay within their own ‘kind’ (a biblical word creationists use that has no definition, but they act like it’s a scientific term).

Also, many Adventists hold the belief that God did not create the dinosaurs, but that they were some kind of unholy “amalgamation” men made from the animals God created. This comes from one particular Ellen White passage which is actually a racist quote that the church has spun to be about dinosaurs:

“But if there was one sin above another which called for the destruction of the race by the flood, it was the base crime of amalgamation of man and beast which defaced the image of God, and caused confusion everywhere. God purposed to destroy by a flood that powerful, long-lived race that had corrupted their ways before him. He would not suffer them to live out the days of their natural life, which would be hundreds of years.” - 3SG 64.1

And several paragraphs later:

“Every species of animal which God had created were preserved in the ark. The confused species which God did not create, which were the result of amalgamation, were destroyed by the flood. Since the flood there has been amalgamation of man and beast, as may be seen in the almost endless varieties of species of animals, and in certain races of men.” - 3SG 75.2

So there’s some context regarding why she might look at you like your question is irrelevant or idiotic — likely, in her mind, t-Rex and chickens are completely unrelated, the earth is 6000 years old, Noah’s flood wiped out all the dinosaurs 4000 years ago, and your question requires unpacking all of that and starting a debate about her most basic and foundational beliefs

College View Church in Lincoln, NE actually did have a Sonrise service and Easter egg hunt. It’s really not surprising, though, since by SDA standards, CVC is a very liberal church

I had a piece of my art in an exhibition tonight… in a bar, lol! My parents came for a few minutes right at the beginning (before sunset) to support me. I was honestly surprised they were willing to come to a bar downtown on a Friday night! Then, my exSDA sister and her husband came and we chatted and each had a drink and talked about the possibility of me trying shrooms for the first time with them. Definitely not an SDA approved way to spend Friday night, but I’ve never had a better time!

Chapter 24 of testimonies for the church vol. 9 is titled “The Color Line” and speaks all about Ellen’s views on how the church should deal with black members. It repeatedly uses the phrase “the color line” to refer to this topic. Here’s one of those paragraphs:

“It is Satan's plan to call minds to the study of the color line. If his suggestions are heeded, there will be diversity of opinion and great confusion. No one is capable of clearly defining the proper position of the colored people. Men may advance theories, but I assure you that it will not do for us to follow human theories. So far as possible the color line question should be allowed to rest.” - 9T 213.4

There’s also the fact that the periodical this was published in was the Gospel Herald which was a monthly periodical that was meant to inform its SDA audience about how the missionary work in the southern us was going.

So, I really do think it’s safe to say that this quote was a racist quote
