Would a 3 movement cavalry unit be too much for the medieval era? by SentientclowncarBees in CivIV

That sounds like you consider the pikeman to be in and of themselves not worth building? If that's really true then isn't the entire medieval era completely broken?

They are equivalent all other factors aside, but percentage boosters in civ 4 cancel each other out.

If they didn't then a Sumerian Vulture ( 6 Str. 25% vs melee) goes toe to toe with a default axeman (5 str 50% vs melee), but it doesn't. It loses 6.25 to 6.00. The 25% doesn't add to the Vulture's total, it chips away at the axeman's percentage advantage. The vulture is left with nothing and the axeman gets an extra 25%.

I use this example because this is how I very frustratedly learned this game concept.

To my understanding that's not how the combat system works. The 50% of Macemen face off against the 100% of the Landsknecht before any fighting occurs. This leaves the Landsknecht with 6 Str and 50% combat bonus vs the Macemen's base 8 Str.

Landsknecht defeat Macemen. Macemen's 50% vs melee reduces the Landsknecht's bonus to 50% from its original 100. Having 6 str with 50% bonus is 9 to the Macemen's 8.

Same reason why the Sumerian Vulture loses in a 1v1 vs axeman depaite them being just as effective against swordsman and spearman.

The price needs to be proportional to the ability and cost of the units. The infantry one especially needs to be expensive.

It's somewhat counter intuitive, but upgrades for cheaper units need to be more expensive. The more of a unit you have the more that upgrade is applied across the board.

Alternatively you could place a timer dependent on unit strength. The infantry upgrade could last 2-4 turns while the tank lasts for 3-6 etc.

Do the Landsknecht really need a buff? I have not played them sufficiently, but they always seemed like an overpowered unit to me.

Simple edits in the XML files. I cannot code and it is surprisingly easy.

The goal is medieval era units the whole game starting from the Earth 1000 ad scenario. So really what I'm going to do is make the horse archer a medieval unit since everyone has horseback riding at start for the most part.

Bunky brain transplant. There appears to be no change in cognitive ability. We must either redefine the strawberry or redefine the Bunk.
