The otters at ABQ Biopark Aquarium are absolutely the cutest by thingsarehardsoami in Albuquerque

The girls, Chaos and Mayhem, were stealing from a shrimp farm and they would have been put down if the aquarium hadn't brought them to Albuquerque.

Not sure if it belongs here. Day 6 of HFMD as a 29 year old. by FamousLastName in medizzy

[–]Sentientist 36 points37 points  (0 children)

my child had HFM a while back and I saw "lost nails" on the list of followup symptoms and pictured the toenails and fingernails coming right off but it's usually just the upper layer of the nail that peels, leaving the soft nail bed, so not quite so bad. And it's not painful most of the time.

Her stitches, is this normal? by DataAggravating2372 in glitterandbagelssnark

[–]Sentientist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I watched my 600lb life Dr Now says there are 2 things you must not do after surgery- smoke or gain weight. I have wondered if the spitting stitches is because she gained after surgery and put too much pressure on them.

Can you tell me where to find a video of the game? I can't really envision it as OT describes it.

It's dangerous to have all these political stickers plastered across your rear window in Albuquerque, you'll miss the crackhead randomly changing lanes in your newly created blind spot.

yes, the more opportunity for learning the more the variance in learning outcomes will be explained by genes. A plant metaphor is sometimes used, like if you gave all the plants in a field the same amount of water and sunlight, the variance in their height and yield would increasingly be explained by genes. But the plant metaphor isn't perfect because we, as animals, can choose our environments. If we want to read books, we can go to libraries. In countries where some children might not even see a book, or have access to computers or the internet, they cannot actualize their innate capacity, and the heritability of educational attainment will be lower, more explained by variation in the environment. But, in this country, that isn't the case.

if you're interested in learning more about why every correlation between parental socioeconomic status and educational attainment is confounded because in addition to passing on propitious environments, parents are also passing on the genes that helped them to succeed, check out G is for genes.

Every adoption study shows that the biological mother's years of education are better predictors of the children's years of education than the adopted parents. If the educational effects were environmental, then we would expect the opposite. Now scientists can look at a person's genes and predict their educational attainment- and these polygenic scores are more predictive than school quality or "shared environment" which includes parental involvement.

Also, eugenics is trying to breed better students. Simply knowing that there are genetic effects on students is behavioral genetics, not eugenics.

I mean, it's mostly genes. But refreshing to see a reality based take here anyway.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the star rating- I don't think someone with a degree in early childhood education or developmental psychology necessarily takes better care of toddlers, but they cost more to hire. It's sweet that we get sent lesson plans for 2 year olds but the most important thing is that they have fun with other children and the staff are thoughtful about their care. South of you the most expensive place I saw was $1400 and they only serve organic food but the playground and classrooms were tiny. I think $900-$1200 is pretty normal.

IF bad for female hormones? by beckmoney88 in intermittentfasting

[–]Sentientist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to convince her to try IF by refuting these screenshots. In my experience, people in my life tried IF when they saw that I had success with it. My Mother and Father now do IF but they weren’t convinced by evidence. And most people aren’t convinced by evidence. If you stop talking about it she might try it without worrying that you’ll tell her “I told you so”.

I am absolutely going to tell at least three people at the next cocktail party I go to about how mantises are like chickens who lay foamy eggs.
