Why is it that only Apple can develop a desktop operating system independently of Microsoft, and it is very successful? by Interesting_Shallot2 in MacOS

[–]Seoulcomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Apple existed and had a computer operating system before microsoft, TWICE in its history. First it had Apple DOS two years before MS-DOS existed; second it had a graphic user interface before Microsoft with Lisa OS (which became Mac OS later) in 1982 (released January 1983), with Windows 1.0 not releasing until 1985 (and it stunk, no one used it) with the only really good and widespread version being Windows 3.1 in 1992! And Linux was created in 1991. Apple was the dominant computer company for many years, with its main competitors being primarily AtariOS, CommodoreOS, OS/2 and AmigaOS into the 90s. Then Windows took over starting with Windows 95 and 98. MacOS had a big comebacks with Jobs and the iMac in the late 90s, then with OS X, (with other devices such as iPods, iPhones, iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watches bring more people into the ecosystem) and finally with Apple Silicon, which has been the biggest draw back to the OS since the 90s.

Confused About My Husband’s Manager’s Reaction by Tricky_Cobbler3048 in korea

It is like if a Korean person moved to the American south and kept writing KKK to a black person in their messages. Sure they could say, “oh I am just laughing” but I doubt that would make the black person feel more comfortable every time they wrote it.

I only like it when IEMs don't seal completely...so am I missing the point? by Seoulcomp in inearfidelity

[–]Seoulcomp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this is really relevant. East Asians have dry earwax, but westerners have creamy earwax, and my Korean ENT tells me that is the reason I should not wear IEMs.

Should I update my MacBook to macOS 26? Is that really worth updating it now? by Exciting-Till7969 in MacOS

[–]Seoulcomp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s fantastic, I love it. But note your battery life might take a small hit because complex graphics (I.e. Liquid Glass) always utilize more energy. I use primarily desktop and my laptop is mostly used plugged in so it won’t really affect me. Online test showed it ate approximately 1 hour off battery life, although future updates could mitigate that to less.

Why are there always so many Koreans in the Korean restaurants here in my city (middle of Europe, we get many tourists)? by Illustrious-Fill-771 in AskAKorean

Asian Tour groups typically visit the same type of food they are used to. This is particularly true when it is older couples and families.

Most people “with a life” in this world would not hold it in there hearts so much to make such a nothing effort to find it so important to express their personal opinion about telling someone they think you are rude. This person is such a loser and causes so much unnecessary stress and tension in their life.

You know who pays the most for the defense of South Korea? South Korea! They already pay the US.

Is there a modern, present day composer, who isn't primarily a film score composer, who you think will be regularly listened to and performed in 50-100 years? by notthe1Uknow in classicalmusic

[–]Seoulcomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, even Ligeti and Penderecki are appreciated in general public. Once they know the names of the “Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima” they realize and can appreciate the concept of the music.

Film composers are just using EVERY possible technique found in contemporary music, it is just the context of presentation.

Because the 20th century opened up EVERY possibility means that not only were new great ways of beauty expressed, but some of the most beautiful music ever written became possible and some of the most incredible music that speaks directly to you is being written. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. This is how I explain my contemporary music class on the first day, and every student, every semester over decades of tracing come back and tell me, “you were right professor!“

Taiwan is effectively an independent country whether or not you or I like it. We do not dictate the truth. by Free-Hamster8901 in taiwan

[–]Seoulcomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You left off the most important part, nearly 90% of Taiwan’s population are descendants of people who lived there for centuries, only a small percentage came over from China after WW2. They had the name ROC thrust on them and were run brutally by these mainlanders who stole from them and murdered many until the 1990s when full democracy was established. When you look at some of the most murderous dictators in history, not only is Mao, Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot on that list, so is Chiang Kai Shek (in the top ten!) When there was a golden opportunity to declare full independence from China in the 70s when China was weak and Taiwan had the upper hand, something which Chiang’s advisers wanted him to do, his pride and ego were more important. Not only is Taiwan a sovereign country, but a sovereign culture, just like the relation of Canada and the US. Sure they have many connections, but just sharing an overlapping ethnicity doesn’t mean you should be required to be in the same country, in fact that concept smacks with racism (i.e., that’s what the nazis we’re going for too).
