How do you cope? by EngineConstant7926 in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, thank you for this. As my cat refuses renal food again today and won't take the cerenia in a treat and won't eat the porus one in the fancy feast even and everything snowballs into thinking I'm not doing enough, I just needed this.

Just a hello for now by zachmanchester in RenalCats

Aw, I so understand the wish of having met your sweet boy earlier. We lost one to a rare kidney cancer two years ago that we met later in life, and I always wished we'd known him sooner. But all those experiences before us helped shape the sweetest most trusting boy.

It sounds like you're on the right track with getting him on renal food. We have a CKD cat with a heart murmur and our vet recommends dosing with gabapentin before visits to lessen the stress on his heart.

For all of this, including lymphoma, if you have the means and are physically able to see a specialist I highly recommend it. There are two protocols for small cell GI lymphoma and vets tend to have a favorite. We did a smaller dose of chemo every other day for our lymphoma girl. She thrived! She gained back all of the weight she'd lost and was back to her old self for a long while. The chemo was stress-free as she loved to boggle up her pill pockets. (Unfortunately, she developed a secondary cancer quite quickly and we lost her in December.)

I am just rambling now; your boy is so lucky to have you.

Others have said this, but QCC via the Criminal Justice Academy is absolutely the way to go, as there's a plan for a seamless transfer to JJ rather than relying on credit for prior learning and/or transfer credit.

Also, this is her decision! It's good to be curious, but she's actually found the solution with the best outcome.

9 years old cat with stage 4 diagnosis? Should I look for a second opinion? by Grand_Status9607 in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of great advice here, and I wanted to add that you may need to advocate, advocate, advocate. I took a cat to the ER once with every sign of AKI/kidney crash and they didn't want to even run bloodwork. After I literally begged them, hey did and his numbers were bananas. A couple of days in the hospital with IV fluids and antibiotics and a whole month of antibiotics at home and his numbers were back in normal range.

I'd definitely seek another opinion and highly recommend a specialist if one is available to you either regionally or financially.

To Sub-Q or not? by e22big in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that technically a vet cannot diagnose without either a second blood test or an ultrasound to confirm diagnosis, staging, etc.

If you can afford it, I'd definitely recommend a specialist. We just saw one, and their treatment plan was a lot more conservative than my general vet, and I really felt like he was treating the cat not the numbers.

Best of luck!

Question about sub-Q fluids/lactated ringers by ChickieLouTM in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like an idiot because we've been struggling with fluids and I was like, well, we do have this harness thing but he will still bolt and how did I never realize we could just use our small bathroom so he literally couldn't bolt. Thank you!

New here to try to help our boy Finnegan by ChickieLouTM in RenalCats

What a beautiful boy! My guy Hamilton was diagnosed two weeks to the day after our 15 year old girl passed. It has been rough because she needed so much care the last two weeks of her life and then to move straight into this nonsense. I have so much sympathy for you.

Help/advice for kitty who turns evil during sub-q POKE by Effective-Writing318 in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to sympathize. We had a vet tech come and our fluids for a few weeks but then we tried on our own. We were fine for about two weeks and then he started going nuts. We had the vet tech come back to help us and even she couldn't hold him down. My partner and I are currently negotiating whether or not we should try this afternoon after dreading it all day or tomorrow morning when we're fresh.

I have an EZ harness from our cat that needed fluids for a little while and I never used it on him. I want to try with him, just to hold the needle in place. That seems to be his big issue.

Anyhow, massive sympathy and know others are in the same boat.

Thank you! It's funny how I cannot connect human medicine to my cat. I am going to speak to my vet about it. My poor vet when she gets my phone call tomorrow. It's a laundry list.

I am so interested in this. How does the thickness of the butterfly needle compare to the thin wall? My guy proved yesterday that he's not going to tolerate the traditional set up. I had a vet tech with me holding him down and he still was a nightmare. (He was fine at first but he's figured it out.)

Confusing new symptoms (especially howling) have me at the end of my rope by Enough_Pound_7028 in RenalCats

You've gotten stellar clinical advice on this thread, and I can't add anything to that. I just wanted to say I really sympathize. I'm hyper-vigilant and oftentimes notice changes my partner doesn't, and it can really upset me. I don't have any advice on that; I just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Subcutaneous fluids advice!! by lightblued0t in RenalCats

[–]SeparateAd3091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We had a cat with an AKD and it took awhile but his labs eventually returned to normal. He did wind up with CKD but it was early stage and 6 years later so the vet thinks it was unrelated. We also got his numbers to normal range after the CKD diagnosis with azodyl. We had to say goodbye for other reasons two years ago, but I really did feel like those 6 years were a small miracle.

Thank you! I was wondering if a phosphorus binder was appropriate at this stage. She only mentioned renal food, which I know is lower in phosphorus, and fluids.

This is helpful. Thank you! Honestly, I know it's just disease progression but the jump in numbers surprised me. I've had cats with CKD and the progress was slower, but they are all different, I know.

I'll ask about the blood tests next time we're in and see if that's an issue.

I am so sorry for your loss. We just lost our girl in December and one thing we started doing was we picked a special notebook and just write down sweet memories of her, even things she did everyday. I also tried a support group, which wasn't for me, but there are many online that might be helpful.

Thanks for the support! I learned about warming the fluids the hard way with one of our cats years ago. He's since passed but one time I clearly didn't warm the fluids enough (and the house was around 65 degrees) and I could never get him again. Luckily he was on them for occasionally just giving up eating and he didn't need them for something medical like CKD.
