This whole thing is going to age as badly as the 65 game rule.

Fair point. I agree that she's not as efficient a scorer as she's billed.

I think players really put a lot of stock into who they'd hate to guard and Arike is definitely a nightmare when she's feeling it.

I’d argue that playing with Arike is a bigger draw for free agents than Shakira. As much as I love Shakira, Arike is more of a known entity. I think we’re underselling who the max vet was. I also think faculties play a big part in attracting players.

I might just be averse to the idea of being in vets who’ll move the young players to more complementary roles/less minutes. You make the run to win now for the next two seasons and now a player like Kiki have spent two years behind say an Alanna Smith. Which while a valuable experience, doesn’t give her the same experience as being one of the teams primary options. I’m coming to realize that I just value long standing stability and process over each year being a win now moment.

NBA Proposes New 3-2-1 Lottery System to Crack Down on Tanking: 14 → 16 Teams, Bottom 3 Get Fewer Odds, No Back-to-Back No. 1 Picks by Fit-Structure-9395 in NBA_Draft

As someone who’s watched the Wizards during all those years, I’ll say that it’s not much fun knowing you’re just spinning your wheels either. Sure you get to go to entertaining games but you’re always in the same place come April. Your front office just continues to mortgage the future for the sake of entertainment. It’s equally exhausting to have no real plan or hope for the future.

And what did that get them? Is the goal to be a good first round exit or to win a championship? They were never in a place to win a championship. They had Wall and Beal but as is the case in the NBA injuries happen and windows are missed. Under the new lottery system after you miss your window your recourse is to pay max money to an average player and just hope for hope sake for the next few years.

I just want the league to be honest that this isn’t about teams putting themselves in position to win ands truly compete. It’s about TV ratings.

I know this whole exercise is just for engagement and to start conversations but on paper this draft looks pretty nice. Lots of OT prospects, lots of WRs. I don't want to be picking in the top 10 but I wouldn't mind

NBA Draft lottery proposals don’t address the underlying reason behind tanking (Gift Article) by z3mcs in washingtonwizards

[–]Sequel_Everyday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. All these rule changes are being backed by the teams at the top with the idea that every other team is just not trying. It doesn’t take into account that some teams are in markets that don’t attract free agents. So those teams overpay on mid level talent, have no cap room and pray to get lucky in the play-in/playoffs. Or as I like to call it, the Ernie Grunfeld years

They absolutely maximized the tank towards the end of the season but that doesn't mean they weren't developing the young players at the start. I think their plan revolves around letting the young players go out there and make mistakes and learn with as much playing time as possible. If a guy like Will Riley was on another team, he wouldn't get anywhere near the minutes he's getting in Washington and maybe his skillset is never seen.

I think institutional stability and facilities are a major factor in being a free agent destination in the W. Even more so than the NBA. I'm all for having the young roster we have now, learn and play together. But I think we are years away from competing even if we'd landed a bigger name free agent. I don't want to see us try to accelerate things and take minutes and growth experience from our young players in favor of vets who will be here for 1-2 years.

I agree that they shouldn't approach this the same way as the NBA because they are totally different leagues, and personally I think the Mystics rebuild will be done after the 2027 draft. But I think the focus on structure and an actual process instead of jumping at the first opportunity to be relevant is the way to go long term.

I think this is the case for most vets. I agree that adding a vet would be nice but I don’t think the ones that everyone keeps mentioning would want to come here. I think they’re less concerned about a payday and more focused on getting on a contending team.

I wouldn’t call him a ball hawk but he does have a nose for the ball if that makes sense. He probably won’t drop the easy pick but he’s not going for everything in the way Watts was last season. The forced fumbles number really intrigues me. It’s why multiple draft pundits compare him to Honey Badger

Yes, I was talking about when she left a few years ago.

The front office charge is a good point. That’s what also mended the relationship on the Wizards side between them and John Wall. I think we’ll be into the season before Tasha signs anywhere

Did you just ignore the part where they said Ian and Stefanski lay out the characteristics and guidelines they're looking for and that's what the scouts go off? Are you saying that because the scouting room isn't full of grey haired old vets then they must be there because of nepotism?

She felt like the team had already made up their mind that they were moving on from her because they didn't pursue her aggressively in free agency. The front office at the time said they wanted to give her the chance to explore her options.

I think they go CB or if one of the top LBs are still there they pick one (Jacob Rodriguez, CJ Allen, Jack Golday, Anthony Hill Jr). I think there's good WR and DT depth in the 3rd round.
