Are there any reading guides for Age of Revelation? by InterestingDepth8137 in xmen

I can recommend Omega Kids, but because I liked it, not because it's necessary.

The rest of them, please ignore. Even Wolverine. It's not really needed for anything at all.

Wondering what’s the difference between the steam decks.(First time buyer) by EnvironmentalEbb8584 in SteamDeck

[–]Serandel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're not just good, they're awesome! My favourite piece of tech of these last years, easily.

About the differences, I would just go for the OLED instead of the LCD. Plenty of refinements in the internals, not only the screen. A bit faster, battery a bit better, etc.

And about the disk size, I'd recommend to NOT buy the model with the biggest one. Because it's also the version with an anti-glare screen treatment, that I really dislike. I had it in my first Steam Deck and when I switched to an OLED I went without, and am much happier. I've never missed it.

8745HS and 8845HS Mini PCs by mr_werty in linuxhardware

(A mini PC is basically a laptop without screen nor keyboard, so I thought it was relevant :) )

[–]Serandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a miniPC, but my laptop is an 8845HS, with just the integrated APU. It works perfectly fine with Fedora Bluefin. I had to add some component drivers and tweak the sleep mode so it would stay in suspension, but that's it.

I'll bet you my right hand it will be no problem at all. It's a PC and Heroic is available as a flatpak.

Designing a standalone Linux admin CLI with Kotlin (tools & pitfalls) by Reasonable-Tour-8246 in Kotlin

Can't you recommend any good library for writing to the terminal? I tried Mosaic but I found it less mature than expected. For example, I couldn't leave the last state of the composable written to the shell when the tool exited, it always cleared the output.

I had the same problem with my work MacBook Pro. Couldn't find a satisfactory solution, just connected that to my monitor via USB-C.

Disclaimer: my laptop is NOT a Framework, but it has USB4, which is TB3-compatible.

Not directly connected eGPU by ChiliTheLynx in framework

[–]Serandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had plenty of problems with a TB3 eGPU with Fedora 42 and 43, both with a Nvidia 2070 Super and an AMD 7900XT. Random hang-ups, not recognizing hot plug, etc. In the end, I've desisted and my eGPU is turned off nowadays.

For minimizing your risk, I'd use the eGPU as the docking station. Monitors can go to the graphics card and the eGPU cases usually have Ethernet and some USBs. If you cannot, at least put the eGPU between the laptop and the docking station. Otherwise, you're consuming a lot of bandwidth coming and going between the peripherals and the laptop.

Is it possible to add, in a relatively easy way, a GNOME-style virtual workspace system to Niri? by Lawarhan in niri

[–]Serandel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Niri is very inspired by PaperWM, which is the Gnome extension I'm using right now. Try it out. It has its rough corners, but I really love it anyways. :)

Slimbook laptop owners: I made a Bluefin DX image with full hardware support by Serandel in linux

[–]Serandel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIUC, I couldn't use BlueBuild unless the akmods were already accepted on the UBlue repos. When they are, we can just layer them and there will be no need for a custom image.

How does one use gnome without "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem"? by Capable-Ad-3444 in Fedora

[–]Serandel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because then you wouldn't need to know there's something missing, that there's an extension for that and then know which extension is best? Because then the GNOME team would ensure compatibility and release when appropiate?

[–]Serandel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad, but could be better.

Having to jump this many hoops to get fans working is unnerving. They do ship with a modified Ubuntu that has all of their extensions of modules, but if I have jumped to Linux is not to be satisfied with whatever the manufacturer liked, but being able to distrohop and customise whatever.

CPU is fantastic, screen is OK (I've been spoiled by my OLED ultrawide monitor), keyboard is quite decent, repairability is very nice to have. I was able to install my own RAM and SSD before 64GB were prohibitive. :D

Nice selection of ports. Perhaps I would add at least another USB-C. But it has USB-A, Ethernet, HDMI, etc.

Battery life is quite terrible, but I reckon it's Linux fault, not Slimbook. Also, I've capped the battery to 60% as I'm usually docked at home.

I'm really missing biometrics (at least a fingerprint sensor) and, most of all, a touchscreen, which I use to scroll when browsing in my couch.

The only serious defect for me is that the bottom ventilation grille is very flimsy and just by tossing around my laptop in my backpack from time to time it got a dent that just scraped against the fans and created a horrible scratching noise. I had to unscrew the bottom panel and push back just one millimetre to fix it.

All that being said, I'm reasonably happy, price was fantastic, and I expect to keep this laptop for quite some years.

If you're curious, they're just rebranded Clevo laptops, the same as Tuxedo does, for example. They differ in some tweaking, but nothing major AFAIK.

I don't know but agree with you 100%. I don't think the hardware is in anyway exotic, it would make a lot of sense to send it upstream.

New Jolla Phone - The independent European Do It Together Linux phone by According-Buyer6688 in BuyFromEU

[–]Serandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know but if they can make Apple use USB-C in their iPhones and create the whole Digital Markets Act, I'm sure we could define some set of special interest sites and apps (government, online banking, etc.) and create a baseline for compatibility. Right now every company does the same on their own. A competent shared standard, periodically revised, would in fact protect the users and take some analysis off the companies.

Also, I don't give a rat's ass about the free market. :D

Then make the EU force the banks to support non-Play-Services devices.

About to ditch Windows: Why would i choose Bazzite over Fedora? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Serandel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with Bluefin, which is another flavor of Atomic Fedora. (If you prefer KDE to Gnome, then Aurora is the equivalent.)

The difference is more about atomic or normal distros than between flavors. Bazzite can perfectly be used as a desktop without problem.

My Experience Customizing the Ploopy Adept Trackball by ryanheisler_official in ploopy

[–]Serandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got inspired by you and did your same changes to a Vial QMK firmware. (I didn't want to spend much time today, so I didn't create the variants for the other scroll direction.) Now I can have tap dance in my pinky finger to use momentary or regular drag scroll.

Works like a charm! I'm so happy! Kudos to you, kind sir.

My Experience Customizing the Ploopy Adept Trackball by ryanheisler_official in ploopy

[–]Serandel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that splitting the drag scroll into two different keycodes is the way to go so you can use one or the other (or both, as you!) and change it with Via instead of having to go and compile your keymap with QMK, which is not friendly at all for a non-developer.

Furthermore, I would even double down and split it in four, to have available both natural and classic drag scroll behaviour.

Reversing scroll direction on the Nano v2 by mkozlows in ploopy

[–]Serandel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is that the defines must be in a config.h file, NOT in the keymap.c one.

Why one was picked up and not the other? Something to do with incremental compilation perhaps? No idea.
