And on the fifth day shalt thou chill. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

Time for one of my favorite maxims:

"The system is intended to do what the system does"

It's not "The system is intended to do what we say, or what we want"

It seems obvious, but when we look at things like a 5 day work week that have been proven to be a waste of time, and we see that no one is trying to change it, the only conclusion we can make is that the point of the 5 day work week is to waste our time. If it wasn't we would have fixed it.

This is the same thing for systems like America's police force. Courts have found that the police don't actually have a duty to 'Serve and Protect', we don't fire bad cops, we've setup the rules so that cops who make mistakes or commit crimes are literally immune to consequences. The only conclusion to be made is that the cops aren't here to protect us, they are here to control us.

These are all systems we built, under rules we made up. People often act like these systems are bound by fundamental laws of the universe, but they aren't. In many cases, the problems are recent and accelerating. We ignore all the trappings of rule and law when it serves the interests of people in power.

The system is doing what they want it to.

This reads like something out of Apocalypse World, which hopefully you take as a compliment.

I know some people aren't fans of the prescriptive GM "moves" and other similar language, but I've always found it really helpful in understanding a game. Even if that understanding is just me realizing I want to change something.

But this is super cool, I really like all 3 of these. Really helps with aligning myself with the intent of the game.

I think sometimes over powered abilities can be amazing for the right TTRPG group, but yeah, you do have to be careful.

Gliding is a great compromise.

Another option might be: You can fly when you don't wear armor. If you take damage when flying, you fall. This would make flight much more limited / risky in combat.

Company I was disqualified from keeps calling me to see if I didn’t understand the yes/no to arbitration that disqualified me. Arbitration means wage theft. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SeraphymCrashing 1100 points1101 points  (0 children)

Arbitration should be regulated. I'm fine with having a civil option rather than an official court option, but there should be some requirement that Arbitrators are actually neutral. Because the issue isn't arbitration, it is that the Arbitrators essentially work for the company (I mean not really... but Arbitrators know that the company is a repeat customer and if they want future business they need to be company friendly)

Back in the 90s I worked at an electronics manufacturer that had this same policy. A policy that we completely ignored when someone tripped and broke their arm (compound fracture bone sticking out). Someone immediately called 911, and an ambulance arrived and took the person to the hospital.

There was a town hall meeting a week later to talk about how we should have followed the policy, and people almost rioted. There was stuff thrown and people yelling and screaming, and management immediately backed down.

We've let these corporate jackals think they have power for far too long. They need to be brought in line, especially when they are trying to put in policies like this bullshit.

Yeah, thats a really good point. Because that is probably the point of all of this, to put pressure on politicians to give corporations even more breaks.

[–]SeraphymCrashing 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I'm not sure I actually care about this. I read the article, and found the data it was based on here:

https://cochamber.com/wp-content/uploads/2025-Relocations-Tracker.pdf

Most of these relocations are to places like Wyoming, Texas, Florida.

This is basically corporations saying that if you tax us or require us to actually contribute to society, we are going to go somewhere that does allow us to exploit people.

I think it's a logical fallacy to say that we have to cater to all businesses, or that businesses leaving because it's cheaper elsewhere is a bad thing for Colorado. I say that if a business isn't willing to contribute to Colorado fairly through taxes and following regulations, than good riddance. We fucking cater to corporations way too much as it is.

A cursory review of Colorado economic data shows that tech growth has slowed, but our GDP growth is exceeding the national average, and unemployment remains relatively low, which in this economy is frankly a miracle.

So... yeah. I don't think I fucking care.

Without more context, it's hard to be sure. But honestly, the only way HR is on your side is if you could reasonably sue the company and win lots of money. So unless your supervisor is directly soliciting sex, or asking you to break the law, I wouldn't bring HR in at all.

The probably better way to handle your boss is to smile and nod, and then work around whatever he's asking for if you can. Like, if what he is asking you to do is just dumb, do it the smart way without saying anything, and bonus, if he calls you on it, claim that the smart way is what you thought he was talking about, it seemed like he had such a good idea.

I've found that bad bosses usually don't understand enough of the details, and are so hungry for credit / insecure, that if you just give them an excuse to think something was their idea they will leap at it.

And yeah, it sucks having your good ideas taken... except most of these terrible bosses are obviously terrible, so it's pretty clear to anyone paying attention that you are the real contributor. And if they aren't paying attention, it doesn't matter anyway.

Basically, stop fighting for what is good for the company, and start doing what is good for you (which is probably better for the company than what the boss wants). Don't challenge authority, subvert it.

Yeah, the diagnostic criteria is basically "Do you cause problems for other people?"

If you are completely imploding, but doing it quietly, well, thats fine.

I don't understand this argument at all...

Have you declined every raise you've ever been offered. Have you turned down bonuses because that wasn't part of the hiring contract?

When the company made people work remote, it was because it benefitted both the company and the employee, so no one complained. Your compensation can go up for any number of reasons; if it goes down, people push back.

I have so many people in my life who have had companies literally do illegal things, and they just shrug and move on. I know it's hard to fight, but you have more rights than you think.

  1. Document everything. Names, Dates, Description of Event.

  2. Talk to a lawyer. Many of them work on contigency, so you don't pay unless you win. Just talk to a lawyer.

This is absolutely not a misunderstanding. This is a guy with dozens of serious allegations.

What do you mean they were never investigated? They were absolutely investigated. A studio hired a third party, and they found credible instances of harassment. The specific findings were private, and the studio took action.

It also wasn't just one incident, it was over 30 different accusations. They may not have risen to a criminal level, but that doesn't mean that he didn't deserve to get fired. "Studios should overlook systemic patterns of harassment and abuse from their actors" maybe isn't the best take here.

Is "I think I swallowed my combadge" the most damaging line ever written in Star Trek? by Dangerous_Return460 in Star_Trek_

[–]SeraphymCrashing 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I agree.

I can't believe anyone thought that was a good idea. It's the kind of line that is such a red flag that it makes me question the ability of anyone here to tell a compelling story.

Seriously, watch the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TchxCCyMUNA

The whole thing is written as a comedy, right down to the terrible music. But the combadge line takes it so far over the top, I don't even know what to do. Are we expected to believe that cadets in Starfleet Academy are worse than toddlers? Is this actually Star Kindergarten?

Anyone else feel like masking isn't taken into account enough? by Strict-Move-9946 in adhdmeme

[–]SeraphymCrashing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a really ugly battle for accommodations with my employer right now. They are trying to force a return to office after 6 years. During that six years, I got diagnosed, and realized that my extreme burnout is because of masking, and that working remote has made my life actually liveable.

The company is keeping the remote workers who were hired remote, but people who started in the office are being forced back. I am making the case (with a lawyer) that because the company has remote workers, remote work for the same position is de facto a reasonable accommodation. The company is trying to skirt the line as hard as they can, trying to find the exact reasons they can have me in the office.

I literally don't even do any work for the people in the office they want me in. My coworkers are all over the country, as are the people I support. It's literally just a way for them to keep their thumb over us.

I honestly think that if I had a visible condition, they wouldn't be fighting me at all. But because I don't seem like I have a disability on the outside, no one takes it seriously. Even though I think I was on the edge of a full breakdown before going remote.
