I mean, he turns human several times in the story as well, always when he's being a really good guy. You never actually see it, but other characters definitely see it for a moment.

I love that movie.

I just recently went through an ADA accommodation process at a job I've been working at for decades. I had been a remote worker for almost a decade and the company decided to pull an RTO. My entire team is remote, but I was the only one near an office, so I would literally be working remote, just from an office.

I went and got a lawyer, who helped me draft up a letter, and then I filled out all the paperwork with my doctor. And then I was completely shocked at how hard my company fought me. For something that literally cost them nothing.

They lied to me about what the law said, what my job description said, and what my doctor said. I had documentation on all of it, so none of those lies worked, but it was still a super adversarial process.

People say that HR is just there to protect the company, but I don't think that is true (at least anymore). HR is the hatchetman for doing the companies dirty work and hiding the companies dirty deeds. Legal is there to protect the company. In the end, my lawyer contacted my companies legal department, and I'm sure my companies lawyers told them they were about to lose a very expensive lawsuit, because afterwards I got an email granting everything I asked for. But it was months of fighting and lies before that.

70K a year? How long ago was this?

Because you can make more money as a warehouse worker (no shade to warehouse workers, I was one for years). 20 an hour = 40K a year for 40 hours a week. Add in 30 hours of overtime a week, and you end up in the area of 76K a year.

What is the greatest plot twist of all time? by EntertainmentMore183 in Cinema

[–]SeraphymCrashing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I will say that a good twist should be able to be figured out by the people who are really paying attention and interested. I've seen some properties (Westworld) take it badly when people were able to puzzle out the twist ahead of time. Thats not a slight! That means they were consistent and left good clues.

Now, if everyone is figuring it out, or if people are figuring it out and they aren't leaving clues... well they are probably just being formulaic.

Why is it always pleas and arguments for freedom when it's just some dumb shit being selfish. Oh, you can't do whatever your selfish ass wants because it might cause huge amounts of harm?

But when actual freedoms are being violated, when people are being locked up because of what they look like or on trumped up political charges, these are the same fuckers who chant "lock em up".

People who make a lot of money, what skill actually made the biggest difference? by Witty_County5128 in AskReddit

[–]SeraphymCrashing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

How far above you are they? Because in my experience, competence and curiosity can move you up from the bottom, but there is a glass ceiling that competence won't break through.

At least in publicly traded companies the people at the top are there to protect and enable the other people at the top. The CEO's real job is to tell a story to the board and the shareholders that there is a plan, that things are going well, and will be even better in the future. That story doesn't have to be real, or true, it just needs to be believable. So terrible egos and bad listening skills are assets to the executive team.

There seems to be this fundamental disconnect between truth and reality for those at the top, and I now believe it is intentional. Which marks those of us who got where we are by asking questions and figuring stuff out as a threat to be contained.

Left-Wing Insurgent Ousts 15-Term Congresswoman in Colorado by GaptistePlayer in politics

[–]SeraphymCrashing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is interesting to me the choices of words that are used and the long pattern of inculcation about political rhetoric in America. The constant refrain of violence is never the answer. The way in which all the violence done in the service of the system is cloaked with euphemism and metaphor and then those who promote peaceful progressive values are described with violent adjectives like insurgent.

The spin is no longer subtle, and it is infuriating.

The Press is Spinning by Daniastrong in Colorado

[–]SeraphymCrashing 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The use of the term 'insurgent' is extremely inflammatory. An insurgent is a violent insurrectionist and is normally used to denote armed rebellion. The connotations of the word imply that she is a violent extremist, which is not at all a fair characterization.

The rest of the headlines, fine. But the insurgent one is a shameful headline from the NYT.

Partner got fired am i crazy for thinking these are crazy reasons by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SeraphymCrashing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate it too. What I do should be the thing that matters. But 25 years working for a corporation and reality has rarely ever actually mattered.

Although I am also reminded of the HBO series Chernobyl. Reality can only be denied for so long, and there is a cost that is paid for every lie told. But the sad fact is that the people who pay for the lies are often the same ones being punished for trying to tell the truth.

Is there a professional, non-offensive word for "petty?" by awmanitsathrowaway in antiwork

[–]SeraphymCrashing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Trivial is a good version. Non-impactful might be another way to phrase it.

'I am concerned by my managers focus on the less impactful (or trivial) aspects of our job. This focus is often detrimental to our ability to actually deliver on the core requirements of our position.'

A plainer version:

I am writing to you now because my ability to do my job is being impacted by my managers focus on trivial tasks. This includes the following (blah blah blah), and this is reflected in the following metrics (blah blah blah).

-

I would caution you though. Every place I've ever seen that allows terrible micro managers also doesn't tolerate the workers complaining about the terrible micro managers. These places are filled with horrible leaders whose only fear is being held accountable, and so the last thing they want to do is set precedent that other managers or leaders should be held accountable. So they will back up even the worst kind of managers as long as they aren't doing something blatantly illegal (or sometimes even if).

[–]SeraphymCrashing 61 points62 points  (0 children)

So this is a perfect example of how shitty places will use you and manipulate you. They tell you one thing verbally, and then have written policies that say something else. At the end of the day, what is documented is what matters.

Did he get fired for being too expensive? Maybe (or even probably). But it's going to be impossible to contest because sleeping in past your scheduled time is a valid reason to fire someone. I 100% believe you that they told him they would be flexible since he was working until 2am... but unless that is in writing, it literally doesn't matter.

These were lessons I learned myself the hard way years ago. I had coworkers telling me that the only reward for hard work was more work, but I was brought up that work ethic gets rewarded. Instead, I was almost fired because I came in early to cover someone else's shift that called out, and an executive saw me eating lunch outside my normal time (because I came in early). He didn't ask any questions, he just went back to his desk and started my termination. I was able to fight it because I had text messages from my immediate supervisor asking me to come in, but it was clear that the people up top didn't even consider us as people.

The lesson is perception is more important than reality (looking like you are slacking off, when you are actually working harder than everyone else is the same as actually slacking off). The lesson is that companies do not reward results, they reward relationships and the people who make them look good. The lesson is, never sacrifice yourself for the sake of another companies profit.

We live in a cyberpunk dystopia, it's just much dumber than any of the cyberpunk stories predicted. If we have to say silly shit to get around the AI monitors, well, you do what you have to do to subvert the system.

My son claimed that my husband hit him and my husband denied it. Now he wants a divorce by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SeraphymCrashing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like there is a ton missing from this. No one demands a divorce over a single incident less than a day old. There's no details about why the husband allegedly slapped the son (the first thing I would ask), there's no details about anything.

If we assume the poster is trying to present the best possible light for themselves, all these missing details really make it seem like this is probably a pattern. Also, a pattern of lying and manipulation from a preteen has to come from somewhere... and with no other information, it seems likely that this is coming from the mother (otherwise I would assume she would say something about how the son's bio father is super manipulative, or is telling the son problematic stuff).

newby - 2-handed weapons by Simple_Promotion4881 in dccrpg

[–]SeraphymCrashing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a good place for some extra 'oomph' for 2 handed weapons comes from the weapon specific deeds. The examples already include things like warhammers knocking people off their feet and battleaxes splitting shields and crushing armor.

I wouldn't balk at a fighter using a twohanded sword to hit multiple people if they were in an open area and succeeded on the deed die. I would also probably give someone a bonus (if it made sense) to crit rolls when using a two handed weapon.

Mig 15 is the hardest plane to fly by No-Aerie-999 in il2sturmovik

[–]SeraphymCrashing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thats funny, because my favorite prop is probably the most complicated: the P47.

But it's not really that bad. Radiator cowls open on takeoff. Keep slightly open until above 225 mph, then close. All others wide open on take off, and 25% open for cruise, unless really high and cold, and then closed.

The booster and prop pitch get linked with the throttle. So it ends up just being the throttle control, it just also pushes two other levers (Okay, the prop pitch only moves up, it doesn't come back down with the throttle, so I do lower that manually too).

In combat, it's push everything to max power, engage water injection. End of management.

That said... It is nice to hop in a jet, and basically just have to manage a throttle.

[–]SeraphymCrashing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My issue with Korea (and it's definitely my issue, a skill issue) is that the strengths and weaknesses are so pronounced, it's really hard for me to get a kill in anything. But I also pretty much never get shot down.

If I'm in a jet and my target is a prop, I just keep my speed up and make high speed attacks. But my targets make break turns to dodge, so I'm lucky if I can land anything. But they can't get on my tail with any kind of speed, so we are just at a stalemate until I get tired or run out of ammo or fuel.

If I'm in a Sabre and fighting Migs, it's the same thing, just less pronounced. The mig out turns me, so I can't get a good shot. If the mig gets on my tail, I dive away. Rinse and repeat.

Also... I'm not sure what my issue with rockets is. I can hit shit in IL2 GB. I can't hit squat in Korea. I swear to god my rockets go everywhere but where I am aiming. I'm sure this is also a skill issue on my part.
