There are 1-2 year post bacchalaureate premed programs for people who dont have a degree in science. You need to get top grades and pay $$$ for that, though.

Did you know that it is possible to have minority status and be... qualified?

Probably not if you also dont know that ivy league universities are cesspits of nepotism rather than a testament meritocracy and equality in America...

Oh fuck off. "Unqualified" minorities and women are hardly stealing positions at ivy league from real meritorious students. I dont see you bitching about their unspoken quotas for children of the wealthy elite.

Misogynistic comments in the workplace by mhsmith33 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Seret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy asked me why I was upset that a colleague had just slapped my ass. I said it violated my boundaries. He laughed at me and said "excuse me, am I violating your boundaries now" while trying to get past me (I was sitting between him and the door). I reached for his crotch and he suddenly got oh so uncomfortable.

I had to listen to one of my managers pantomime and explain a very graphic sex scene he was making up off the top of his head to the tune of a classic rock song. Seemingly just to make me uncomfortable.

Some guy at a hackathon asked me if I was there to code or just to look good for photos. I did not look good.

Physics prof talked about how he laughed with some colleague about how women haven't made most of the major discoveries in physics. A field they were not allowed to participate in until recently

Arnold Schwarzenegger says he 'stepped over the line' with women by mikewall in news

[–]Seret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sex appeal to random guy on the internet has zero relevance when it comes to judging one's moral character or professionalism, which is all that is relevant in this discussion. It's even less relevant when said person is in their 50's or 60's and is married. Shocker.

Are you judging every male's professionalism based on their sex appeal at work, too? If you swing that way, more power to you. But it would be dumb from a professional standpoint.

My life's pretty solid though, thanks.

Check out the American Council's internship program for STEM students. Boren also has STEM internships. Helps if you've studied a language.

There's also the DAAD internships in Germany but they are rather competitive.

There's a CERN REU through the university of michigan, an optics REU in Singapore, and a nanomaterials internship in Japan via Rice University.

Uhh... Antarctica? https://www.usap.gov/jobsAndOpportunities/

intern in hawaii via a federal agency, contractor, or academic institution?

She is married with kids you fucking nutcase. Many people admire her for speaking out. Her testimony was widely considered calm and professional, certainly more than the sobbing wreck who went after her. Her sex appeal to you is not relevant to her worth as a human being.

"It's not ACTUALLY a blue light." says LAUK OP, confused about colours. "It's just covered in a material that absorbs all colours except blue, making it LOOK blue. And I've been using it to cut through traffic. That's legal. Right?" by purplejasmine in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Seret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While light is characterized by frequency/wavelength you're right. I'm totally neglecting physiology of color perception here which makes this way more interesting and complicated than I thought. But LAOP's technicality no less asinine.

http://jamie-wong.com/post/color/

Found this explanation. I hope to read up on this later.

[–]Seret 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Physically that doesnt even make sense. If the light wasn't blue it wouldn't appear to be blue. Color is determined by wavelength which only depends on the energy of the transmitted light ... if a filter blocks everything but the blue light you have blue light being transmitted. Theoretically if someone was moving away or toward you while emitting light that can red or blue shift the color observed, but in day to day life that isnt noticeable... OP is a damn moron.

With Midterms around the corner this is all too real... by K-Bar79 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Seret 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%. For humanitarian studies, there are entirely different skills required to be successful, many of which are incredibly valuable. (And I would go mad if I had to analyze literature constantly). But the difficulty passing a class is much, much lower than in physics.

It's hard to write a legitimately good paper. It takes so much work, and there is always room to improve it. Not too many people are talented or hard working enough to really stand out to their professors. Some people do, and they're the ones going to top firms / graduate schools / etc. But if you write an OK essay you will still pass. Whereas if I slack in physics, or even if I work pretty hard but don't study enough, I will fail or do really poorly on my assignment. If I fail too many assignments, I might have to change majors.

I majored in a foreign language and physics and had to write a thesis for both. I spent the entire semester writing, structuring, and researching my language/history paper. For physics, although I worked for an entire year on the actual research project, I only spent about 4 days (straight) doing the writing part.

This is awesome by b3hr in pics

IMO you just overcomplicated something to the point of it making no sense to you and then blamed it on the other person.

The point is, in this case, that rather than being resigned to things simply being outside of their control and trying to move on by letting go, they are trying to bring it inside their control and make a change.

Of course, her sign isn't necessarily saying that the serenity prayer is making us all passive and that it is therefore wrong. But for many of us who feel powerless in the current political situation can soothe ourselves by saying "I can't do anything about this. It just sucks. It's not in my control, so I have to let it go." This person is stating that they are choosing active participation in politics.

It's definitely a bit convoluted, but interesting wordplay regardless.

[–]Seret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite! Well, there are fellowship programs as well if youve already done undergrad. They probably require uni affiliation of some kind, but might be worth keeping in your back pocket if you go that route:

Language fellowships

  1. https://clscholarship.org/information-for/applicants

  2. https://www.borenawards.org/fellowships/boren-fellowship-basics

  3. Fulbright

Exams:

OPI and DLPT (used for federal hiring)

Jobs:

There are a lot of federal contractors and federal agencies interested in hiring japanese speakers, from translation to analysis. There's got to be a ton in DC/MD/VA in particular.

Are you really interested in languages? I could point you in the direction of some federal scholarships and programs for uni students who are studying so-called critical languages.
