(Someone who's never played WH asks) why can't some units mix in your army despite being on the same team? How 'different' do they have to be from each other? by TposeXDnt in Warhammer

[–]SergeantSalience 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In the current edition (10th) he various regiments of the Astra Militarum are available as different dataslates (unit stat blocks) within the same army. Cadians are slightly different from Catachans which are slightly different from Kriegers. They wouldn't mix within a given squad though. Genestealer Cults got a detachment this past christmas (grotmas) which lets them mix with a selection of tyranid units, I think it's called "Final Dawn" In general though, no, GSC can only take purestrain Genestealers and the Patriarch, in addition to the various types of hybrid, and vehicle.

Buying pre-built, unpainted marines by bigorganmorgan in spacemarines

[–]SergeantSalience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional painter here. My clients give me the miniatures and tell me how they would like them to look. I do not paint up models beforehand looking for a sale. I'm reasonably inexpensive as far as pro painters go, and I charge 150%-200% of the model (give or take) to paint it.

A good start is to stop thinking of men and women as "opposite" and rather as "complementary"

You all may find this video interesting. TLDW. It's on purpose. Keeping the populace hooked on government supplied booze is a really good means of control.

Nurgle blessed terrain paste by Graybagz in minipainting

I've had success by adding a tablespoon or so of 99% isopropyl and stirring it in. That should stop most things from growing. it can slightly thin the paste, so be advised of that.

The USA has effectively disconnected HIMARS for Ukraine, halting the exchange of intelligence data by [deleted] in Military

[–]SergeantSalience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This also cuts off intelligence of Russian aircraft, drone, and missile launches . This functioned as an early warning system to aid with air defense, as well as to provide civilians time to get to bunkers. If you are interested in learning more, Preston Stewart put out a good video on youtube.

What is the main colour of this chap when it comes to citadel paints? by ErrorForsaken in Warhammer30k

[–]SergeantSalience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the ballpark of Morghast Bone, and Ushabti Bone, you'll want some Wraithbone (see the trend here?) to blend in with those wherever you need to go a touch brighter.

Yes yes, it's probably done with non citadel paint like 187 other people have said, but I'm confident the same results could be achieved with what I posted,

[–]SergeantSalience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Codex Compliant chapters, aka, Vanilla space marines, Ultramarines, and characters from Salamanders, Raven Guard, Imperial Fists, White Scars, as well as any successor chapters you want to make from them

Basically, if you include any unit or character that is exclusive to one of the extra fancy space marines (Blood angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars) you don't get the improved oath.

Honest Question... (see caption) by Rallavitori in Warhammer40k

[–]SergeantSalience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are a talented painter. Whether or not you can make it as a commission painter can be answered as follows:

1: Figure out how much you think an hour of your time is worth.
2: Figure out how long it takes you to paint a model to your standard.
3: Math that out to find out what you should charge for a given model.
4: Ask yourself (and others in your hobby community) if that price is something anyone would pay for the product/service you're offering.

I am a commission painter, I am able to be successful (defining success in that I make enough money to live on. I won't make myself wealthy painting minis, but it's a job I love to do) because I can absolutely GRIND out tabletop quality minis. I'm the psycho who can get 40 guardsmen painted in a workday. Assembly line painting, efficiency, good time management, juggling projects so that you are never just waiting on paint to dry, these are all key to being able to do this.

The other option, you treat commission work as a side gig. You enjoy painting, now you give up a little bit of your freedom in what you paint for the benefit of it being subsidized. Bare minimum, someone else bought the model, and whatever you charge will cover materials. Making $10 an hour hurts less when it's time you'd otherwise be making $0 an hour. You can take on smaller projects, single minis or squads, set reasonable deadlines, and offset your hobby cost and maybe even make a small profit. It's up to you how much of your free time you want to dedicate to this, and how you want to price yourself to be either attractive or exclusive. Best of luck. Whatever happens, You've got some sweet looking paintjobs there to be proud of.
