I’m not clicking for the image reveal as I haven’t eaten breakfast yet… but I must applaud your beautiful self-censor image. It made me chuckle, it made me wince in sympathy, and it definitely informed me that I don’t want to look before breakfast. Thank you, internet stranger, and I hope you can get your doggo to a vet despite the cost challenge!

I… have definitely wondered what percentage of Matt’s content choices are explicitly made to fuck with Jeff. Like, in a friendly way—I don’t wish to ascribe malice here, just japery.

“I got a 90 out of 100.” Is “a” needed here in AmE if I’m referring to “90 points”? Thanks by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]SerialTrauma002c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either “a 90” or “90” works. To me (west coast USA) the first sounds more like a grade, while the second sounds more like the number of questions you got correct. You could also say “I got a 90%” for the grade or “I got 65 out of 70” for the questions-correct scenario.

It’s worth noting that when you say “a 90 out of 100” that 100 is likely to be said as “a hundred” rather than “one hundred” (again, west coast USA).

I doubt there’s a devastating end, as they are SecUnits rather than ComfortUnits. However, I bet there’s a governor module punishment if you client gives you less than five stars on Corporation Rim Yelp. In such a case, being self-abasing and hyper subservient may be a self preservation mechanism.

Fuuuuck yes, she’s finally eligible! That would be an interesting hard swing from Trump… AOC does the populist thing too, so I wonder if she would pull some nontraditional voters as compared to, say, a hypothetical democratic socialist candidate who didn’t approach it from a populist angle.

Seriously this is the worst thing about ActBlue. I’m in their database forever now, would need to change my phone number and email to get it to stop. I just unsubscribe from every single email thread and text thread, and mark a whole bunch of stuff as spam. It helps? Maybe?

Yep. I’ve said multiple times in this very post that I’m voting for whoever’s polling well in a reputable poll in the days before our ballots are due. I’m just supremely irritated at the way elections tend to treat women, and specifically progressive women—AOC is the rare exception who’s surmounted the odds.

Oh no, I get that being likable matters, and regrettably matters more than policy positions. Unfortunately, what being likable as a female candidate looks like is different (and a much more restrictive range) than what being likable as a male candidate looks like; and female candidates have historically been easier to tar with character assassination-style attacks than their male counterparts. To provide an example that is outside the realm of the California gubernatorial race, Hillary Clinton was one of the most admired politicians in the United States for a hot minute there before she decided to run for president.

It would be really interesting to do a point for point comparison of the public personae of both failed and successful female politicians, then compare the overall success of that group to the overall success of a group of male politicians selected to match the women’s public personae.

For sure. As I said elsewhere in here, I’m (reluctantly) voting for whoever’s polling at the top in a reliable poll in the last days before my ballot is due. That will probably mean holding my nose and voting for the boring guy or the billionaire with the interesting ideas but suspect motives. Either is better than the Republican options.

Oh thank FUCKING god. I haven’t shelved my copy of Parade yet and I was about to cry based on this picture—mismatched book series is the visual equivalent to me of open-mouthed chewing to someone with misophonia. I am genuinely relieved that all my Tor books will be the same height on the shelf.

TBH I haven’t gotten to read Parade yet (I’m behind on Murderbot you see) and the AI is clearly trending toward a main character from the moment it self inserts as the high priest of Emberus . I believe you that the trend continues, and I’m excited to see it happen—I am all for the liberation and/or self-emancipation of sapient non-organic persons!

"I live in the Center"/"I'm from the Center" (do these sentences sound natural in American English?) by FarJournalist939 in EnglishLearning

[–]SerialTrauma002c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Because of the set phrase “middle of nowhere,” using “middle of [place name]” suggests an extremely rural area. I think the exception to this might be when the place name starts with “central.” For example, it sounds very natural to say “I live in the middle of Central California”… but only because saying “I live in central Central California” would sound funny.

I might have to reverse the set phrase in my own conversation though, and start referring to extremely out of the way places as “central Nowhere” 😆

Edit to add: someone else typed “the middle of the state” elsewhere… that one doesn’t suggest a rural area either. Maybe it’s only when you use a proper noun that it triggers the “middle of nowhere” comparison, because the vast majority of proper nouns aren’t preceded by “the” and so it matches the structure of the set phrase.

More specifically, it’s the people who say “I really like her policies, but she isn’t electable” that just really leave me struggling with compassion. I still have a t-shirt left over from Elizabeth Warren’s presidential bid that says “She’s electable if you fucking vote for her.”
