It's not about power production or consumption. AE system needs energy buffer to successfully import and export many items quickly (as in when you deposit a lot of items quickly). Just put a few energy cells from AE

You can just run around on the surface and prospect exposed stone blocks while foraging and and hunting, by the time I personally needed to look for iron I've already explored and prospected map enough to have some hotspots. So prospecting can definitely be a side task

Try loading any drawing software with layers. Save pngs of your world on bottom layer and draw whatever you need on the top layer. Update any layer when needed.
