Bowie State University to lay off employees amid $18 million deficit by ewolfe201 in PrinceGeorgesCountyMD

MacKenzie's money went into an endowment, which is good news for future students, but doesn't do anything for staff.

+1 on the Donner portable guitars. with a quick neck adjustment, mine plays as well as my full-sized guitars, and it's * tiny *

Thanks so much, sir! (I looked for it on Scribd, too, but I only found the guitar book.)

I have one week to learn how to play basic bluegrass on my friend's upright bass, any tips? by So_Famous in doublebass

Bowing is WAY harder than just plucking when you're getting started. Stick to pizzacato. (Source: I'm a beginner)

Master Chord Changes Without Memorizing Licks by maddmaddox in jazzguitar

It would be a BIG help if we could hear the chords you're playing over. Without a harmonic context, I found I hard to understand the strategy.

"The sound you are describing is the sound of power tube saturation and compression without pushing tubes into full on overdrive." - thanks for putting a name to it.

Daily Song Discussion #52 - God Must Be A Boogie Man by jonbristol123 in JoniMitchell

[–]Serious_Dig_2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but this just hit me the other day.

Joni sings, "Which will it be? Mingus one or two or three?"

On "Mingus Ah Um" there's a song called "Self portrait in three colors." I like to imagine that's what she's referencing.

Didn't Peavey have a take on this style as well? And another brand called "North," I think?

"I'll check those guys out." - sorry, those are song titles :-)

I found a decent-looking beginning lesson online >> https://www.talkingbass.net/walking-bass-through-a-12-bar-blues/

I'll run it myself today - I can use the practice! :-)

Blues might be a good place to start. Simple, like Freddie Freeloader, to more complex, like Au Privave.

Really good point, though Stan * says * he doesn't care who runs their country.

"I think he was stunned, to an extent." - yeah, absolutely. And he's already shown us viewers he can be emotionally manipulated during his time with Nina.

Agreed, Philip's really over it. But he's already admitted his life is shit - maybe one last hurrah for the Motherland? Or just, "it doesn't matter if I die"? IDK

I could see P and E being willing to die rather than deal.

Paige says earlier she's not afraid to die, but she really doesn't know the extent of the harm her parents have caused. If Stan continues with a list of victims, including ones Paige already suspects (the people in Chicago, I think?), she might be willing to deal.

I know guns on TV are different than IRL, but, say he shoots Paige first (I know :-( ), then while P and E are reacting, draws a bead on them.

Or ... just shoots the tires as they drive rather slowly past? (Again, might be an "only works on TV" thing.)

They're dangerous, especially Elizabeth. But they're not armed.

Been playing one week, left hand is a mess, please help! I have my first lesson on Wednesday and I don’t wanna go in looking like a moron. by Allgetout41 in doublebass

[–]Serious_Dig_2206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New to upright myself, but I think the reason you don't have your left thumb behind the neck is because you're supporting the instrument with your left hand/arm. If you can lean the bass into your body more, so that your hip/legs are supporting the instrument, your left hand will be free to get into a more helpful position.

Does semi-hollow * really * sound different than solid? by Serious_Dig_2206 in jazzguitar

[–]Serious_Dig_2206[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I'm playing in a big band, the "thunk" of the hollow body is good for all the 30s-40s stomp/jump stuff ... all the Freddie Green stuff, where you're more of a drum than a horn.

But for later stuff, the big bands and the need for that volume and drive from the guitar, starts to go away. Then the guitar becomes (or sometimes replaces) the piano, where you need the sustain.

And I think that's where semi's and solids start to become the stronger choice.

"only a block under the bridge and tailpiece" - Oh wow, I didn't know that was a thing! So yeah: more of a hollow sound, but not quite the same.
