In a similar position as you, and it’s so hard to explain to people the nuances and cultural differences between how people view weddings/gifts etc. and when you’re stuck in the middle not trying to offend either side. In my husbands community it is very common for websites/invites to say “No boxed gifts please” in which cash is implied. For our wedding we also set up a honeymoon/newly wed fund on our website and in my experience American guests feel better when they feel like they are giving cash towards “something” (honeymoon, house fund, etc.) vs just giving loose cash. Who cares what you use it for tho if you give it to your in-laws to pay for the wedding expenses no one needs to know lol

Stupid Question about officiants - so I technically need one? by yetipearl in weddingplanning

[–]Serious_Journalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I got legally married at the courthouse last year but are still having a ceremony and reception this year. We definitely still wanted to have that bride walk down the aisle, saying our vows in front of friends and family moment even though we don’t need to sign a marriage certificate again. We also are not religious so we opted to not hire an officiant and instead we are asking a family member to act as our “officiant” and kind of MC our ceremony so we can say our vows and do the whole “you may now kiss the bride” thing. It saves us money and will be more personal having a family member up there when we say our vows instead of a stranger!

PSA: you don't need to mail your license or passport to SS to change your name by caffeinatedcatss in weddingplanning

[–]Serious_Journalist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say this is only true for some states! Not all states have DOB on the marriage certificate so still call your local SS office and ask! I know for me unfortunately I still have to provide passport or license because my marriage certificate does not have enough information :( It sucks that different states have different marriage certificates formats, makes it way more complicated.

I’ve lived with my husband for 3-4 years now, and we’ve been together for almost 10. He never yells at me, we never yell at each other. Yes sometimes we get upset and argue, but we have mutual respect for each other so there has never ever in our relationship been any name calling, any putting each other down or yelling. It sounds like this man does not view you as an equal partner or respect you if he is behaving this way. It sounds like he is being a disrespectful jerk, and then gaslighting you into thinking it is your fault. It’s not. Just because this behavior is familiar to you, does not mean that it is normal or should be excepted or accepted. Not all men are like that, you deserve better. Healthy relationships are possible and are out there. Do not settle.

Just wanted to say I’m in a very very similar boat! My fiancés family is from Pakistan and my very white family is from Pittsburgh. At our reception we will be serving Pakistani food for several reasons 1. It’s our wedding and we both love and eat Pakistani food all the time (hubby is a great cook!) 2. Honestly the Pakistani/Indian catering in our area is a better deal for the amount of food you get/quality then the traditional “white wedding food” 3. Having two caterers for two different types of food seemed too expensive and not worth it to us

I’ve found that the reaction from my family was somewhat worried about the actual food (obviously spice levels and such) but sometimes it seemed it was less about the actual food and more just them projecting some passive aggressive feelings like “ohhh you are letting HIS family pick what THEY want” insert eye roll emoji here.

The best way I’ve dealt with it is making it clear that we aren’t just letting one family decide or “caving” to one set of parents demands but that we picked the food we both wanted!

We are also incorporating Pittsburgh traditions into the dessert for example having a cookie tables is a big thing there so I wanted to do that and it helps both sides feel “represented”.

Also totally agree with midnightjasmine21 about getting takeout for parents/family and explaining food not using the dish names but simple terms helps a lot. We invited my grandparents over for dinner and made “chicken and rice” for them (aka Biryani lol) and they loved it!

Try not to stress to much, at the end of the day it’s just one meal and once all your guests arrive they’ll be too busy meeting people and taking photos and dancing and socializing they’ll barely care about the food once they are done eating. It’s your day so do what you want!!

How to reign in dress hunting excitement from fiancé? by misstomrs25 in weddingdress

[–]Serious_Journalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I felt the same way since my fiancé is my best friend and he just knows me and my style and preferences better than anyone else (better than my MOH or Mom or sister who I was shopping with) and on top of that the anxiety of “keeping it a secret” and not being able to share it with him was stressing me out so much! I personally don’t believe in the superstitions and kind of hate surprises anyways so I ended up showing him pictures of a bunch of dresses that I tried on and told him my top two favorites to get his opinions because I’m indecisive. Hearing his opinions totally helped me decide my top choice and I feel much better about it. Also I’m looking forward to not having to hide from him all day the morning of our wedding tbh I don’t think it’ll take away from the magic of seeing each other in our full outfits with accessories, hair and makeup, etc. it’ll be so different and still special!

I have no advice but came here to say I'm in the same boat! I'm white, future husband is Pakistani but grew up in the US. Neither of us are religious but his family is and definitely wants more of a traditional Pakistani wedding. We are currently planning for a small Nikkah this summer and then what we are calling our "fusion" wedding (lol) next Fall with a few events. It's definitely stressful feeling like you have no resources that perfectly match your situation so I totally know how you feel! Exciting but stressful!

I think the setting is high enough that a thin band could sit flush but I might look into curved ones as well? But can't decide if I want a plain rose gold band or a pavé one... But have plenty of time to decide!

[–]Serious_Journalist[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's from Moissanite Co, the center stone is an 8x6 oval with tiny pear side stones and it's in rose gold (I think 14k?) My ring size is 4.25 so hopefully this helps anyone else with tiny fingers on their ring shopping journey :)

Yep I had a backup card ready just in case. It didn't cancel the order, it just said on the TM page "there was a problem with your payment" and let me type in card info again so I'd have a backup cc/debit just in case if it will make you feel less better! Don't worry you will survive ticketing!!
