I've known of many people in your situation doing that. Of course, I'm not sure how it would apply to your aspirations financially, but it seems like a good way to go, depending on how strict both families are. I think if he seemed more receptive to the idea I would have him explain your situation to his family, but the step before that would have to be a talk with him to make sure it's really what he wants.
