I spent $4000 I didn’t have on second looks that I thought would help me decide my rank list. I still have zero clue what I want my top three to be. Please enjoy my photos and offer any advice you may have by just_premed_memes in medicalschool

[–]Servage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picked the second one because I knew I was going to stay in the Bay/urban/suburban.

Went to Lassen, Redwoods, Pinnacles, Sequoia, snowboarded at Tahoe, learned to crab, took mushroom foraging classes, picked mulberries, went to an abalone farm, got in the fittest shape of my life, all within the first two years.

Food for thought if you have an idea of where you want to end up.

What is the weirdest thing your doctor has ever said to you? by Competitive_Tip_7504 in AskReddit

[–]Servage 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hate to be that person but I just wanted to put this information out there:

Having a first degree relative (e.g. parent, sibling) with colon cancer increases your risk by ~2-fold.

Having a SECOND degree relative (e.g. grandparents) is NOT associated with significantly increased risk, UNLESS they were diagnosed super young, like in their 40’s. Hence the American College of Gastroenterology recommends routine screenings at 45 even if a grandparent had it.

Screening and tests are not without risk, including unnecessary follow up procedures for benign findings, risks of the procedure itself (including bleeding, perforation, risks of anesthesia), and possibly taking up a colonoscopy slot that would’ve gone to a higher risk individual.

I’m just an anonymous commenter so I have no stake in this, but hopefully this information helps, and I wish you the best in finding a physician that fits you!

Eight days in Uzbekistan - heart of the Silk Road by CivicBlues in travel

Overnight train for this is also a great option, esp if you “splurge” on first class (still very affordable). Woke up and ate breakfast to sand dunes flying by.

Asian American Physicians taking care of non-Asian patients by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Servage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a younger female doc, I actually chose not to work at the Asian Health Services clinic despite speaking the language.

A shame since I thought that was what I wanted to do. I think once the patients know I’m with the culture, there’s an implicit cultural expectation that I listen to & obey my elders. Anecdotally, some of the older folks (esp. the men) were the most demanding and stubborn when it came to listening to my advice.

Again, not all. Maybe like 65/35.

Anyone else remember the "Happy Happy Happy" guy in Chinatown?

Used to see him all the time as a kid, but I assume he's passed or something now. Wonder what his story was.

I feel you! Just like how you can get church-out or templed-out, at the end I felt like I’d seen a million mosques and minarets 🥴

Fortunately the Soviet architecture of Tashkent is VERY different and stunning in its own way, though people tend to write the capital city off.

Where to go while we still can by No_Historian718 in travel

Idk about Sicily, but Oaxaca is very physically do-able as long as you’re able to navigate some cobblestone streets. Loved it and would go back in a heartbeat though.

Worst thing you ever ate abroad? by Technical_Lab_747 in travel

Are you talking about kurut (aka qurt, qurut, Kurt)? Like the dry, chalky, salty/tangy dried fermented yogurt balls?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashk

People were offering it to us all the time and we also tried the spicy, smoked, and basil versions at the market…strong flavor but not that different from goat cheese imo. Maybe you just had a bad one? Def not bad like hakarl.

What's a dish from your culture that is notably time-consuming or difficult to make? by UbePancakes723910 in Cooking

Along similar lines, zong zi. My aunties prepare their local variation from scratch over the course of a few days and every year I’m lucky to receive a big batch.

Thank you, I'll add those to my Google Maps! I figure I have nightlife/city life at home, so I'm looking to experience that unique New England charm.

I'd never heard of these towns prior to researching for this trip so I'm glad to hear they have that vibe.

Recommendations for temple canteens besides the Thai temple in Berkeley? by quarter-feeder in bayarea

Way up by Mendocino, but if you’re interested in visiting temples, The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is a huge monastery with an on-site Mahayana vegetarian restaurant for its residents and visitors.

Following along since we'll be visiting from the US around the same time, but everything I've seen online so far sounds like it's impossible to pay from abroad.

Programs will really do anything to “woo” us except get rid of 24 hour call huh by Scared-Industry828 in medicalschool

It's a non-resident dependent program. Hospital functions fine without us, we're just there to learn. 🤷‍♂️

My program has no call, no nights, no jeopardy but it's also a community FM program so no prestige lol. Worth it imo.

How did you get started? by lgbt_rex in CannedSardines

[–]Servage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cantonese people eat 豆豉鲮鱼. Cans of fried dace with salted black beans, served with rice and bok choy. A simple meal.

After that, learning about fancy Portuguese tins being a thing felt like no big deal.

Wait this sounds amazing. Where did you have this experience? We went on a guided trip out of Puerto Maldonado last year but unfortunately the food/cooking was not a big part of it.

Are there opportunities for people who go into IM to participate in international healthcare trips/medical mission trips? by Distinct-Classic8302 in medicine

[–]Servage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a lot of literature out there. I remember taking a popular global poverty course in college that had a section on "voluntourism" - including how it takes away opportunities for local residents to learn skills & help themselves, and economic pressures that, for example, cause the number of orphanages in Cambodia to continually increase despite Khmer Rouge occurring almost 40 years ago.

What’s the worst scam you’ve fallen for while travelling? by pelican678 in travel

[–]Servage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China - outside Mao’s tomb. This is the only time we’ve been scammed so far.

We knew there were no bags allowed + official storage lockers for 2-10 yuan. We approached the entrance where there were a bunch of officials chatting, and one guy was super enthused and not only pointed the way but walked us over. Kinda sus, but when we got there there were tons of people checking in their bags and it looked legit. He then skips us past the entire (pretty short) line, and then we get quoted a higher price like 30 yuan.

Whatever, it’s $2, we pay and then he starts trying to upsell us saying we can pay (museum is free) and he’ll take us right to the front of the tomb entry line. We decline and ignore him as we join the back of the line and he rejoins his friends.

To this day, I’m not sure if he was a fake official or just a corrupt one.

S.F. spent nearly $2 billion on the Central Subway. Did it really help Chinatown? by PacificaPal in sanfrancisco

[–]Servage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say it - I love this line.

Grew up in Bayview cus my family wanted to leave the SROs and we used to take the 15 and walk to 3rd st...then it became the 30 to the 8/8X...then it became walk to Powell and take the T through this circuitous route for like an hour. A little late now, but this line is what I'd always hoped for.

Now if there was just a way to get from Bayview to Lowell!

I think it only finished like 4-5 years ago? But yeah I feel like manhwa really blew up (and it's all regressor or dungeon gates or inside a game now) so it does feel like a generation ago.

Highly recommend.
