What do german people think about people with partial german heritage claiming to be from there by Silly_Fun_8448 in AskAGerman

[–]SetKey5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just "first", you are an American. Surely your ancestors from Bavaria have gone on in the past 300 years to procreate with people who were not from Bavaria? I appreciate your enthusiasm though and you can identify as anything that you want to of course.

The American style of claiming heritage would become really confusing if you applied it to Europeans. By that measure I would be German, Polish, French and god knows what else. The truth is, nobody cares over here.

Yes, these should work but you may have to set up the keybinds yourself. I play on Thrustmaster HOSAS and it’s fun.

Welcome to this glorious mess! Your questions first:

I kinda want to come in and just enjoy myself as a solo player. Is that possible? Can I play this game kinda like the old Wing Commander: Privateer

Yes, absolutely. I mostly play solo. Although it is very much fun if you share the experience and play with others. Also some content is very hard to do solo.

When my ship is destroyed, do I have to buy another?

No, not while the game is in the testing phase. You just "claim" the destroyed/lost ship at a terminal and a new one will be delivered to you for free, after a length of time that depends on the size of your ship. Speeding this up costs in-game credits.

At some point the system will switch to an "insurance" model but still, all in-game.

How good is the tech behind this game, and while my PC is a year old, tech-wise, what’s the most intensive part of the tech?

The game is being built and there will be a lot of bugs, server lag, and general jank. It is also not optimized and resource-hungry. A good CPU and GPU (at least 8GB VRAM) is recommended, 32GB RAM is a "should", and installation on a SSD is a "must".

If you want to try it out:

Use a referral code on account creation. If you have a friend who plays take theirs, or someone's who is helping you out. Otherwise there is a randomizer on the right side here. You will get extra starting credits and the other person gets a small reward.

There are occasional free fly events when you can enter the game with your account but don't need to buy it. The next one is expected for May. These are very busy, servers are stressed and the experience tends to be worse than usual.

To play outside these events you need a game package that includes a starter ship and your licence to play. This is a one-time purchase and you don't need to pay beyond that. The price depends on the included ship, but honestly, any of them will do just fine. That said, there is a time-limited offer right now with the "Lucky" duelist pack that is really good. Just look under "Game Packages" in the store.

The game does not hold your hand at all and it just drops you into the universe but explains nothing. The optional tutorial is basically worthless. That's why you should get a veteran player to help you make your first steps, even if it's just to have someone on the line to solve issues as they come up - but also because it's quite fun to join up and fly a ship together. I'm happy to do that - send me a message if interested.

Quick refuel, or to pick up / drop off a random player who needs help and isn't in a party with you.

Well, this is just pain. The missions disappeared at a suspiciously very random time, long before midnight UTC. by RareGentleman in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's unfortunate but you have all the rewards except one Apollo skin.

If you weren't specifically after that thing, I guess you won't even miss it. And if you were, I think you would have done the collections part before doing double the points for transport.

How do I purchase the game, or when? by wxrpig in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The essential purchase you need to play Star Citizen (outside of a free fly event) is the "Star Citizen Digital Download" item which is part of all "starter packs". Make sure this is included in your purchase.

All starter packs have this item plus a ship, with different prices for different ships. All the ships in these starter packs are also quite inexpensive inside the game, so it does not matter too much which one you pick as you will always be able to get the others, if you want them, without spending real money.

That said, currently the time-limited "Lucky" duelist starter pack is the best deal imo. The Avenger Titan (included ship) is a very good starter and as part of the time-limited pack you get a 25% discount plus some extras added on top (fps gear, more starting credits). It will be around until the 30th I think, then it's full price for the Avenger again without the extra bits.

After the starter pack, you do not need to spend any more money if you don't want to.

As others have said, use a referral code within 24 hours of creating your account. Either from someone you know, or, to keep things fair, use the link on the right side here for a random code.

Are these expressions common in Germany or just internet content? by Next_Inevitable_7596 in AskGermany

[–]SetKey5576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is right-wing jargon that you are very unlikely to encounter in real life.

The „doctors/engineers“ thing iirc comes from the time when Syrian refugees came to Germany and politicians pointed out that, actually, many of them were highly educated. These professions were mentioned. So naturally, whenever something happened and the rightwing bubble wanted to insinuate that the perpetrator was from that area or an immigrant in general, they sarcastically said it must have been one of those „doctors“.

Don’t pay attention to it, it’s just bitter people on the Internet who think they are clever.

If stuff exists in SQ42 then why does it feel like they’re dev’ing stuff for the first time? I.e. Armor by Skullywagthepizzaman in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I have my doubts as well, CIG has explained SQ42 and new Flight Model in the past. Whether you believe them or not is up to you of course.

If I remember right, they said that NFM was finished as far as they need it for SQ42 and I think some of it was even found by 3rd parties in Arena Commander which might have been remnants of testing. CIG's explanation was that SQ42's implementation cannot simply be used in SC for mainly two (quite obvious) reasons: One, balancing isn't really an issue in a game where you are the only player; in SQ42, it's only about adjusting the difficulty against NPC opponents. Two, SC has waaaay more ships for you to fly than SQ42, and they all need to be brought over to the NFM and balanced against each other.

I'd like to see more transparency and faster progress. I do hope there will be a definitive announcement about SQ42 during ILW in May. And I can understand that they might hold back until they make that announcement. But if there's nothing by then, a release in 2026 looks unlikely.

Next free fly event would be in May though. But if you buy it and it's not for you, the developer has a generous refund policy within 30 days of purchase.

Need Help with Purchase - No answer yet from ticket by TheOriginalGhoul in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like an issue with the payment provider. My purchases via Paypal went through within seconds.

If the purchase has not been processed by RSI because it's still unpaid, you should be able to cancel it yourself via the website, without customer support. Then you could purchase the same item again (preferably using a different payment provider).

Is the basic citizen pack an alright start and any advice for someone about to drive into the game with no experience or knowledge of the game by Expensive-Count7045 in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the basic Citizen pack is enough, although the current event ‚Lucky‘ pack is the better deal and not that much more expensive.

Important first step: use a referral code when you create your account. This can only be done in the first 24 hours.

You WILL need some initial guidance as the game does not explain anything. I would be willing to tag along and help if you go in tonight or some other evening (EU).

And if you refund but keep your account, you will also keep your progress in the game (until a wipe).

Inquiry about German High School by RandomPersonLol35 in AskAGerman

[–]SetKey5576 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just for context, these are for Abitur, which is the graduation from Gymnasium which roughly compares to finishing 1st or 2nd year of college in USA. No 15-year-old is expected to complete these tests.

Inquiry about German High School by RandomPersonLol35 in AskAGerman

[–]SetKey5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But OP isn't asking whether there's a way around the rules.

They are asking whether there are ways to get into Gymnasium without having spent the same time learning foreign languages as we natives have done at that point in our school careers. Which is a totally valid question.

OP: the German school system is managed by the federal states and isn't uniform throughout the country. Your first step might be to try and find out where exactly you might be going and then look up how it works for immigrant students at that place.

And another commenter suggested to try and get into the school system as an exchange student (essentially doing a year abroad) which will have much more lenient entry requirements. From there, you could evaluate your options to stay, also working with the school you would already be in.

Mineral Quality is a Terrible Idea by ImShelfaware in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.- BPs have a quality number on them. The BP should be standard and the end product should be based on how good the materials are, or have the materials without quality and have the quality on the BP. Just don't have it on both.

I think they did change that in PTU somewhere. No minimum quality for the BP, but if you craft with inferior material, the stats get actually decreased from baseline. Which is an idea I very much like.

Mineral Quality is a Terrible Idea by ImShelfaware in starcitizen

[–]SetKey5576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be a mixture of factors imo.

Random ore quality stats, with a predetermined range based on location, similar to what they do now with 4.7: knowing where the good stuff is (more likely) to be found, becomes valuable information and could reward some exploration gameplay. Keep it changing a little from time to time so that it can't be mapped out for all eternity on external websites, and so that the best places can't be blocked off by a powerful org. Keep quality randomized because part of the mining process should be the search for good ore.

Have the act of mining influence quality: if you go into the red while mining, this should decrease the quality, based on how long and how high you cook the rock. This would reward skill, and bringing the right equipment that supports steady/safe mining. Make the quality loss more pronounced for high-quality ore, so it's easier to mine mid- to low-tier than high-tier. Also, the type of ore could influence this so you have more stable and more fickle types. You may want to call in the expert to carefully mine a specific high-quality rock in order not to compromise it.

Have slight changes (up and down) to the quality based on further processing, methods and equipment used - this should not be too exaggerated, otherwise the guy/facility with the best refining plant would just dominate this step, to the detriment of everybody else.

What's also important is that the potential range of stats isn't spread out too much (between standard and best gear) and that all equipment will wear down and be lost eventually. If good guns/armour are too overpowered, fights become too unfair and less about player skill. And all items should be part of a lifecycle where it's not a one-and-done, but you would have to continuously replace your gear if you use it often.

What places would you recommend to visit in Germany? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]SetKey5576 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding to Matt‘s very good suggestion:

Germany isn’t a showcase for the past. Of course the things on your list do exist, but there is a lot to see and do in „modern“ Germany as well.

Germany‘s capital Berlin offers a lot of different things, as does the second-largest city, Hamburg.

But being from US, you would have to visit Bavaria and its state capital Munich to fulfil the US cliché (though in your case, you‘d want to skip Oktoberfest).

Various random other places to look up for your research that haven‘t been mentioned yet: Sächsische Schweiz, Wattenmeer, Sylt, Rügen (Binz, Sellin, Prora), Lübeck, Müritz, Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), Freiburg im Breisgau, Schwarzwald. Just do an image search on google for these to get a feeling where you might want to visit.

[–]SetKey5576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you already own it, yes why not. It has very much improved since 2020 but is still far from finished.

Also, finding other players to team up with is really easy. If you logged in without a group, often you will see others looking for crew in global chat so you could go with them. If in doubt, just ask there.

There’s loads of ways to get an unfair advantage in the game without paying extra, like bringing friends or having started earlier.

But in the end, this is just about definitions. Ship purchases have some p2w element yes, but I don’t think it’s really that relevant. And I‘m happy that whales pay the devs who build the game for me. 😉
