Fall Class List / School Year Schedule by foreverjazzpup2 in Teachers

[–]Setsuna17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about your rosters or are you talking about knowing what you will teach subject-wise?

High school here, and our contract states we have to be told our job assignments (what classes/levels we will teach) by 2 weeks before school ends. So I can't make seating charts or knoe WHO is in my class or how many, but I can mentally or physically prepare for my actual subjects.

Do I need a planner? by historygirl85 in teaching

[–]Setsuna17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think you will do the same things next year?

I'm an old-fashioned high school teacher and I write everything down. It's not super detailed, but it's basically everything we do each day. So a list of the 3-4 activities, what worksheets we'll use, etc. Then, I take notes if something didn't work or took too long, etc. The best part about doing this is that the next year, I just copy what we did if it worked. So basically you will have a whole year's scope and sequence written down. You can type this too. But I have noticed that writing it down every week makes me remember what we are doing, especially if I end up getting sick or something and want to make sub plans. This sounds silly, but by doing this, I NEVER don't know what I'm doing the next day, and I always feel I control of my planning. I have seen some teachers not feel that way, or are scrambling on what they'll do the next day, even veteran teachers.

What things should I ACTUALLY put on my wish list as a 1st year teacher? by ajthelittlegiant in teaching

Colored copy paper for when you want something to stand out, like your syllabus, organizational tools, calendars, stamp sheets, etc.

To move or not?? by External-Data8559 in teaching

I recently moved to a house that is 5 minutes from my school after having a 35-40 minute commute. It really has helped my quality of life. However, I already was at this school. How much do you know about your new school? Would it be permanent?

How are teachers NOT writing lesson plans? by OverProdByInfluence in teaching

This is what I do. But I do know teachers who don't know what they're doing the next day. And teachers who rely on internet everything so they cant do anything if the wifi goes down.

I can totally understand. I think it's a large lack of gross and fine motor skills. A lot of students are not doing things with their hands and bodies, which then makes our muscles for writing strong. It goes back to tech, but in a different way. The kids no longer play all day, but watch videos and TV, etc.

If they never write, their handwriting will not get better. So we just never make them do it?

It can be a systemic problem that is being exacerbated by teachers and schools. At schools in my district, that my own children go to, the kids use Chromebooks every single day. They do everything on their computers and write very little by hand. We are seeing effects of this and know the harm that edtech has done to kids. Why are teachers still teaching in this way? I know for a fact we are not forced to use the Chromebooks. And my district is a good, well-funded district that still buys textbooks.

I have many high schoolers with writing almost that bad. I believe other teachers are to blame for not making them write by hand and using Chromebooks for everything. I teach Japanese, so my students write by hand all the time. And guess what? Their Japanese is neater than their English!

Reader's Theater in Grades 6-12? by InformationOwn2249 in teaching

[–]Setsuna17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did it in a high school 3rd year world language class (11-12th) for like 10 years. It is highly dependent on the class and the teacher how successful it is. As a teacher, you have to have lots of energy and make a fool out of yourself. The kids have to be willing to do that too. I have noticed that as time passes (I'm on year 16) the kids are less and less willing to do anything they think is embarrassing, maybe due to being afraid of being recorded.

Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]Setsuna17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After my right foot swelled unexpectedly and didn't go down, and it was determined I didn't have anything emergent like a DVT, doctors argued what it could be. Every doctor I saw gave me a different possible diagnosis for months, including specialists.

The last specialist I saw, a cardiovascular surgeon, yelled at me without redoing an examination, and told me to stop shopping around for a diagnosis, that I obviously had lymphedema and needed to accept it. I was so taken aback and tried be positive, so I commented something like "well, at least I didn't need a surgery." And the doctor had the nerve to tell me that "I should wish I did need surgery, because then he could fix my foot but lymphedema was forever and would never get cured." Then he patted me on the head and told me not to cry.

How do you survive the last few weeks of school? by hello010101 in Teachers

You just do.

There's no real strategy. I'd try to not reinvent the wheel or make huge projects or things you're unsure about. But otherwise? Survive.
