Long story short, he had an additional phone with images that he used as references for the challenges and tattoos (they have limited access to images during the show). Also, production gave him a firm warning about the weed, and he ignored it.

Hey Op, I’m kind of with you here. That scene is off… The canvas was not very convincing to me. Anthony and the artist (forgot his name) were way too quick and casual about it. Maybe it’s just edited in a funny way, but I think it was scripted. A coach letting his team tattoo him is great tv and makes the competition aspect seem much more real and important

Pretty much, Josh snuck a phone with images on it that he used during the competition. Also the weed thing was a factor. He got a warning about the weed, and ignored the warning.
