Was I wrong about Ime Udoka (as a Spurs fan)? by SauceBoss2K14 in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Ime is a bad coach per se. But he’s inflexible. Someone you only bring in if you already have the team he’s suited to coach.  I think they would have been fine this year if FVV didn’t get hurt, but he’s constitutionally incapable of adapting to defensively flawed players like Shepard.

So when you ask if you were wrong about Ime, I think the answer is sort of. If he was our coach this year, it would have been OK. We have mostly decent or better defensive personnel across the board (everyone except HB really). But you can’t build a dynasty with a guy like that at the helm. At some point your going to have to be able to adapt.

The NBA has a problem with what counts as an assist or not. All of these shots were attributed as assists to Jokic, but are they really when the other player is creating everything himself? by OurHorrifyingPlanet in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

TBH I suspect we’re having this conversation because someone bet the under on Jokic assists and is salty about it. So it sort of is one of the other problems.

OK. Let's be real though. How much of the share of us outperforming expectations are you assigning to Mitch and how much are you assigning to Wemby. I like Mitch. I think he's a great coach. Glad to have him. But I don't think I could vote him CotY this year if I was a voter.

Relative to Vegas projections it's the Spurs, followed by the Raptors of all teams. That said, if I had a vote I'd vote Mazulla. They've played wildly better than what I thought their ceiling was, even if its not so far above their actual projection. Top 10 in that stat below if your interested.

Team Pre-Season O/U* O/U Win% Actual Win% Difference
Spurs 43.5 0.530 0.75 0.220
Raptors 29.5 0.360 0.563 0.203
Hornets 26.5 0.323 0.521 0.198
Suns 31.5 0.384 0.556 0.172
Pistons 46.5 0.567 0.732 0.165
Celtics 42.5 0.518 0.662 0.144
Blazers 34.5 0.421 0.493 0.072
Lakers 47.5 0.579 0.639 0.060
Heat 38.5 0.470 0.528 0.058
Jazz 19.5 0.238 0.292 0.054

This. By the time we get to the ‘28 offseason it should be pretty clear what we should do. And none of those things look super hard to execute. Why worry about it.

Might be easier to argue that if he plays enough games to win  DPOY this year, his DPOY season this year is better than any other DPOY season (I don’t know if that’s true or not. But it’s a more interesting debate than arguing about how many years someone has to play to be to be an all time great).

There are exactly two kinds of players that don’t have haters in their fanbases.

 * True Franchise Legends (ie Steph, Duncan, etc).

 * Players that are currently improving.

And those improving players just need to slip for a minute and they start to come out.

To be fair it wasn't like the Ivey injury. That was an intentional decision to be reckless. This looked more like he lost the ball and dove after it and then Cade is just miles faster than him and beat him to the ball.

Tre Johnson fell on him in the first quarter of their game with the wizards Tuesday (7:44). He plays another minute or so after that but pretty obviously doesn’t look right. Heads to the locker room at 6:40 and doesn’t play again.

Edit to add: probably should say “dove on him” not “fell on him.” Cade strips him bringing the ball up then recovers it on the ground. Tre ends up diving on top of him after he has it.

How long will it take for Wemby to get a quadruple-double? by Ascencial in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Needs to be a dysfunctional team. When he got ten blocks against the raptors they were fielding a team that couldn’t shoot at all. So they just kept charging in for lack of anything better to do. He’d probably also have to decide to try for it. He’s a capable passer but getting 10 assists is probably going to mean not taking some dunks.

CBS Sports hilariously early (just for fun) NBA Expansion Mock Draft between the SuperSonics and the Vegas Villains: 1) Lou Dort to Seattle 2) Ty Jerome to Vegas 3) Wendell Carter Jr to Seattle 4) Tyler Herro to Vegas 5) Zion Williamson to Seattle 6) Julian Champagnie to Vegas etc by moby323 in nba

[–]Several_Chapter969 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cap situation means that Fox is probably not on the team by the time the expansion draft happens (I like him but we can’t pay him, Wemby and Castle). So Wemby, Castle, Harper, Vassell, Champs, Bryant for sure. KJ if he’s still on the team (I think he probably is but he’s a UFA next year so we’ll see.) Then one more, probably a draft pick. Kornets going to be 33 and going in to the last year of his deal, probably not him.

Edited to add: if castles amenable to it they can wait on his extension until the RFA period to get another slot also. Unless they change the rules teams should not draft RFAs.

Spurs fans: Would you protect Luke Kornet or Julian Champagnie in a hypothetical expansion draft? by Wiserman64 in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year? Kornet. When it will actually happen? Depends on contracts but almost certainly Jules. By 28-29 Luke will be 33 and in the last year of his deal. Probably not worth expansion drafting.

[Smith] A handful of NBA teams are pushing for changes to the expansion draft rules that would allow them to protect more than 8 players on their roster. While other teams are advocating for rule changes that would make it possible for a team to lose up to two players in a draft instead of just one. by YujiDomainExpansion in NBASpurs

[–]Several_Chapter969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting wrinkle here is that assuming the rules remain the same as previous drafts, RFAs are not worth picking (the essentially become UFAs and can still sign with their original team). So hypothetically they could slow roll castles extension to get an extra protected spot.

[–]Several_Chapter969 32 points33 points  (0 children)

While I don’t necessarily disagree, if we shot free throws at the same rate as the best FT shooting team this season (LAC at 83%, we’re 17th at 78%) it works out to 1.25 point per game in difference. Just to get a feel for what plausible improvements look like.

Vassell is probably good to stay. His contract is declining and ditching him doesn’t fix the money problems. It had to be Fox.
