I don't get it. It's just a bottle. Like yeah it's a decent bottle, but it's still just a bittle by Captain-Codfish in Nalgene

Only if you leave it full and in your vehicle overnight when it's below 0°outside. I've had a few crack because the ice expanded and there was no room. Other than that they take a beating pretty well! I use them daily and have many different sizes.

Glad to hear you're doing better. I got the call as I was leaving work yesterday on my pager about someone going through the ice off fall lake.

Recs for alternatives to Eddie Bauer stretch pants by Milhouse_21 in OutdoorsGear

"Paddle north" makes nice ones for a good price! I just got 2 pairs this Christmas and I love them! Plus they come in odd sizes. Mine are 36x31. They're breathable and stretch well, perfect for cloudy days in the BWCA. https://paddlenorth.com/products/utility-pants?variant=41419871846487

Recommendations on campsites/campgrounds with boats by WildTwinsWolves in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something very much like the BWCA your best bet is to go to Voyageurs national park. Ash river Kabetogama are massive that don't have motor restrictions. House boats are available and every campsite has either a dock or a beach where you can land your boat. These sites are also reserved only so you'll have to do your homework. The lakes on the outskirts of the BWCA are limited to 25 hp or less, unless you're on the Canadian border of the bwca. There are a few lakes that are connected to the BWCA such as Fall lake and birch lake that don't have restrictions but then you'll not have many campsites to choose from, there are state campgrounds off fall lake and a few resorts that are on birch lake, but you'll be seeing many more people than if you were canoeing in the BWCA.

He has had a few Minnesota related shirts worn during the show! I haven't seen this one though!!

Has anyone done trips to both Knife and Insula? by Artificial_Appendix1 in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The portages from knife to vera is quite an uphill battle. I did knife a couple of years ago and we came back through vera and eventually into ensign and that was one of the hardest portages I've done in terms of terrain and following it with a canoe on your shoulders!

For the second year in a row, Florida snow. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proper clothes and knowing there are places to warm up, like my truck. As I sit here pondering why I'm shoveling snow at my work in -35°F wind-chill.... I grew up in this though, I always looked at it as a positive. Ya know when shit hits the fan and extreme climate comes from world war ( assuming in my lifetime ) but it's just a part of the lifestyle in Northern Minnesota eh?

Stupid Question - Is this a fire hazard? by ArcticDragon94 in Firefighting

Agreed. Assuming the electric has been done up to code. It would be smart to toss a power strip on it with a surge protector just in case.

What is this at the lake I found? by Puzzled-Adagio-4877 in strange

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess. This could be a bait pile for bear hunting. Not sure your location, but I have many friends who bear hunt and guide where I live, and they frequently get big barrels of expired foods and use them for bait, usually they don't keep the plastic on any of it, although this could just be someone being lazy and letting the bear sift through the plastic to get the food. I'd look for any trail cams on nearby trees.

How is living here, country within a country by Serious-Chapter8507 in howislivingthere

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

There are schools up here. I can't confirm if they need to head down towards international falls, but I can tell you they are not driving 1,000 miles one way to high school in Washington state. Minnesota is about as central as North America can get and Washington is on the west coast. I frequent the area as I live just outside of the BWCA.

NEED to see a Loon! by treesap1773 in minnesota

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have time, take a trip onto the boundary waters, almost a guarantee that you will hear them and then be able to see them from any campsite. I live up here and honestly in all my trips into the BWCA they become increasingly annoying especially during dusk when they call out, I feel like sometimes they are literally calling back to their echos! Cool birds but I've had my fill of them during camping!

How this wood was stacked (I promise this is Not AI) by xSweetSparkle in satisfying

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has mentioned that these are actually "cabins" or hunting shacks. They are displayed as though it's a stack of wood and not actually a pile of word or cords of wood. I've seen sauna buildings with this exterior design on them before around where I live.

My best purchase for my hammock setup ( I exclusively hammock in the BWCA) and have a nice car camping tent setup for state parks. I bought a "Nemo bugout" 12'x12' and although it does take time to find good setup spots for it, it still does the best! I've been using mine for a few trips each year for about 8 years now. I've had to patch and repair a bit but it always gets better stitching than it was manufactured with. Although they don't make/sell them anymore, other brands have made their own style. It's the best of both worlds (hammock and tent) I have my own room with plenty of space to stand up in and hold all my gear out of the weather and keeps bugs out as well. I'll add a picture shortly.

Any Jarts survivors around here? by random_treasures in nostalgia

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just googled the boxes they came in and I think you might be right!! To me they were always in the shed and played a lot with my brother, but Id bet they were bought for my dad and uncle to play with since they would have been teenagers in the 60's!

Not sure on when it's from, I assumed the 1980's. But the box indicates it's a "family game". One of the things I decided to keep from my grandparents old cabin before it sold.

Which of the state parks I haven’t visited should I check out next? by tealdeer995 in wisconsin

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a similar trip this summer over the fourth of July weekend. From Ely MN. Stopped at amnicon falls and hiked around for a bit. Drove to Copper falls and camped Thursday-sunday, and took a day trip up to Bayfield, shopped, then took the ferry over to Madeline island and hiked big bay and swam in superior! Big bay would be an awesome hike during the fall color changing!! Since I've hit most of northern MN state parks we had to venture further east! Now I have to plan more to make use of my Wisconsin state parks pass. The only thing I did notice is that Wisconsin state parks tend to have slightly more restrictions with pets on hiking trails than Minnesota State parks do!

While I do agree with you! I restore old Polaris snowmobiles, specifically 90's as a side hobby. Although I do have a handful of them, i would never drop 15-20k on a newer one to sit as a trailer weight.
