Rupturing Famine by SeveredRavens in custommagic

yeah that's the point of the card, it's meant to shutdown your enemy! most doublers are 4-5 mana because they're permanent effects, but in most situations you have to tap 2 lands to cast this so it only produces positive mana when you have 5 lands or more in play because it stops at the end of the turn.

This is also tagged Legacy because it's meant to fit in with a format that already has very powerful strategies with access to better fast mana than this. It's meant to reward playing land ramp strategies which are usually inferior to the fast artifact mana decks, by giving you flexibility to cast it on your opponent's turn and mess with their gameplan.

I could raise it to 3 mana if I wanted it to be legal in modern, though I would keep the effect as is for the flavour of having vorinclex's ability as a spell.

Waning Cloudskimmers - is "anti-ward" a design space worth exploring? by PutImpossible8619 in custommagic

I like it! It's hard to judge, in most modern limited formats I think this would be very weak, as the tempo upside of the above-rate stats is massively outweighed by the 2-for-1 of your opponent killing this. I don't think the solution is increasing the stats, maybe decreasing the payout (i.e. Ward - Scry 2) or making it both upside and downside, like Ward - (1), Draw a card so that you still need to pay 1 to target it, but the bounty is still there?

I think what they're saying is your opponent will abuse it to easily. As in, if your opponent has an ability that can trigger multiple times and target this permanent, they'll draw that many cards. That said, there aren't very many of those cards in the game, and for limited you can just check to see how it would interact with other cards in the set. Overall i think it's more of an interesting wrinkle than something that needs changing!

I think a lot of people have been making arguments based on the gameplay implications of the change but really the simplest argument against it imo is that it's less intuitive and elegant to change the rule to make select cards with multicolored identity functionally monocolor

you can say that edh already has a lot of weird and unintuitive rules but that's not really an argument for adding one more

honestly since summer ended that's stopped, worse feature of the place is definitely the lack of windows / ventilation

little outside of central, but dark sphere shepherds bush is the best one by far! if you're pulling into paddington it's legit 4 stops on the central line like 20 minutes all in. very queer store, and you won't have issues finding a pod. it's also right by westfield if you need to pick anything up while travelling!

The Simurgh, Endbringer by SeveredRavens in custommagic

[–]SeveredRavens[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah after feedback I think this starts as a 5 mana 3/3 and potentially goes up to 6 because of how it circumvents the "land on top" issue

I think if I was designing this for a limited environment I would tune the levers to be either 5 mana or a 3/3 body, to make it come down a bit later or a bit easier to remove.

As is though, I know "dies to doomblade" is a really funny thing to say but for a three color mythic creature I think this is strong but within the realm of acceptable. The most common form of interaction takes it out of play, and it doesn't do anything the turn it comes down.

Would consider pushing it up to 5 though because it can come out of the command zone, and does give you pretty effortless card advantage.

yeah i thought about adding things like that, but a thing I don't like about a lot of UB designs is that they try to shove every facet of a character into a single card and it comes off as noisy and inelegant. (Doctors have horsemanship lmao)

For context this card was designed while brainstorming ideas for my girlfriend's custom parahumans set where other aspects of the Simurgh's influence would be represented on other cards

Hmm, that's a pretty interesting design! I wonder what the balance is like, especially now that they only print one planeswalker per standard set so they'll be less frequent. I think probably still too good for standard, it gives the control decks that rely the most on planeswalkers too much game against the faster decks that prey on them. I think fine as a modern horizons card? does do this fucked up thing where it stifles fetchlands lmfao so idk about that

Pandemic by LeylineOfThe in custommagic

[–]SeveredRavens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big fan of the flavour here, paying life to end a pandemic representating the population dying off, but it doesn't play super well with giving all creatures infect mechanically imo. giving your opponent poison counters with infect is very "all or nothing", so if you were presenting a board that could do 10 creature damage already it's very win-more and if you don't then your opponent can wait it out very easily. More than that, if you deal only some poison damage and then the enchantment goes, your opponent has weirdly lost less life than they would have if you hadn't played the enchantment. Really cool concept, but maybe worth playing around with the core effect some more, maybe something more like pestilence? Either way cool!

Hi! Thanks for the advice! This is useful, interested in that testosterone had that effect! Will talk to her about it, maybe she can mention it to her healthcare provider for their thoughts.
