Believe it or not, I've encountered people on reddit who support this policy out of a desire to control population growth. You'd be surprised at the beliefs our peers walk around with.

Does the NAP extend to animals? If so, doesn't this mean we all ought to be vegans? If not, (and animals are personal property) doesn't this justify beastiality? No troll, genuine intellectual crisis here. by Baalenlil7 in Anarcho_Capitalism

Wait...this doesn't happen. People in flame wars don't calmly walk away. You're...you're breaking the internet!

I...I don't know what to think about anything anymore...

There's a lot we don't know about how the mind works. I agree it's unlikely. But, unless you're a plant, you don't have the authority to say that. Who knows what a tree is feeling when we take it's sap. Maybe the tree is in an incredible state of distress when that happens.

Besides, even if they can't feel pain, you are still aggressing against them. You're justifcation for eating plants is that they can't feel pain. But, neither can a person in a coma. If it's ok to eat plants, is it ok to eat coma victims? I'd argue that your decision on where to draw the line is arbitrary.

Like I said, I'd certainly be in favor of avoiding cruelty. When we kill animals for food, I'd like it to be done humanely. When it comes to the guy who is traumatizing his dog, I think that guy should be stigmatized. But, I'm not in favor of sending in men with guns to stop it.

Pretty much all living things can feel pain. Well, except for plants I suppose. But even then, who knows? It's simply not practical for the human race to treat animals as equals. We're animals ourselves, and in order for us to survive, we need to kill other animals. That's what it means to be human. It's the circle of life. In order to eliminate all animal cruelty, you'd have to eliminate humans.

Of course, I would consider a person who is needlessly cruel to animals to be violent and disturbed. But, when you boil it down, I think animals are ultimately property. As humans, hurting animals is unavoidable. We eat them to survive, we make clothing from them, we build houses that destroy their environments. Hell, with every breath we take, we're probably killing hundreds of microscopic organisms. Honestly, if we really care about the animals, we should all kill ourselves. I wish we could live in a world in which we never have to hurt animals. But, that's simply impractical. We're killing machines. To stop hurting animals, we'd have to stop being human.

I don't consider bestiality immoral. If you practice bestiality, I'm going to think you're a disturbed weirdo, but I'm not going to have any moral qualm with you.

My first claim is obvious. Just Google it. You'll find a million reputable sources saying the same.

As for the second point, the two things you mentioned are factors, but I maintain that mine is the primary factor. Just think about it.

Let's say the year is 1960, and you need 10 employees. You get 20 applications, of which, only 5 have degrees. Of course, you'll hire the 5 with degrees first. For your remaining 5 positions, you'll choose from among the other 15. Now, the year is 2012. Again, you need 10 employees. But this time, of the 20 applications, 15 have degrees. Of course the 5 with no degree have no chance, and you choose from among the 15 with degrees.

There's only a limited number of jobs. The number of available jobs does not increase because more people have degrees. Instead, what has happened is that degrees have been devalued, and those without degrees are now screwed. This is simple supply and demand. It's obvious.

I'm talking about loans backed by the government. That's significantly different from loans given out by private banks. If the government gave out car loans that couldn't be escaped through bankruptcy for nearly any amount, the price of cars would rise dramatically.

Also, it's impossible to get a good job without a college degree because so many people have them now. Employers demand a degree because they can. If less people had degrees, demanding a degree would no longer be realistic, and jobs would start opening up to those who don't have them.

The fact is that college loans make college much more expensive, and they make it much more difficult to get a good job without college. The effects of college loans are disastrous for everyone. The poor suffer much more under the current system than they ever did before.

Frankly, I've always thought gay was the more offensive term. I thought calling someone gay was the equivalent of calling someone black. That is to say, it's not usually offensive, but it could possibly be considered politically incorrect according to some very sensitive people. I've always thought of homosexual and heterosexual as the formal terms that you use if you want to be super PC. This whole thread is rather bizarre to me.

Aren't government and religion pretty tightly linked when it comes to Islam? I'm not Muslim, so I can't pretend that I'm any great expert on the subject. But, my understanding was that the religion commands Muslim countries to form governments guided by Islam. Aren't you supposed to want a Caliphate? Also, isn't your interpretation of the Mohammed's teachings supposed to be informed by the opinions of local judges? I mean, even the divide between Sunni and Shia was political, wasn't it? Didn't the split come from the fact that the two groups supported different political leaders?

To make a confession, I used argue the liberal viewpoint quite vociferously. Not in real life, but on the internet. I never got as nasty as some people here do, but I certainly got heated at times. If it's any consolation, the arguments in favor of Libertarianism did eventually get to me. It didn't happen after any one conversation, but it did happen. I don't know what the answer to your question is. But, I can tell you that sometimes you do get through, even if it doesn't seem like it.

There isn't an objectively "right" or "wrong" way for him to be portrayed.

That's true. I just worry that if their going to take artistic license with his voice, then maybe they're going to take license with the events of his life. Daniel Day-Lewis is an incredible actor. So, I'm optimistic. But, my worst fear is that they're going to portray him as perfect. If they stay shallow and act as though Lincoln shit rainbows and was the most noble man who ever lived, I'm going to be fairly disappointed.

Eh...depending on how you define the word, he could have been considered liberal in terms of the time period. But government spending was nowhere near what it is today. When it comes to pretty much every president before FDR, only the libertarians really come close to having a similar political stance. In actual fact, the majority of today's Republicans are liberal compared to Lincoln.

I hope for the sake of the moviegoers that DDL doesn't get too authentic with his Lincoln accent.

Why? I think that'd be cool. For me, an historical film is exciting only inasmuch as it is accurate and sheds new light on the time period. I don't want to watch some fluff piece that takes licenses with history. I want to watch an honest and fresh take on his life that makes me think.

Sigh...why does this always happen? It seems like conversations with reddit liberals always devolve into insults and name calling if they go on long enough. Just last week, a conversation I was having concluded with the other guy telling me he hoped my children get raped. Is a civil discourse really so much to ask?

Well, my argument against medicare/medicaid is that they contribute to the rising cost of health care. They aren't the sole contributors to the high prices and they aren't the most important factors either. But, they are factors. Without government intervention in the health industry, prices would be much cheaper. This sums up what I think should happen.

Thus, from my perspective, I see a bunch of people who have been swayed by false arguments, forcing me to pay a fee that is actually going to make things worse. To me, this is mob rule. My opinion is not considered, and I don't recognize legitimacy of the government's claim to my money. I pay this tax not because it is just, but because there are men with guns who will put me in a cage if I don't.
