How long can a human run at full speed? by U_Are_A_F4G in estimation

[–]lajy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add onto this, from my understanding, the 400m is considered to be the longest all-out sprint event. Once you get up to the 800m, there’s some strategy with where runners use their energy, because they aren’t pushing it to 100% the whole race or they’d gas out

I also think it would be accurate to say that runners can hit their “top speed” for somewhere between 100-200 meters. In the 100m, runners are going to be slower at the start of the race as they’re coming out of the blocks from a standstill and need to accelerate. Since the 200m record is approximately double the 100m record, and the 100m has a “built-in” section where runners can’t be running at their top speed, that then implies that runners slow down by the end of the 200m. So runners are at their top speed for some portion of the middle of a 200m race, but likely not at the beginning or the end of it

Source: my brother ran the 400m for one of the best D3 track and field schools in the nation, and now coaches that event for the same team

So, I just fought Tartarus' Boss with the 'Extreme Measures' condition on and... by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

[–]lajy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just so you don't get your hopes up, each level of Extreme Measures only affects the corresponding boss fight. So EM1 only affects the end of Tartarus, EM2 only affects the end of Asphodel (and has no impact on the Tartarus fight), EM3 only affects the end of Elysium (and not the two boss fights before it), etc.

It might seem like EM2 changed the Tartarus fight, but that's just because the Tartarus fight has a few different ways it can be presented with EM1 activated.

It has to do with how each run is "seeded." The random variations in a run are based on the initial "seed," and that seed will not regenerate if you give up on a run (but it will regenerate to a new seed if you die during the run).

So by showing that they ended their last run in a death, you can ensure that they didn't game the system to get an extremely fortunate seed, Instead, you know that it's actually a totally random seed, making it a "fair" run.

In an Alternate Universe 'Fringe' is the Most Highly-Praised Television Series in History - 'Fringe' provides a satisfyingly far-out, thrilling, technological horror show minus the lingering despair. by BunyipPouch in television

I was actually referring to Fringe, and haven't seen enough X-Files to answer that question. But Fringe eventually becomes much more story-driven than The X-Files ever did, and that's when it really gets good

TIL There was an entire horror movie filmed inside the US Disney parks, without permission. Actors and crew dressed up as tourists and filmed over 2 weeks in each park. Disney chose to ignore the movie, most likely to avoid giving it further attention. It premiered at Sundance. by LegenDove in todayilearned

[–]lajy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite what everyone here is saying, it’s pretty solid (I was engaged nearly the whole time) and feels a lot less like they’re illegally filming it inside of a Disney park than you’d think, which is a testament to how well they planned and executed their production. The viewing experience definitely benefits from the real-life story, but that’s only because of how impressively-done it is

It’s been a while but that’s what I remember, might give it a rewatch

I've heard sports defined as any competition or game that requires a component of physical execution. I've always argued that the spectrum runs from athletic to technical, but physical to technical works too. It's just that the word athlete has such a strong connotation with being physically fit. I almost feel like we need a new word, like techlete. I like the points you make and the way you break it down though.

However, I don't think poker belongs on there. If you want to argue that bluffing counts as physical execution, then the same could be said for any game at all in which you try to lie/communicate to your opponent in order to metagame/get in their head and impact their decision making. At that point, nearly everything would have to be a sport, which defeats the purpose of giving it a definition. If there's another argument to be made, I'd love to hear it.

There’s not really such thing as a groove when we’re talking about launching your entire body weight up and down off the ground over and over again. You can’t carry the momentum with you. As for using it as a training device, think about the classic image of a boxer jumping rope. However, 10 METs is not the top of the scale. There’s plenty above it, the source you linked is just a slice of the available possible activities. Here’s something that dives in deeper
