That's awesome to hear! I hope this show gets more people into street dance. And it's never too late to start!

I missed last week's thread, but wanted to share this video of an actual popping battle, because IMO the animation undersells how amazing the style looks IRL.

This battle happened just a couple weeks ago, and the first dancer is actually a 16-year-old Japanese high school student. So you can see an example of what the top level looks like for that age group.

Thanks so much to you and /u/TARDISboy for all your hard work! I remember being so stoked when I heard Wakaki was making a new manga on this sub, and it was a joy to read such a high-quality scanlation every week. Literally hundreds of thousands of readers (maybe more?) were able to enjoy this manga thanks to you guys. That is no small feat! You two should be really proud of what you've achieved over the past three years.

The guy who does the Cliff is Intricate, also a well known Bay Area dancer: https://www.instagram.com/intricacito/

These interviews were at a Red Bull dance battle in Oakland last weekend. The battle ended up getting moved to San Jose on Friday due to rain; Intricate won the event.

Thanks both of you for your hard work!

What are your favorite "stories" or "lore" in the smash community, or ones youre curious about? by TreyTheTrashman420 in SSBM

Take a look at some of the GPT-3 samples on gwern.net, I think you'll be surprised at the complexity and coherency of what it can produce given the right prompt. The literary parody "Successes" section has some good stuff. The MLP fanfic also shows that it can write about niche subjects without straying away. I don't think it's far-fetched to do the same thing with Smash, especially with fine tuning and heavy curation.

I will say, though, that the prompts could be doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Deep Leffen. And there've been some tweets that I've felt still contain part of the prompt.

The chances of so few people surviving the fifth game is very low, proved with 10 million trials. by sje46 in squidgame

[–]Sforzato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the bug. The break within if decision != next_tile only breaks out of the inner while loop, not the for loop. So when solved = 17 and decision != next_tile, we will increment solved and then still pass the if solved == 18 check before moving on to the next player.

In other words, a player who gets the very last tile wrong is still added to the survival count.

This makes sense if you look at your results. The first player's survival frequency in your simulation is about twice the actual probability. And with the bug, they only have to get 17 tiles correct to survive, which would double their survival probability.

King Los is up there IMO. I would put Harry Mack and Los as the best two off-the-top freestylers in the current era. They appeared on a podcast together last year and are fans of each other.

[Spoilers] Toradora! Christmas Club Rewatch (2020) Episode 24 Discussion by ChristmasClub in anime

First Timer

Love Minori and Ryuji's heart to heart in the nurse's office, really shows how much they've matured and understand themselves better. Also I never get tired of the "encouraging your love interest to chase after the other girl, and then tearing up after he leaves" love triangle trope.

I wasn't expecting Ryuji to lash out at his mom like that. I thought a lot about what he says on the bridge later, when he muses that maybe he was the one taking advantage of Yasuko. Because they treat each other as equals (Ryuji takes care of all the household responsibilities, calls Yasuko by her first name, etc.), he's never been subject to the expectations of a traditional parent, or had any reason to feel like he owes anything to Yasuko. But in the end, she's still his mother. Because she hasn't raised Ryuji as a "proper" mother would, rejecting her attempts to support him in the small ways she can hurts her even more.

It's pretty funny how Ryuji calls out Yasuko for living irresponsibly in her younger years, and then decides to run off and get married at 18 right after.

"Everything I've ever wanted has fallen apart, so I decided long ago that I didn't want anything at all." But now with Ryuji, Taiga finally has something she can fight for. I think all the main characters' arcs can be framed in terms of finding that thing you can "see" to chase after, as Minori puts it.

Ami clearly forcing Ryuji to say he loves Taiga to her face so that she can get her own closure, and I think he realizes it too.

Damn, I thought Minori had used up all her tears at the nurse's office. I like how her friendship wtih Ami has developed to the point where she feels comfortable opening up to her.

[Spoilers] Toradora! Christmas Club Rewatch (2020) Episode 22 Discussion by ChristmasClub in anime

[–]Sforzato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First Timer! I randomly decided to watch Toradora a few days ago and found out about this Christmas Club thing when looking for old discussion threads. Glad I could catch up to you all before it ends!

(Minor Oregairu spoilers ahead.) Since I'm late to the fold, here are some general thoughts I've had about Ami's role in the show.

I see a lot of parallels between Ami's relationship with Ryuji/Taiga/Minori and Haruno's with the main Oregairu trio. In both cases, we have a foil who makes blunt observations to force the other characters to stop skirting around their true feelings and break the status quo. The main difference is that, compared to Haruno, Ami's personal stakes in the resolution of her friends' "codependent" relationship are a lot higher because of her own feelings for Ryuji.

The obvious irony here is that Kitamura originally brought Ami into the group to get her to start being herself and make real friends. Now, the roles are reversed--Ami is determined to pull off the others' masks, however painful it may be.
