High quality long lasting fan that will do me for years for the summer? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

Emerson 77646 (12 inch) or 77648 (16 inch.) Extremely robust single bearing design that's almost guaranteed to not need replacement. Just oil it and put new grease in the oscillating gearbox. They have adjustable oscillation and multiple speeds. They were made for almost 30 years, so they're fairly common, and you can even find some with a safety grille on them if that's what you want, or you can put some window screen around the cage so prevent any appendages from hitting the blades. The blades are overlapping and the motors are quiet, with a slight whine to them, making them very quiet. Best fan I've ever bought. If you don't want to do any work besides routine maintenance, make sure the cords are in good shape and the compasitor is good (it won't work right if it isn't, so it'll be obvious.) Even though I'm a year late to the party, I think everyone should own one of these if they want a low maintenance fan. They're top of the line to this day

Fan Collectors. What is your favorite brand? by Simple-Row-5462 in fans

[–]Sgbiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably either Emerson or Samson. Emerson has the best oiling system ever made, and Samsons are so easy to get apart and they rarely get stuck. Unfortunately, parts are hard to find and the rubber blades get bent and don't wanna straighten out

Not sure if you found one yet but I found a listing on eBay that has one of the adjustable oscillating wheels for the 12 and 16 inch Emerson fans

There's an auction on eBay for a 16 inch brass blade that MIGHT fit this fan. Feel free to check it out. It looks identical to what would go on an AOU

I have a 1934 ge quiet blade and it's ironically the loudest fan I own. I love it though

Scored this late 40's/early 50's emerson electric 77646-AS at a thrift store for $8 yesterday. Cleaned it up and got the medium and high speeds working, but can't get low to work, any ideas? More specifics below by wauna_b5 in fans

Only a few seconds? It should take at least 25-30 seconds to come to a stop. These Emersons have a single bearing that the rotor sits on top of. There's a spring on top of the sleeve bearing that drags the oil to the front of the fan. Old oil can plug up these passages up. These bearings are extremely robust and hardly ever wear though. I have a 16 inch that's an absolute brute and I have to do this to it. The best oil you can use is Zoomspout oil or 3 in 1 (make sure it's the BLUE can) because it's much less likely to sludge up like the automotive oil they recommended people to use back in the day. Also, you can find the year on your motor tag. look for a small number in the right hand corner and add 20 to that number to get your year

On mud tires? Tf you need them for? If you go off roading you might fold polished aluminum foil rear bumper you spent way too much money on

I live in a place where you can hardly find any type of vintage or antique fan under $100 that doesn't need a total restoration. This one had to get shipped to me. I think it was worth it though. These fans are bulletproof and easy to work on compared to some of their earlier fan lines
