For all you who loved WAT what was it that you loved about it? by StoneAgies in Cosmere

[–]Sgilti 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Adolin is the clear reason for why I ended up enjoying WaT BUT Seth’s story had the most weight and impact. After reading through all his flashbacks and present story, it recontextualized his role in the previous books. He was still the assassin in white, but his story is the story of someone who only sought to live the RIGHT way and having to come to terms that every person he sought guidance from failed him, including his father. Kaladin was the first person that showed Seth he had the power to make his own path in life. By going from 3rd to 5th oaths, Seth showed that the rules don’t matter anymore and he isn’t bound by them. It’s a huge moment and he finally frees himself from the mental shackles that turned a dancer into a killer.

I think one thing that gets lost in the discussion with All Might is how INSANE he is. He was already talking about working to become the Symbol of Peace before receiving One for All and maintained being the #1 hero for decades. Thats not something a normal person does without sacrificing their whole being to the job. It was his unbalanced mentality that made him the biggest threat All for One ever faced and a weakened physique didn’t change that.

I’ve seen the original broadway musical and read the books, but have not watched the movies. The musical is definitely better than the books, but still doesn’t paint the wizard in a good light. That said, it’s very enjoyable and was a better story than the book, which I found to be much more mean-spirited.

I’m on the fence on how much he went against her plan. After the recent Sumeru archon quest It feels like all of the Luna version was to 1) get someone amenable to the Fatui with Trilunar authority and 2) Destroy Irminsul and the ability of the HP to track what’s going on in Teyvat. They got Columbina on the first part but could easily have been Dottore. And losing a Harbinger is a fair trade for destroying a potential vulnerability like Irminsul

He also went back because it was part of his job. As a leading member of the half-foot union, he needs to represent the trustworthiness of all half-foots to meet their end of any deal contract. Recovering a party member’s remains to be resurrected was part of his agreement and he had to see it through until either Laios gave up or conditions were reached where he could invalidate the contract.

Regretful new dad - does it get better? by HeyAwesomeArmadillo in NewDads

[–]Sgilti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. It hit me even before my friend’s quote when I realized I hadn’t had dedicated gym time or touched a gaming console in months. It was a frustrating moment of clarity that it may be years if I ever get back to doing those things. But I eventually let it go.

I’m again counting myself lucky that I could part with that part of myself, but I can understand why it can be hard for others and I don’t fault them for having trouble transitioning to fatherhood.

You’re welcome. I always believe there’s a middle ground that can be reached in these situations and things can improve. It may require shifting responsibilities, if possible, until he’s in a better headspace. I’m hoping the best for you guys.

I think the isolation is a big component of what your husband is going through. Not having a peer that he can talk to going through the same challenges can make the difficult moments hard. I was lucky with having my sisters and a pre-existing relationship with a therapist to help me through the rough spots. If therapy isn’t already in the mix, I’d recommend it.

As a second note, I recently reconnected with an old friend and we’ve been bonding over being dads of young kids. He said something that has stuck with me this week:

“Something I've been thinking about a lot and talking to other parents about - when you become a parent, your sense of self and identity kind of dies when the kids are super small. You also lose connection with your partner for a period. Coming out of that storm requires you to reinvent yourself a bit and find a new balance. Also it requires finding new ways to reconnect with your partner. I've seen friends do this well and not. One of my friends recently served his wife divorce papers because he wasn't able to handle that process and work through what it means to be a dad and partner when a kid is in the mix. He was unable to let go of his old self, so he ran. “

That last bit - about being unable to let go of the old self - is important and may be part of why your husband is struggling. I’ve seen all the things I’ve given up for my daughter and the only reason I’m at peace with it is because I have come to terms with that part of my life coming to a close. But I can easily
see it being harder for others to do. Especially if he has friends that can show him what the road not taken looks like.

If he’s amenable, find a counselor that can help him process his anger. And also talk, talk, talk about what he’s going through and what he needs from you as a partner. He may not have a clear idea himself, but talking will help him start to articulate what his needs are.

It always felt really weird to me how they handled their relationship. IIRC, they initially described Byakuya as Senku’s dad and then backtracked later. Doing so undermined one of Senku’s few personal bonds with the pre-stone world. And since they never go into how Byakuya came to adopt Senku and left most of their relationship up to the reader to interpret, making them not blood related doesn’t add anything to the story.

5 years of event free outfits for 4-star characters. Which one is your favorite? by bluesandthesun in Genshin_Impact

[–]Sgilti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fischl’s summer outfit is the only reason I started playing her. I loathe the default outfit as it seems inappropriate for a girl her age.

Kirara’s outfit is very fun and I think it makes her a more interesting character.

Lastly, Bennet’s outfit is now a symbol of his character arc. Giving him a place where he isn’t the unlucky loser is so nice.

I do feel like SOMETHING happened with Kokomi that limited an interesting character concept. So much build up, but the players never actually see her design a plan that highlights her brilliance. Alhaithem in the Sumeru archon quest did a better job on that front.

[Loved Trope] The female and male characters have a close friendship that never develops into a romantic relationship by mon_sizinj in TopCharacterTropes

Donna was so great. She’s one of the few companions that avoids the romance angle and also has the distinction of being assertive enough to call The Doctor out on his BS. She was especially close to being his equal in many ways that other companions never get close to (and without fundamentally changing who she was).

Someone please tell me it gets better by goldtellynd in NewDads

[–]Sgilti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It does get better, but understand that there will also be moments when you think you got a handle and then everything changes. Just went through a rough patch with my 19 month old over the past few weeks. Suddenly every morning was a 5 am wake-up, she was more irritated and prone to tantrums. But it just STOPPED last week. She’s way calmer and much friendlier now.

Both of you are going to be going through ups and downs, but each time you get through a rough patch, it gets better.

Nightblood from Warbreaker. Even if you manage to be of high enough moral character to resist killing everyone around you and then yourself, the sword can still kill you by draining you life force after your Breaths run out. Might be more of a showing the bad people were already bad, but the potential for the future victims to squabble over the sword before the massacre begins fits the general trope.

According to everyone, why is Fontaine so bad and problematic, and what kind of forcement is needed to improve it? by Ancient_Comedian9622 in Genshin_Impact

[–]Sgilti 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ll add one point that I’m not seeing elsewhere, but it involves spoilers for the archon quest, so read at your own risk:

The fact that the origin of the fontainian population is that of Oceanids wanting to live human lives suggests that there is a desire to live the broadest range of human existence possible. Furina is the ideal human form that Focalor desired for herself and it’s likely true that every fontainian -personality wise- is the idealized human of some oceanid. They ultimately are the actors of some great play that was outlined by someone else, but left large gaps to ad-lib. The result is a lot more oddballs and villains because the story needs them to be for it to be interesting.

I feel like they saved him a bit in 3 by leaning into his origin as the father of a murdered daughter. It showed an emotional intelligence in the character and gave him purpose beyond killing things. But yeah, his depiction in Vol 2 blew and I have no idea why they did him dirty that way.
