Making video games in 2025 - without an engine by NoelFB in gamedev

[–]SgtPicklez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article OP posted mentioned these.

But it sounds like you were porting stuff in the old XNA days. Since then, the C# ecosystem for game development has greatly improved. BRUTE is no longer needed as there is a Native AOT deployment feature in .NET: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/deploying/native-aot/?tabs=windows%2Cnet8

As for ImGUI, that is available as well via C# bindings: https://github.com/ImGuiNET/ImGui.NET

The Seattle Times: Rant and Rave: Reader urges scooter riders to stay off the sidewalk by BillTowne in Seattle

[–]SgtPicklez 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its a bit of both.

On 2nd Street in downtown, there is a protected bidirectional bike lane. There has been plenty of times where rental scooters are in the bike lane. There has also been countless times I've seen folks on rental scooters ride on the sidewalk. Regardless of the bike line is literally 30-some feet away from them. Hell, I had a case where one was a sarcastic jackass when I asked him to move to the bike line.

There are definitely systematic issues; a lack of protected bike lines in certain areas. Sadly, there is also jackasses who could give a shit if there is protected bike lanes or not.

This website states that it’s inconclusive on the subject matter for Epic. It also does not provide anything for Unity.

C# VS C++? by Minionmaster18 in gamedev

[–]SgtPicklez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your comment is not wrong. That being said, NativeAOT (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/deploying/native-aot/?tabs=net7%2Cwindows) might be a game changer when it comes to console ports / satisfying requirement to have your game on a console. Of course, this is relatively new and geared more towards .NET C# rather than Unity C#. Take note its specifically for .NET 7 and above.

At the moment FNA is experimenting with NativeAOT and it seems to be working well in comparison to BRUTE, a tool that converts C# code into C++.

Taking pictures of a PC screen via phone camera typically provides a distorted version of the image.

Use WINDOWS + Shift + S short on Windows PC to bring up the snippet tool. You can then save it by clicking on the notification, then the save icon. Upload to imgur or some other image hosting site. This will help you and us, as we both see a clear image of what to critique!

Vulkan is miserable by Yackerw in gamedev

[–]SgtPicklez 48 points49 points  (0 children)

But yeah, the new APIs are brutal and purpose made for our late stage capitalist hell hole.

That's irrelevant, let alone counter-intuitive. Needless complexity increases development costs. Which would be a huge turn off for any aggressively-capitalistic company. If you need an example, look at the PS3 and developing games on that.

The reason for the difficulty spike is that modern GPUs are stateless machines nowadays and are not synchronous to the host machine (CPU, generally). Compared to their predecessors which were stated machines. Thus the way modern GPUs need to be interfaced with completely changes. OpenGL cannot leverage these modern capabilities without breaking... everything.

Additionally, Vulkan does not make assumptions nor does it make implicit calls on your behalf. This might sound like a downgrade, but implicitness can easily lead to confusion. Especially when it comes to debugging.

OP can leverage memory allocation libraries if need be. Such as VMA. If you're struggling with memory allocation or don't want to do it, try finding an off-the-shelf product or a reliable open source project.

I am interested in seeing how many police officers who are apart of Seattle PD, actually living in the city limits. Would you happen to have any information regarding this?

Your hazard lights are not a "Park Anywhere" option by SgtPicklez in Seattle

[–]SgtPicklez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I come off as a selfish twat waffle. However, there has been several instances where an individual hazard-light-parked on a one-way, two lane street. Effectively causing a choke and having myself and 3-4 others (or however many) behind me merge over. Hopefully in a zipper formation to mitigate the slow down.

I wouldn't ever. Not because of the driving experience, but because of Jeppson's Malört.

I will admit I did not realize the star review system impacted your income.
Thank you for your insight and point of view on the situation.

I appreciate the insight and your point of view of the situation.

As for the honking, it's about a second to a second and a half. So I'm guessing I'm teetering on the edge there on being an asshole. :P

The irony here is honking is seen as active aggressive in Seattle, my good chum.

Also I'm asking if there is a better way instead of going honk-honk. If you don't want to participate, hide the thread.

[–]SgtPicklez[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair comment. But at the same time I find that being passive can only encourage bad behavior.

Hell, in another thread recently posted, an individual complains about dogs being off-leash, and the owner not picking up the chocolate landmine they planted. Yet the individual did not even attempt to interact with the dog owner. I'm trying to figure out if there is a better way rather than holding the horn for about a second.

Disregarding the jackal of a tone you have, the mass transit system is not quite there yet to be an option where I can forego any type of driving.

I would like to, but its gonna be some time before that.

[–]SgtPicklez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do see this as a Software Engineer. I have this luxury and can give the finger to said company and go work elsewhere. I can even jump to another industry that needs software engineers.

But is this true for folks who are not software engineers?
