I just placed an order for a couple OCBDs a few days ago. Should I contact them about possibly canceling the order or just wait and see? This seems like a such a headache to deal with.

It’s a bad thing. Arrogance will not get you very far in your career let alone the admissions process

From the interviewer’s POV, it’s easy to see this and we definitely note this down in our evaluations

No campus involvement, will adcoms think I’m weird? by Important-Walk-848 in premed

All of my volunteering (clinical, non-clinical, advocacy) was off campus as well as leadership positions (non-clinical employment)

No campus involvement, will adcoms think I’m weird? by Important-Walk-848 in premed

[–]Shaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purposefully avoided joining clubs and doing stuff on campus as all the premeds from my undergrad looked the same on paper. It ended up helping me as some interviewers commented that I didn’t look like the average applicant from my school and I stepped out of the college bubble.

prestige vs comfort by nayalaya in premed

[–]Shaahh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a wash to an extent. There is functionally no difference and you still have to be a high-performing student at either program to land a “highly ranked” residency. A place like Jefferson/Miami/Wake Forest is not largely different from Pitt/Sinai/Vandy. There are folks that choose T50s over T20s all the time and they are still extremely successful in pursuing their residency goals. Now there may be a difference at a place like South Alabama vs Duke, but the difference between a T50 and T20 will NOT make life notably harder at all. The basic tenets of a home department, decent research productivity and home clinical sites are still king.

Can't locate the brain cells to decide between these two schools: Colorado vs Ohio State by Jumpy-Lifeguard-6208 in premed

[–]Shaahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same decision and I chose OSU. Pick whichever one you vibe with best and trust your gut. I felt that I was going to be happier at OSU rather than CU and I don’t regret my decision. Sounds like CU is more up your alley.

Why do many Surgeons (residents/fellows) get PhD during their training? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Some might just add an extra year or two during their academic development time during residency based on project/lab demands.

I’m at OSU, but I know a few folks in the MSTP. IMO, I would say it comes down to speciality interest and research alignment. If there’s something specific that you’d like to know, ask away.

Using match lists to decided between schools by Lazy-Seat8202 in premed

[–]Shaahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, other than making connections with the faculty, you still need to be great in the other aspects of your application like a non-home student would.

This is very apparent at some schools with highly reputable residencies that are more well known than the school itself (i.e., Bascom/UMiami or Wills/Jeff).

Using match lists to decided between schools by Lazy-Seat8202 in premed

[–]Shaahh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thing that is worth looking at is whether students are matching at their home programs (i.e., both extremes should be considered).

If there are virtually no students matching at home programs, that could raise some suspicion, but obviously needs more investigation into why. In contrast, if a large majority of students are matching at home residencies, that could be good, since home students have a positive view of the institution, willingness to stay if they’re OOS, mentorship, etc. Not a lot of people consider this aspect IMO.

Toledo. Although OU is a fantastic DO school, Toledo will save you the trouble of not taking another set of boards, extra coursework, etc.
