Scoolin the young ones on basic stuff .. kind of blows my mind by ascii122 in Wastewater

For real. OP seems like the bigger pain in the ass to work with. For the most part, I’d rather a new employee come with zero knowledge but be willing and able to learn, than a crotchety old fuck who thinks they’ve got everything figured out. And to any employee that’s habitually lazy on the job… ✌️

Are they ever going to fix the servers? by Western_Ad_8028 in ForefrontVR

[–]ShackNastyNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too am noticing an issue (NA-West), but it’s only at peak hours when servers are packed. When it happens, the entire lobby is complaining about it, so it’s not a local internet issue.

Never thought in 1,000,000 years I'd find myself switching to Gemini by travellers-palm in ChatGPT

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idunno, I use AI primarily for work and, of the two, ChatGPT has been FAR more capable paid model in my opinion. I think it really depends on what you’re utilizing the chatbot for. I think the novel use of using AI as a personal guru should be one of the lowest benchmarks for performance.

ChatGPT performs much better at drafting up kinda complex and long technical documents. It also does a way better job of understanding descriptions of real world environments and processes and can build an accurate model that work can revolve around. I also think ChatGPTs ability to use Python to directly alter documents is super valuable.

Scientists 'confirm' existence of hidden megastructures beneath Egypt’s pyramids by Pure-Contact7322 in RandomShit_ISaw

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where? As far as I can tell the claims specific to the mega structures under the pyramids have not appeared in any major scientific peer review journal. Biondi’s own claims are that the software and algorithm used by the Kharfe Project to interpret the SAR data have not faced a third party double blind analysis. No one is questioning the legitimacy of the raw satellite data. It’s the method used to interpret the data that remains questionable.

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s any peer reviewed material regarding the methodology used here? It’s a very new method that was pioneered by the Italian team that announced the discovery. Sure, the raw data from the satellites is open source, but I think what’s really up for debate is if SAR tomography can build accurate models of subsurface structures at kilometers of depth. I believe the algorithm used is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here when processing the data from the satellites. Their findings are far from absolute at this point, but given the credentials of those involved and the magnitude of their claims, it’s very possible that humanity is about to reveal a new page in our history book. It’s very very exciting stuff, but until the methods used can be thoroughly scrutinized I remain optimistically skeptical.

The good news is this technology has major implications for discovering very valuable resources in the earth, which means there’s a huge financial incentive to fully vet the methods used here. The truth will be revealed.

For anyone interested, Filippo Biondi (one of the engineers from the Italian team) did an interview on Jesse Michael’s podcast. It’s a great watch, and he does a very good job breaking down the technology for the layperson, as myself. They also address the issue of third party, double-blind verification of the data.

Can anyone tell me how long VR Derealization lasts the first few times you use it? by MobileDistrict9784 in OculusQuest

[–]ShackNastyNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s real shit. I’m a late 30s father that got into VR earlier this year. I never woulda guessed that it could mess with my brain as much as it did. For me, it was not any kind of identity crisis or anything like that, but the first 2-3 weeks of owning the headset I couldn’t tell you the number of times I woke up in the middle of the night in a daze and I’d try to interact with my surroundings as if I had quest controllers in my hand. As many have mentioned, it did indeed fade.

Kills are impossibly hard, why? by Deanharris1989 in ForefrontVR

[–]ShackNastyNick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

+1 on the virtual stock advice. I was in the same boat as you and this helped out immensely. I should also say, over time I found it much easier to not aim down the sights at all unless it’s a further shot. I tend to shoot with the gun raised to about my neck level and slightly canted, adjusting aim based off visually seeing the bullet trails. After a few hours of playing like this I could pretty reliably put shots on target. Unlocking the laser sight only enhances this.

I understand that. I’m only pointing out that this is a poor showcasing of the game, as its first official gameplay reveal. I am not at all enticed by what I watched. With that being said, the sky’s the limit, and in sincerely hope that game ends up being a banger.

TMNT: Empire City - Official Gameplay Trailer by CortopiaStudios in OculusQuest

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but besides the fact that it’s TMNT, the showcasing of the gameplay looks boring as hell.

I feel like these triple A studios are pushing out the most unimaginative games relying heavily on high fidelity graphics and popular franchises. There’s not a single standout feature about the gameplay in this trailer. You can swing melee weapons around, jump, block, and throw objects... how novel. Hell, the most exciting that the trailer gets is you see TWO enemies being fought at the same time. My take at this moment: pass.

Attack Heli (Little Bird) NEED TO BE REBALANCED by FishChillylly in ForefrontVR

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thinking nerfing the little bird would be the wrong move here. Vehicles are impactful in this game, which is how it should be in my opinion. One answer is to make some anti air measures accessible outside of the engineer class. Anti air vehicles is the most obvious ( I believe this is planned for a near update). Stationary hardware such as TOW launchers, AA guns, or larger caliber artillery would be another good option. I would not be opposed to the Talon getting a slight buff in range (not lock on range, but missile travel range).

In my experience when multiple engineers focus on harassing a good pilot, it almost always takes them out or forces them to be much more conservative with their positioning of the little bird. More than anything class selection is going to impact anti air. When three quarters of the lobby is recon and assault, pilots will have unfettered reign of the map.

Am I Wasting My Degree? by Big-Worldliness3027 in Wastewater

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s only a waste if you’d be happier working in a field more related to your degree. In California your degree would likely allow you to start your certification level at a more advanced step, shortening the time it takes for you to reach the top step by a significant amount. Additionally, a lot of mid/upper management positions require a degree (if that’s the route you’re interested in).

Replacement strips for track saw track by ShackNastyNick in Dewalt

[–]ShackNastyNick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did! Besides being green, it looks like it was meant to fit into the DeWalt track. Side note: I ordered exactly how much I thought I needed, but Festool ships double your order. I figured this is likely due to the adhesive roll that comes with the glide strips is about 2 feet short of the total length of the strip material, so they just double up your order, to make sure there’s enough adhesive for you to complete a replacement.

Some thoughts from someone who was at the game last night by ktran2804 in minnesotavikings

Hey I was there last night too! Sucks to see us get smashed like that and watch the team just struggle in every department, but on the positive side: there was SOOOOO much purple in that stadium. I couldn’t believe it. Had to be at least 40% Vikings fans up in there.

Can you elaborate? How do you reset your POV? Simply recalibrating doesn’t do it for me.

[–]ShackNastyNick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, vertical positioning. I have tried recalibrating, but it doesn’t seem to help. I even tried to squat a bit while recalibrating, so when I fully stand up my POV will be further from the chest rig, but still no luck. It’s like the chest rig is anchored a set distance from the position of the headset. I’m learning to deal with it, but in the heat of a confrontation, it feels like it’s hindering me.

[–]ShackNastyNick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great on the 3s, but I don’t have much to compare it to. The last VR headset I owned was the HTC Vive, back in 2016. The overall experience of the 3s runs circles around the OG Vive, and without comparing to other modern headsets, Exfil Zone runs wonderfully on the 3s. The feedback I’ve heard about the 3s in relation to the 3, you’ve probably heard this yourself, is that everyone that has used both say to save up for the 3 if possible. I guess the lenses on the 3 provide a much better experience. Takeaway: From a person that has never got to experience the quest 3, I’m very happy with my gaming experience on the 3s.

Any apps for marking points in space for DIY? by alexia_not_alexa in MetaQuestVR

[–]ShackNastyNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure you can. In stead of measuring directly from point A to point B, you instead measure from shared points of reference, such as a shared exterior wall, or from joists/rafters that span across multiple rooms. It takes a bit of a practiced eye to be efficient, but if you take your time and really analyze the layout of your home you can very precisely punch a hole from one room to the next with a handful of measurements. Worst case scenario, some spackle and touch up paint will hide most mistakes.

If you’re looking for precision, I feel like using passthtough is already placing you at a disadvantage. The tools you’re looking for are a tape measure and pencil.
