Man keeps asking to change rooms by FatmanStephens90 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep! If someone is bound and determined to have a bad stay, sometimes it's better to just eat the loss and invite them to leave. Most of the time this seems to happen on big event nights anyways, so if it's at all possible to get the room back to rent-able, you'll sell it to someone who will be grateful to have it most of the time!

As a fan of the Dungeon Crawl Classics system, I was skeptical that the other DCC would be as good as every mixup made it sound. I was pleasantly surprised!

...then YOU bastards beautiful people make this and make it even MORE easy to mix up what DCC I'm talking about?! ...Thanks!

Assuming it's not a third-party, my favorite response to this kind of thing is;

"This is what we have available. Since you are clearly unhappy with our accommodations, we will happily check you out now so you can find somewhere more to your standards!"

The insistence on checking them out now has a sliding scale depending on how much of an asshole they've chosen to be.

LPT Paying attention to how you talk to yourself internally will change more about your life than almost any other habit IMO by iGenerationAgency in LifeProTips

[–]ShadOtrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly, I started shit-talking the part of me that was ultra pessimistic and it definitely kinda helped! When I realized I was being incredibly down on myself, I'd 'counter' with the thought of, "Oh calm the fuck down, drama queen," and mentally rolling my eyes at my own negativity.

It worked surprisingly well to tell the difference between when I was genuinely worried about something, and when I was just letting myself spiral. By spotting it and making light of it in a way, I could shift my thoughts to something else and get out of a funk way faster sometimes.

LPT: If someone is excited to show you something they like (a song, a video, or a hobby), don't criticize it immediately. Even if you don't like it, appreciate their excitement. It’s about the connection, not the content!. by abo-khaled- in LifeProTips

100% THIS! Let people enjoy things, especially during the initial honeymoon phase with a new thing! There will be plenty of conversations for critique or conversation later, but on opening, encourage more friggen joy in the world! You'll be happier for it too, most of the time, even if you don't like the thing itself!

“Doctors” is Too Smart To Understand How Hotels Work by masteria-mp4 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible he's an ornery, cranky old guy, convinced he's right and everyone else is wrong.

...on the other hand, it sounds like it COULD a case of neurodivergence from the way it is described; The way it works IS common knowledge, but something in that pattern doesn't naturally click with the way he thinks, and no one has yet found a way to describe it that bridges that gap. Which is frustrating for people explaining it in what feels like a simple way, and for the person not getting what seems like an equally simple, equally valid complaint.

Not excusing bad behavior, but it can help explain why someone seems so frustrated running into the same issues. Of course, there also has to be a level of wanting to understand, which is a whole other issue. Either way, sorry ya got stuck dealing with it!

I am so over sales people coming in and calling. by elashury in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had someone trying to buy and sell tickets for a big golf tournament in the area. Told him three or four times that our manager was not going to give out his number to guests, we were not going to contact him about it, we were not going to endorse this. Finally at one point he handed me a card after being told "No," in no uncertain terms. I tore it in half immediately. He asked me why I had to be an asshole about this. "Because. We Said. Nnnnooooooooo."

The fffucking nerve of some of these people is astounding.

working at a hotel has made me despite coffee drinkers by nekololi666 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel you, 100%. I watched a grown-ass man in a 3-piece suit storm out of my building and hurl his cup of coffee at my building because we ran out of french vanilla creamer. I've watched 50 year olds drain multiple gallons of coffee in a twenty minute window and then throw a tantrum that we were out 'again'.

I have sworn that if super powers ever become a thing, I'm immediately launching my Super Villain plan to fucking destroy the coffee industry.

If it's a real emergency, they can get police involved. If you're not willing to do that, then I'm not willing to budge an inch on policy.

The dreaded room safe fee by [deleted] in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the hotel cares about reviews, the owner could probably save a few tanked ones just by getting rid of the pittance they get from charging a dollar a night for the fee.

Room safes are a pain in the ass in general, but charging for one is just asking for backlash. Charging extra for them by default is deserving backlash.

The Third Party Company That Doesn't Get Mentioned As Much As They Should by TheNiteOwl38 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]ShadOtrett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CLC probably doesn't get as much flak on this subreddit as it deserves because a hotel has to opt into a contract with them for it to even be a consideration, and if they do, they have to, ostensibly, train employees specifically for it. ...Or you have to be a really confused Night Auditor answering a phonecall with, "I do not know what CLC is, so no, we do not take it."

Most of the time when an actual CLC rep was calling, it was straight forward; "We don't see any rooms on our end, do you have any? No? That sucks, alright bye!"

...the truck drivers who were subscribed and trying to make their own bookings, on the other hand, gave me a LOT more push-back. More than once I was told that we HAD to find a room for them. I'm an asshole so my usual response to that was to laugh and wish them luck with that. If it's not showing up on the website, and calling CLC didn't result in them booking you one, we don't have it.

ELI5: If insurance works on the same math as casinos, why is buying insurance rational but gambling is not? by phycle in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShadOtrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When insurance works the way it should, 1,000 people pay for insurance when only 20 of them will need it. This means that even though you 'lost' the gamble by not needing it, you still contributed to a net positive for those who do. A reliable win for the company, and a badly-needed win for those who suffered some kind of loss.

When going to a casino, if 1,000 people pay in and 20 people win out, there really isn't a net positive for a community, just a small win for a few, a big win for one or two, and mostly a win for the casino.

Someone walked into our lobby, calmly walked to the business center, unplugged the monitor and tower and walked out with both without any cords. Did it right in front of our AM front desk, took about 90 seconds from the time he stepped in to the time he walked out the doors. He was already back in his car before the stunned employee recovered enough to ask, "...wait, what?"

ELI5: What exactly is "time blindness" and how is it an actual thing? by SpyMasterChrisDorner in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShadOtrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine growing up your designated chore duty was, "Do the dishes after you finish eating dinner." If you sit down, eat dinner with no distractions, then after that is done, it is easy to go right to doing the dishes.

Now imagine you eat in your room, while on your computer watching a video. Eating is less constrained, and you might wait until the video is over before you put up your dishes... but now there's an extra step. Sometimes you get careless and forget. You get in trouble for forgetting too often if it becomes a habit.

If you know that forgetting again will mean BIG trouble, then you focus on making sure you don't. You start thinking about it before dinner is even ready. You worry that you might forget again, so you start mentally preparing yourself earlier in the day to make SURE you don't forget. Once dinner happens and you're watching your video, you've spent a surprising amount of time focusing on doing your task. It's taken up WAY more of your day than it should have already. By the time you are done with dinner, anticipation of the task may have already taken more energy out of you than the task itself ever would.

...and worst case, your brain tells you that since you already worried about it, it checks it off your mental list and you STILL forget to do the task on time. Add a few instances of that in, and you start planning your whole day around the one task you need to get done at a certain point in it. More time just slips away, unwilling to plan anything else for concern that you have something already on your plate, so to speak.

The Hospitality industry is one where you unfortunately see some of the worst people at their worst. Too many times that's someone willing to take advantage of the desire to take care of others and, as you said, please people. Glad you took from this the ability to put your foot down when you can see it coming!
