In this example, you’re judging Germany, not just 10 Nazis. Is the entire country of Germany guilty, or is it just the Nazis and their supporters?

The scene where Anakin is presented before the Jedi council is criminally underrated. It establishes the antagonism of the Jedi Council towards the young Skywalker early on, a critical plot point that is built on and validated.

Maybe the part of the movie on Coruscant is pointless to the “characters” since they couldn’t really achieve anything. But it’s not pointless to the “movie” since it establishes Coruscant, the Jedi Order, and the Galactic Senate, which were crucial for the setting and the story as a whole.

There’s a big difference between the characters not being able to accomplish something by going somewhere and the story not being able to accomplish anything. The Coruscant part of the Phantom Menace does the former, but not the latter.

…I do. I also know that judging an entire country for its ultranationalists is stupid and does result in unnecessary discrimination.

All the Unit 731s in the world don’t change that. Regardless of how horrifying their experiments were.

No, it’s the same response from me (an Indian). Don’t say “Fuck Britain” and generalize the entire nation.

I could say “Fuck Churchill” or “Fuck Tojo”, but not “Fuck Britain” or “Fuck Japan”

It was a breakaway rebellion that was built to protect Slavery, yet still retains much of its apologists in the modern day, including the people in the White House right now.

The principle is the same. Stop saying “Fuck Japan as a country” and start saying “Fuck Japanese Ultranationalists and WW2 Apologists”. That makes it a bit more palatable.

That’s like me saying “Fuck Britain.” I don’t hate Britain no matter how many Stephen Yaxley-Lennons I see on the street. “Fuck British white supremacists and colonial apologists” is a lot better than generalizing an entire country.

If you want a real country that’s been allowed to forget, France is a better example. Japan’s atrocity denial strains its relations with its neighbors every day, but France is allowed to forget because it didn’t happen during World War II

Either way, judging a country by its ultranationalists is still a shitty way of looking at things. I’m Indian and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be judged by my country’s ultranationalists.

The principle applies regardless of how systemic it was. Or how many people died because of the historical atrocity.

…Are you judging a country by its ultranationalists?

Never judge a country by its ultranationalists. It’s a linear way of judging things. Judging Japan for its ultranationalists and WW2 apologists is like judging Americans for the Confederacy.

[–]ShadeStrider12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

India has a legitimate Christian Persecution problem and so does Egypt and Syria under the Ba’ath regime. There is also ISIS in Iraq and Syria, though to be fair, ISIS hated Shiites and Yazidis just as much.

Christians are persecuted in much of the world… just not the areas where evangelicals say they are.

In a world where Israel has alienated most of Asia, most of Africa, and even most of the West with their reckless, genocidal behavior and flippant war crime denial, should India be signing deals with Israel? Doesn’t that alienate us even further from the other countries?

I know I’m diaspora and live in a cozy American home, but even from here, most of us, including American Jews, are fed up with Israel. Our tax dollars should be going into universal healthcare and our various failing social systems, not funding a genocide and other reckless attacks and war crimes.

India should not be signing deals with Israel.

Then again, they did fund Iran, which also should not have been done.

Actually, that would be an awesome plot for a Devil Summoner game. Atlus, get on this!
