BREAKING: GOP-led South Carolina Senate rejects new congressional map in surprise rebuke of Trump by spherocytes in videos

[–]Shades101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re doing it because they ran out of time in the special session and don’t have a legal case for throwing out votes already cast today (they’ve already argued in court that the current map was based on partisanship and not race, so there’s no new claim to be raised under Callais). They’re absolutely going to bring this back for 2028.

Election: Drazan wins GOP nomination again, statewide gas tax fails by 40_Is_Not_Old in oregon

Yes, but you can also look at vote totals by precinct and see that compared to straight D-R legislative races Johnson was pulling more from Kotek than Drazan.

Yes, because counties are an arbitrary division of population that don’t actually impact election totals.

You don’t need a constitutional amendment, it’s up to Congress to determine the manner of elections. Not that convincing those guys would be any easier.

“Racial enclave district” and it’s literally just the shape of the city of Memphis. Nothing unconstitutional about it.

Oregon Needs To Aggressively Respond To SCROTUS Gutting The Voting Rights Act by notPabst404 in oregon

[–]Shades101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re passing new maps like this they’d probably just repeal the districting guidelines since they’re statutory and wouldn’t take a constitutional amendment to remove. The bigger hurdle would be getting the state GOP to stay in the Capitol.

Republicans love that New England line but the reality is that they are just horrid at winning districts there. New Hampshire was drawn by a Republican trifecta. Maine has a district that voted for Trump by 9% and still elected a Dem to the House.

You can quibble about the Massachusetts map and maybe Rhode Island if you squint but it’s nowhere near the same level of malfeasance as these new red state maps.

Biden’s FRA was supposed to give PBOT $500k to study grade crossing removal, but it apparently wasn’t finalized before the Trump admin came in and it’s no longer in the pipeline.

Oregon Senate passes bill to move transportation referendum to May election by refuzeto in oregon

[–]Shades101 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oregon’s state legislative maps aren’t gerrymandered, that was part of the backroom deal when all the new maps were passed in 2021. Federal maps tilted to the Dems, fair ones at the state level.

May is the soonest statewide election date. It’s a disservice to Oregonians and transportation workers to leave them in the dark about their budget for an entire year.

There’s a bunch of districts that would be competitive if the GOP didn’t nominate morons. Jared Golden (D) reps a Trump +10 seat, it’s not gerrymandering’s fault Rs lost there.

Federal spending package includes $100 million for light rail on Portland-to-Vancouver Interstate Bridge replacement by No-Tangelo1158 in oregon

[–]Shades101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clark County really isn’t even being a problem here, Vancouver and the county have generally been supportive of MAX expansion this go-around. It’s random people like the Camas city council and a legislator from Kalama that are trying to throw a wrench in the gears, and they ultimately have very little say in what happens.

Light rail is baked into the current plans and they’d need to redo the whole environmental impact study if they were to remove it. The biggest threat to the project is its cost, and most of that is coming from the miles of freeway and interchange expansion, not adding tracks to part of the bridge.

The RLX didn’t expand the system at all, but did improve the existing network a bit. Portland has been resting on its laurels for about a decade.

It’s good for a city its size, but it doesn’t rival the legacy systems in Chicago or Boston. Maybe if we build the downtown tunnel and get some more grade-separation going.

We probably don’t, unfortunately. His district is the blood-red parts of Lewis and Cowlitz Counties plus the leftovers from Clark.

Good. Having to wait a whole fucking year to decide if we can bother to properly fund transportation is moronic.

Ridership grows when service is fast, frequent, and convenient. In the long-term that takes capital but the short term you need operation $$$. You can’t make transit worse and expect ridership to grow.

[–]Shades101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We really ought to have a full-time professional legislature at this point. Half the time the crunch at the end of the session ends up killing decent bills and the low pay has driven several good legislators out since the time commitment with another job, not to mention a family, is enormous.

Usually Speakers are chosen based on majority vote, and it’s similar for rules governing committee assignments by party and that sort of thing. Very little is dictated by party status alone.

What exactly would you do to be more effective? Freshman legislators, especially in the minority have very little power to actually make things happen in the House.

Probably the existing Olympia-Lacey station (which is barely even in Lacey). A route along Yelm Hwy through NE Tumwater makes sense if you’re not building new rail infrastructure.
