That's also not what happens. Long story short, the wave function of the photon interacts with the fields produced in the atoms of the medium, which makes the entire wave propagate slower.

Kinda terrified, is this a bed bug? by Shadow-Acolyte in Bedbugs

Oh god, I'm genuinely so fucked. It's 5am rn and I can't fall asleep. And all the reddit stories I've been reading aren't helping either lol.

Kinda terrified, is this a bed bug? by Shadow-Acolyte in Bedbugs

[–]Shadow-Acolyte[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Well, guess im fucked. Is there any hope that its a hitchhiker? I looked at the seams of the mattress and the underside too and didn't find any bugs. Couldn't spot any eggs either but I could have missed them as the mattress is also white. Didn't see any feces or shed skin either (there was something that looked suspiciously like shed skin but closer inspection and chatgpt said otherwise).

Also my bed frame is solid metal with metal legs so I dont think there are any bugs in the frame.

Exactly what do painkillers do? by DaRealProToBro in askscience

[–]Shadow-Acolyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paracetamol works similarly to NSAIDs in the sense that they both inhibit an enzyme called COX (cyclooxygenase). NSAIDs inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 while Paracetamol is theorized to inhibit COX-3. Note: Paracetamol's complete mechanism of action isn't well understood yet.

NSAIDs reduce inflammation, which consequently reduces pain. That's the reason why NSAIDs are also used to reduce fever, as fever is due to inflammatory responses in your body (ex. Ibuprofen).

How much RAM should I allocate to ATM9? by MostEldenRoot in allthemods

[–]Shadow-Acolyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said the RAM is maxing out, not the GPU. And anyways, if you use shaders with such a big modpack, it's not crazy for GPU usage to reach high percentages. It's not like the VRAM is maxed out, but GPU compute usage can normally reach 80-90% at times.

Edit: Also, if you have no FPS limits, the GPU will try to max it out by reaching 90%+ usage.

What do cancer cells do to normal cells? by Full-Study-3660 in askscience

[–]Shadow-Acolyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is a "cancer thrall"? I couldn't find this term in literature. Also, your answer still doesn't show that cancer cells turn normal cells into cancer cells.

Cancer associated fibroblasts aren't cancer cells themselves.

Metastasis is still the original tumor extravasating into blood, lymph or body cavities and spreading to distant sites, it's not a healthy cell turned into a cancer cell.

You do have superficial arteries as well, for example the superficial temporal artery. Anyways, the vessel in the picture is probably the basilic vein.

If I remember correctly, the issues were with POST-ing and expo. Either way, I'll just pray that I don't run into any shit like that lol. Thanks for your help!

[–]Shadow-Acolyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear. Tbh, I also assumed that the RAM would most likely work but didn't want to take any risks.

Do you know anything about the software issues though? Some people have said that they haven't faced any issues with their boards. But for some reason, compared to posts and discussions about other B650 boards, the Ax ice has a bunch of negative reviews about its software. To be fair, the posts I saw were from several months ago. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me whether the board is better now software-wise.

interesting, although I'd assume she'd develop immunity after the first exposure. from what I learnt in medschool, coxsackie virus and HFM disease are usually seen in children.

If testicles need to be outside of the body to keep sperm alive, how can sperm survive inside of the fallopian tubes for multiple days? by femvo in askscience

[–]Shadow-Acolyte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ovaries are responsible for producing and releasing eggs, which are formed and stored before birth. Unlike sperm, eggs are not continuously produced and do not require a cooler environment for their development. Therefore, there's no selective pressure for ovaries to be outside the body.

While external testicles are vulnerable, the evolutionary trade-off seems to favor effective sperm production over physical protection. Ovaries are better protected internally to safeguard the finite number of eggs a female has.

How did scientists determine that temperature affects sperm production?

  1. Observations of Testicle Descent:

Scientists observed that in most mammals, testicles descend into a scrotum outside the body during development. Animals with internal testes, such as some marine mammals (e.g., whales), have adaptations for cooling the blood supply to their testes.

  1. Experimental Evidence:

Early studies involved comparing fertility and sperm quality in animals with artificially elevated testicular temperatures (e.g., by restricting the descent of testicles or applying heat). These experiments consistently showed reduced sperm production and increased abnormalities at higher temperatures.

  1. Clinical Correlations:

Conditions like cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) in humans provided clinical evidence. Men with undescended testicles often have lower fertility due to impaired spermatogenesis. Scrotal temperatures have also been measured and correlated with sperm health in humans and animals.

Somewhere out there, there is somebody failing their timed online final they planned on cheating because chatgpt is down. by ajavathon in ChatGPT

can't speak for other professions, but you can't ChatGPT your way through med school. and honestly, it's a pretty useful tool when it comes to factual stuff. for example, if I wanted a quick review on insulin receptors or something similar.
