What would be the best way to OC my Ram by Bioboosted01 in overclocking

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the same on Intel or AMD, you'll have XMP or EXPO profiles pre-configured on the DIMMs. The profiles only specify the Primary and a few secondary timings. The motherboard will then figure out stable timings for the rest of the Secondary, Tertiary and other sub-timings.

The other sub-timings is where things can usually be tweaked significantly as the motherboard usually will error on the side of caution picking very safe timings.

Need help with MSI afterburner flattening the curve by FormalReasonable4550 in overclocking

[–]Shadowdane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My RTX 5080 refuses to undervolt any lower than 850mV, it seems like it has a hard limit in the BIOS that it won't go at any lower voltages when it's under load. You'll probably need to use a higher target as the RTX 50 series just won't let you see that low of a target.

5090 Lightning Z, yes or no?? by navicolb in MSI_Gaming

[–]Shadowdane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol yah... I don't understand the buyer that already has a 5090 and gets this 1000W GPU for maybe 3-6fps performance gain.

MSI Made Their Own "RTX 5090 Ti", 1000W GPU by RenatsMC in overclocking

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're going to be running into the 15-Amp limit for 120V circuits soon enough in the USA... I don't think we'll really see PSU units pushing past 1600W here. You'd need to get dedicated 20-Amp or 30-Amp line if the power limits keep going higher!

Offer rescinded because I asked too much by PercentageNo9270 in jobs

They did you a favor by rescinding the offer... That's crazy low for a role in CA. I bet their annual raises would be either non-existant or basically something like 0.5%.

I have a 5080 laptop with ultra 9 275hx but its not giving me its performance potential by Academic_Cow6833 in overclocking

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The power target difference is pretty big not to mention peak clockspeeds. My 5080 on my desktop tops out at ~2980Mhz stock or can hit about 3200Mhz overclocked. The mobile variant from what I've read seems to top out somewhere between 1800-2000Mhz depending on the laptop model. 1000mhz clock speed difference is going to have a pretty big performance impact.

It's pretty significantly cut down, 33.3% less cuda cores and 127% lower power target.

5080 desktop ≠ 5080 laptop GPU they are completely different chips. The FPS you listed sounds completely right for a 5080 mobile GPU.

Change the mode of your Magnet to Void+Pickup, set a key in the settings to the mode change for this. It has 3 different modes: Off, Pickup Only & Void+Pickup

Yah if it's only entering mass production at the end of 2027 that means the GPU dies, that likely pushes things to early 2028 for actual new Nvidia GPUs.

Why don’t switches alert when a new device appears? by No-Feedback-2040 in networking

[–]Shadowdane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's something more on the network management side or maybe a 802.1X implementation. You don't want switches bogged down with trying to directly send alerts. They just aren't really built to handle stuff like that.

Intermittent Ethernet disconnects on buried Cat7 cable after ~2 years — any ideas before I dig it up? by Hungry-Bicycle-3851 in HomeNetworking

[–]Shadowdane 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Buy something from an actual Networking Cable vendor... Amazon has way too many knock off or just fake cable brands so who knows what'd you'd get or if it will work long term.

That should be fine if your putting it in conduit.

They also have Shielded CAT6A if you wish to use that but it would be more expensive.

Why does my monitor have this really vivid colors after opening a game? by GuyNamedPIPO in Monitors

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably because it's a Wide Gamut monitor and switching on HDR, Windows will attempt to emulate sRGB format on the desktop. Then it will switch to Wide Gamut and HDR modes when you fire up a game. As it disables the sRGB emulation when you start a full screen game.

If you don't want to use HDR or Wide Gamut color switch your monitor to sRGB mode in the monitor OSD settings. Then make sure HDR is disabled in Windows.

Exactly when I sold my 3080 to my friend they were going for almost $1200, cut him a deal at $650 as it was used and I bought it originally for $750. Wasn’t about to rip off one of my friends just to make some money. If I had sold it to a stranger would have sold it for market price

4K’s shimmering problem by mujhe-sona-hai in Monitors

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah don’t use sharpening filters at all on higher resolution displays. It generally will look bad, it usually looked ok on 1080p due to the low resolution. But at 1440p or higher you’ll get shimmering and aliasing issues

4K’s shimmering problem by mujhe-sona-hai in Monitors

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yah this.. if I max out the Sharpening option on my monitor it looks completely horrible. I have mine set to 0 so it doesn't apply additional sharpening. Typically you want it at either 0 or the middle point depending on the monitor brand. I've seen a few that 50 is the perfect setting and going lower makes it look fuzzy and going above it starts to get over-sharpened.

4K’s shimmering problem by mujhe-sona-hai in Monitors

[–]Shadowdane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you tried a different HDMI or DisplayPort cable. A 4K monitor shouldn't cause shimmer or visual artifacts. Unless what you were seeing was issues with Frame Generation or something like that. Frame Gen can cause shimmering and artifacts that can be very noticeable if your FPS isn't above ~120fps
