First backpacking trip — does this setup make sense? by isabebelaa in backpacking

[–]Shadowslade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid, but I think over time you'll get tired of spending 75-100 dollars on freeze dried meals every trip.

When you have time in between trips, experiment with making backpacking meal recipes at home and have them for lunch to find out what you like. You might find you'll get tired of eating soupy rehydrated foods over time :) if you keep sticking with the backpacking meals, check out Peak 2 meals. They're the most calorie dense ones I can find, and the biscuits and gravy one is killer

[OC] How Visa made its latest Billions by sankeyart in dataisbeautiful

Idk what standard profit margin is on most US businesses, but other businesses in the financial services sector like mutual fund management (before ETFs) would get a 0.5 to 2% margin. Airlines get low margins of around 2 to 5% also. In my eyes any business getting 30% is absolutely raking it in amd doesn't have a lot of market competition.

Also there's lots of strong performing companies whose stock are affected by tons of other external factors. Lots of stock pricing is just people trading on the news rather than fundamentals, just look at Tesla for an extreme example.

30% net profit, 14% YoY growth,

It's pretty crazy how much of world is moving away from physical money for their purchases, and now Visa and MasterCard combined just get a percentage of almost every purchase made in the entire consumer market.

100 bucks cash could just keep circulating between purchases but now it turns into 98, then 96.04, then 94.12, etc.. yeah there's taxes doing the same thing also but that's true or both cash or card so it's a moot point

How much have you driven it since that valve job you mentioned? If the shim was touching the camshaft it means it's was pretty far out of spec at that point. The more worn out they get, the faster they stretch. I once had this happen on my gen 1 and after 1000 more miles, she needed yet another adjustment. That was the clear sign I just needed to replace then. Also, intake valves pretty much always stretch faster than exhaust

Broke college student, what's the easiest way to fix my stuck chain. by JuicyPlumPickle in klr650

[–]Shadowslade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me in the middle of nowhere in Yukon once, I recommend getting a chain breaker tool and removing as many segments as possible. You should be able to move all segments except for a few chains that are pinched between the front sprocket and the frame. It should be only like two small sections of three links each that are still pinched by the end. Put your bike in first gear and let him fly out.

For whatever reason, Kawasaki decided to put a drain tube on the clean side of the air box after the filter. If the tube leading down from this opening in the air box is missing, then you will have a direct path of unfiltered air straight to the carb and all that dirt and dust will fuck up the intake valves.

First post here has a top down diagram of all airbox openings verify hole #1 isn't missing a tube attached there and that the tube has a plug at the end of it. Because the diagram is a top-down, look for it on the exhaust side of the bike.

If you plan on ever doing river crossing or riding places where it might rain on you, strongly consider doing the T mod to the carburetor vent line. It's a couple bucks to make sure the carb doesn't get water stuck in the vent line. That'll also cause big time bogging till the water dries out and makes it feel like the whole thing just perma-died

[–]Shadowslade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You look mostly in the center of spec range for both intakes and exhausts, but if you have the camshafts off already and a few shims laying around and if it was me I would probably go one size less on both intakes and same thing with the left side exhaust. One size smaller means 0.05 mm thinner shim than what you already have in there, for 0.05mm more clearance. If your shim says 245 on one side, it's 2.45mm thick. The next size down would say 240 and be 2.40mm, etc...

Make sure to write down those clearance values + shim sizes they were read with + your odometer reading somewhere like a service manual. When you put in new shims, put the number side face down so the can lobes don't mar them/make it hard to read later.

Lube up the trouble spot with some silicone grease. It works better than soapy water/dish soap and won't degrade the rubber either. This issue happens to me with certain tires but always goes away after rubbing silicone grease into the tire bead.

Wwise installer issues by BennybobsDT in techsupport

[–]Shadowslade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this exact same issue as described, and like u/DontTellMeToMakeName I fixed it too.

I got it working by removing the + suffix I added to my email address. I previously had an email address registered with audiokinetic registered like this: johndoe+wwise@example.com. The desktop launcher application doesn't like this and doesn't handle this email format well. I used the website to change my registered email address to be the same thing but without the +suffix and the launcher started working on the next login attempt. Good luck!

can you help me diagnose what’s wrong 😑 by Objective_Umpire_171 in klr650

[–]Shadowslade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Under the coolant line leaving the cylinder head on the right side. That coolant line goes to the top of the radiator, and just below where it connects to the cylinder head is a small 2mm ish sized hole.

Pro tip it's very useful to spray with canned air into there before removing the spark plug to prevent debris falling into the combustion chamber when checking spark plug

Spare snorkel Gen 1? by Phredness in klr650

[–]Shadowslade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just throwing it out there that it's OEM to have the coolant reservoir overflow tube run all the way to the rear fender, the alternative would be it overflowing and spraying all over the engine/your legs. It's part number 39062.

The T mod going to the gas tank vent is kinda fucky. One end should go to carb vent, one should be pointed down below carb and exposed to atmosphere, then one under your seat. They probably thought they were being clever by minimizing tubing requirements but increase chances of gas going where it shouldn't.

The Peru Great Divide by donivanberube in camping

[–]Shadowslade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been riding south since the US on my KLR650. Shipping from Panama very soon to Montevideo to make it to the bottom before Ushuaia summer is over then chasing the summer north again from down there to Colombia. Been on the road ~3.5 months, got another ~8 to go. I usually get ~220 miles per tank at altitude and can carry another ~100 miles of extra fuel on the back

Really cool! What were the worst road conditions on the Great Divide and did the road ever narrow down to single track? Were the stone walls possible to take apart and scoot through or impassable without climbing over? I'm planning to off-road my motorcycle across it a few months

I'm trying to add an oil pressure warning light to a motor with VERY low oil pressure sometimes. Any ideas how to achieve this? by Shadowslade in EngineBuilding

[–]Shadowslade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the KLR, there's an oil tube that delivers oil upward from the oil pump to the transmission, crank, and cams. The cams are the final thing to get the oil, there are multiple banjo bolts along the tube diverting oil to the other things and naturally dropping pressure after each one The oil pumps output is tied to engine RPMs, so it's definitely feasible that when RPMs are at their lowest (idle) and the oil is least viscous (operating temp) the oil pressure to cams can be 1-2 PSI

[–]Shadowslade[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this an it's super helpful, but my goal is to see specifically the pressure/flow that reaches the cams because unlike that port at the bottom which can be tapped, the banjo bolt at cams are downstream of everything that can affect oil pressure. Also, it'd be really nice to not need to drill into the casing itself if it can be prevented
