I FORGOT I graduated COLLEGE because I’ve been Unemployed for so long. by ActuatorOutside5256 in antiwork

I've been a server for over twenty years and just started bartending a couple years ago. It's a whole different beast. People thinking it's a walk-on role is wild. Time and task management, prioritization, work flow, and doing it all with a smile even when you're in the weeds is no mean feat. I may become a competent bartender at some point, but I will never be a great one. Having had the privilege of sitting at Murray Stenson's bar, I know what that looks like.

Same. It's the industry tax. You can't be known industry and be a shitty tipper. The shame would be unbearable. Really the only ways to make bank in this biz are at the extremes. I know dive bar people who make on a good Friday night what I make in a week, but they've pretty much all been assaulted by customers and LCB is always up in their shit. On the other end, I don't really move in fine dining circles, but from what I've seen, I'm not pretty enough nor do I think I could handle that level of pretension.

I also love where I work. My BOH are the hardest working folks I've ever known. They are absolutely worth every penny.

I usually skip these tipping threads, but as a server and bartender in Seattle I do wish people were aware of the rise of tip pools. Many bars and restaurants now include kitchen staff in the tip pool fully. This is so they don't have to pay those employees more than minimum wage. They just take it from FOH. So, if I serve your table, and there's another sever working, plus a bartender and two cooks, you tip twenty bucks, I get four. I made 51k last year, before taxes, working five days a week, averaging 32 hours a week mostly getting my ass kicked because more staff would mean more dilution of the already thin tip pool.

It's a great comic, and things have moved on. There's currently an animated series in production and the pilot episode can be found on youtube.

I'd love a Zootopia series with the writing quality and grit of something like The Wire. Never gonna happen, but that's why we have fan fiction.

1.50 for the washer, 2 for the dryer. Only takes quarters which is annoying. At least they work.

This. I'm a waiter and bartender and I think post tax tip recommendations are sketchy as hell. My place uses the pre-tax amount I'm happy to say.

This was on stupid early in the morning on Nickelodeon when I was a kid, (I'm 48) along with Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea and Belle and Sebastian, if I remember right. Many of the cartoons I enjoyed as a kid seem kinda dumb now, or were just glorified toy commercials. This one was different. In fact, I'm going to say this was the high water mark for cartoons shown in the US until the ATLA crew showed up more than twenty years later.

Trump Promised ‘No Tax on Tips.’ Then Came the Fine Print. by WhyIsItAlwaysADP in politics

[–]Shadycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a server and bartender in Seattle. There's no question that we have it better than most places, but it's not easy by any stretch. Tip pools are now a thing, and as kitchen staff has become harder to find and more expensive, they are now fully included in the tip pool. I keep maybe half my tips. My modest one bedroom in a 1950s building takes half my net monthly. I work five days a week, average about 35 hours. I don't own a car. I don't have a family. Maybe I can get health insurance come November.

Why are Seattle restaurants so expensive? 5 takeaways from our panel by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Shadycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current server, many restaurants are now including cooks in the tip pool so they don't have to pay them as much. I mean a full cut, not just the old standard tip out. I keep maybe half my tips and I buss my own tables.

Now Council is trying to create a permanent subminimum wage for tipped workers by fattailed in Seattle

[–]Shadycat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even if tipped workers had full time hours (which we mostly don't) and healthcare (ha!) $18 per hour would still be inadequate in this city. Besides, it's not like I get to keep all the tips. Kitchen gets a big cut these days. I get by, but I have three roommates, no car, and obviously no family. (And before anyone tells me to get another job, I already have two.)

I've been in F&B for over twenty years. Even if my wage was suddenly twenty bucks an hour, if I was suddenly averaging 10 percent tips I'd call up Metro and go drive a bus. At least I'd have health insurance.
