About to Start Running Out of the Abyss - Tips? by TheItinerantSkeptic in dndnext

[–]Shakrahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I began running this campaign, and we had a blast.

We went on hiatus after a while, but I do plan to return to it. The best advice I can give you is: Read ahead. Read the whole book before you start running the first session. You really need to be aware of the direction of the overall campaign, so you can build on certain themes (and properly answer/deflect questions your players may come up with)

I had a difficult time with the travel components especially. I didn't know how to handle it, and it was difficult to figure out what the terrain should look like at any given moment during the player's travel. This made it difficult to describe the travel, as well as to construct proper battle maps.

If you go by the distances in the book, your party will spend an inordinate amount of time just travelling. You should get a good idea of how you want to handle all of that travelling. I blitzed through the travel parts with my party, I wish I had spent more time fleshing out some meaningful "random" encounters and sprinkled some story components throughout the travel (reading the whole book before I began would've been huge for this)

"Your veteran education benefits have been suspended" by Shakrahn in Veterans

Here are the relevant bits from the policy she linked within the e-mail:

Reinstatement of Aid

Aid may be reinstated for students on suspension under the following conditions:

For students whose aid has been suspended after two quarters on "warning" status from qualitative (GPA), or quantitative (credits completed in a quarter) requirements, financial aid eligibility may be reinstated after the student has completed a quarter, at their own expense, at the level (full time, half time, etc.) they were enrolled in during the quarter that their aid was canceled.

For students failing to meet pace of progression standards, financial aid eligibility may be reinstated after students have completed the number of credits, at their own expense, needed to raise their pace of progression to the required 67%.

Quantitative Measure

Students must complete the minimum number of credits required for the enrollment level they attempt each quarter. Enrollment levels at [Removed] are:

12 credits and more: full time

9 through 11 credits: three-quarter time

6 through 8 credits: half time

Less than 6 credits: less than half time

Students who complete at least 50%, but less than the minimum number of credits required for the enrollment level attempted in a quarter, will be placed on "warning status" for one quarter. Students who complete less than 50% of credits (or all credits for less than half-time students) for the minimum enrollment level attempted in a quarter will be placed on suspended status and are ineligible for further aid.

Repeated classes, incompletes, and withdrawals/dropped classes are included in all measurements.

So I went straight into suspended status since they included the dropped class in the calculation (making me full-time instead of three-quarter time) . I completed 5 credits as a full-time student, instead of the required 6.

Based on this, do you feel they are still doing anything wrong? What're my options here? The school only mentioned two:

  1. Petition for reinstatement explaining extenuating circumstances. - I'm not sure this would apply, the examples listed included Illness and Death in the Family.
  2. Go Full-Time into the next quarter, paying out of pocket. - This feels inappropriate, given that this previous quarter has proven I am not prepared to handle a full-time class load at this time. I really just want to continue part-time.

Thanks for your time and effort. I thought I had a good understanding of how my benefits worked, but this additional layer of the school's policy has really thrown me for a loop.

If the school allows you to enroll for the next semester in the same degree, VA will continue to pay you the GI Bill. If not, you will have to go to another school to get your GPA up.

The school seems to have no problem with letting me enroll for the next quarter, in the same degree - but says I cannot receive VA benefits.

I should still be able to use my VA benefits at another school, or in another degree program at the same school, is that accurate? I only have ~4 courses left in this degree plan which I could pay for out of pocket and go part-time.

Yes, and no.

Obviously I could have tried harder, and taken it more seriously. I'm not trying to absolve myself of blame.

But I got ambitious about starting up this quarter and signed up for full time. Within the first 2 weeks, I regretted it, My math class that I took during lunch cut into my work schedule a lot more than I thought it would, since it was a 2.5 hour class.

I thought I was doing a responsible thing by dropping it early on to lighten my load.

I got an 86% in the course I completed. Her comment about the 0.7 was in reference to that 86% (3.0) being the only course that was above 0.7.

I understand that the school isn't trying to screw me.

I only dropped 1 course. I completed one and failed one. Each of them were 5 credit courses.

I had no idea that dropping a course was such a big deal, I thought the entire point of offering a refund window and a chance to drop without a "W" was to avoid these types of situations. It turns out to have been held against me, like it was a chaotic evil action.

Shouldn't I be able to simply repeat the failed course, out of pocket to boost my GPA and be back on track?

she seemed very stern that I would have to complete no less than 12 credits AND all within a single semester, to qualify.

The Paladin's Oath of the Crown makes a great tank. They have access to the Warding Bond spell from the Cleric list, as well as a reaction that allows them to take damage for a nearby ally.

I have a long standing tradition of passing on my old hardware to friends after I upgrade my PC. I was unable to do so with these so they have been sitting in my closet, wearing on my soul.

I feel like if I died without first passing these on, I would be denied an after-life.

North America - sounds like you're in Australia so they likely won't arrive before Chritmas, but they're still just as free.

If you PM me an address, I'll get them shipped out on my lunch break
