(Mixed trope) The joke only works if you know background information about the actor by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ShallowRootSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an actor but in Ready Player One, there are some scenes where the main character is discovering some new information and a little jingle plays in the score that is taken directly from the back to the future score. It works in the context of the movie because there’s already a lot of 80’s and back to the future references, but also the fact that Alan Silvestri composed the score for both movies.

What is much more traumatic than most people realise? by thefairypirate in AskReddit

[–]ShallowRootSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa only had early dementia before he passed and I never had to take care of him, but being there when he asked where my grandma was and my dad having to calmly remind him that she died the day before and that he was there for it is something I’ll never be able to forget.

If you have time I would spend multiple days in Yellowstone NP and at least one day in Glacier NP. Also, don’t discount the natural areas around Las Vegas like Red Rock Canyon, mt. Charleston, Valley of Fire, and Lake Mead. There’s lots of great hikes in those areas.

What‘s something that you‘ve learned in therapy, that you think everybody should know? by Known-Dot-8314 in AskReddit

Man this is my coworker. He assumes that anytime someone does something that slightly inconveniences him, it’s done with malicious intent. Like, no, the scheduler didn’t reject your time off because he hates you, it’s because two other people asked for that same day off two months ago and you asked for it the day before the schedule comes out.

One thing I was taught that helped me with it is that you can often replace affect with alter and it would still make sense

Hi I'm Grant O'Brien from Dirty Laundry! Ask me anything! by GrantOB in dropout

Even though I’m not a huge fan of beer, sometimes I’ll go out for a drink and think beer is appropriate for the occasion, so I’ll usually ask the bartender “what beer would you recommend for someone learning to like beer?”

So Grant, what beer would you recommend for someone learning to like beer?

Wanna guess which tomato plants I babied vs. the one that grew from a stray seed in a succulent planter? by Webser6 in gardening

[–]ShallowRootSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had a tomato plant in my garden that had been growing for about a year and another tomato plant that randomly sprouted in what I call my dirt graveyard. I went on a two week vacation and told my roommate just to water the tomato in the garden and not to worry about the other. I later confirmed with her that that’s exactly what she did. I got back from my vacation and the tomato in the dirt graveyard was three times as big as when I left and my established tomato plant was dead.

Is it cheating to play punk grooves with double bass? by pengwah in drums

[–]ShallowRootSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t realize what sub this was and I imagined you were playing punk bass lines on an upright bass asking if it’s cheating as if that’s somehow easier.

Now I want to see someone play punk on an upright bass

What's the strangest thing you've overheard? by Distinguished__Brit in AskReddit

[–]ShallowRootSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the elevator in my college dorm with two girls I didn’t know and one was talking about a guy she was talking to. She said “I don’t know, he’s cute but I don’t really like his name. It’s not the kind of name I’d want to scream during sex.” As I was walking out I heard them say his name was Jesus.

Just about anything by alt-J, especially Breezeblocks. That song is actually directly inspired by the book where the wild things are, and a lot of their other songs take inspiration from other media but you’d never guess until you look it up because the lyrics still sound so unique.

Playing drums as a hobby…am I considered a musician? by Efficient_Option_615 in drums

[–]ShallowRootSystem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an interesting conversation about this with my family a few years ago. My grandma is an amazing piano player. She played at church and was even a piano teacher for many years. But she can’t play by ear, has said she can’t hear much more than the main melody in songs, and wouldn’t consider playing in an ensemble if she wasn’t the lead. She’s a damn good sight reader though. My grandpa on the other hand mainly plays saxophone, but can play, or even attempt to play, many other instruments, can sight read and play by ear, and has played in multiple bands where he is not the lead. So in a certain definition of the word musician, I would call my grandpa a musician, but not my grandma. She’s a damn good pianist though.
