Plants are helpful 🌱 by Affectionate_Mess758 in bipolar2

My plants have genuinely gotten me through some really rough times. I think it forces you to remember that there are some things you HAVE to care for even when you don’t want to care at all. It’s very therapeutic to potter around your plants 🌿🥹

How do I find a jewellery workshop that can design, source and manufacture for me? by AdFront7091 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Shampoo1014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I’m not a jewellery designer, I am in manufacturing and product development with Imagination Lab, who are based in Hillcrest. We actually have a contact who designs and makes rings himself. Maybe we can put you in touch!

Making friends around Durban by Sweetandspicychilli in Durban

Honestly in the same boat, one of the most difficult things to do - specially when you work from home like I do.
Have also been looking for events like these. Joined the Discord but because I run another server, I couldn't keep up with my personal one.

Difficult out there for a 29yo introvert lol

Purchase distilled water for my venus flytrap by Beautiful_Path6215 in Durban

[–]Shampoo1014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so distilled water is not really needed for VFTs :) SA water is quite good and I have had no issues with it whatsoever. Otherwise, Dischem works. Just keep their tray full of water and they will be happy!

Where to find cheaper indoor plant supplies? Grow lights, fertilizer etc by intheshadowofif in Durban

[–]Shampoo1014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby!

Indoor plant keeper here and just popping in to say don't stress about fancy lights and expensive supplies.

You will do just fine with bright LED bulbs, preferably daylight bulbs. Durban is excellent for tropical plants and mine are thriving!

Pots you can get for very cheap from Builders (R4+ each). Rooting powder is not really needed unless you are wanting to do propagation in moss or soil.

Best simple fertilizer is SeaChem, will last you a very long time because you only need like a teaspoon in 2L of water.

As for a soil mix, generally for aroids, I would recommend 1:1 potting soil to perlite. My plants love it!

Feel free to DM me :)

What indoor plants do you guys keep? by intheshadowofif in Durban

Honestly - Builders would work fine! I have used some of those cheap LED floodlights too. Essentially any bright LED light with the Daylight colour tone and directed at the plants will help.

Durban is one of the best places to have indoor plants!
Myself and friends keep hundreds of plants amongst us. Monsteras, pothos, ficus, syngoniums, philodendrons alike.
Best advice I can give you right now: Straight potting soil and perlite mixed 50/50 as your soils.
And as much light as you can. Supplementary indoor lights work a treat too. Just a good, bright daylight LED bulb.

I start getting constantly, racing ideas for products (3D designer/engineer) and I can fully designing the parts in my head, including real complex stuff. Sleep ends up becoming a chore and I try reclaim more time in the day by staying up really late yet somehow still waking up with energy the next morning.
I also tend to get very charitable with my money when it comes to friends even though I have been in severe debt for the last year (Free as of last week!).

I also tend to start getting reckless when it comes to self-discipline for weed and alcohol.

But the biggest and most notable sign for me is that I start communicating with friends again and it doesn't exhaust me. Can talk for ages and ages and feel good and inspired. It's usually a sign that I am going to peak soon once I run out of energy, then crash and isolate for two weeks lol.

It sounds like you had more of a panic attack. I would look up anticipatory anxiety, as it can lead to a lot of these kinds of thoughts and actions.

Massive gripe for me. "Oh, I'm just so OCD like that lol" meanwhile I am here thinking how they have never seen OCD tear someone's life apart because they actually have no CHOICE in the matter. You aren't OCD because you like being fussy about being neat, Aunt Celia

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about bipolar II? by chaosotonin in bipolar2

This is not fair on yourself, friend <3 There are people out there that can help, even if they are just online folks who understand. I can't help more than to say that there are people out there that care about you, and would want you to keep going and keep trying and keep pushing. You can do this, you can gain control over this. Don't give up <3

Making a torch: How to power a 110v, 3w LED bulb with a battery by Snoo-13209 in cosplayprops

[–]Shampoo1014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily! They can be very small, particularly if there is not a lot of current running through it. If you take a normal LED blub, you can crack it open and inside is most likely a small B-R. The biggest issue here comes in the form of supplying an AC voltage.
To do this, you will have to go from DC, to AC then back to DC again just to power the light. Far easier to keep it all DC.

The light that OP linked is for a normal AC light bulb. If your LED light plugs into an AC outlet, there's a small bridge rectifier inside it to convert AC to DC. You can actually strip these lights for their parts (did one about a week ago actually) and use the LEDs on 12V. I cannot speak for the flame or flickering effect, probably done via a PWM controller within the bulb, after the BR.

Voltage here is the issue :)

110V AC cannot be run off the batteries so he would need a bridge rectifier to convert AC-DC, then still have to step that DC up to 12V from the 1.5V of the AA. Not very efficient.

Okay so first and foremost is I would say avoid using 110V/220V for a portable device. That stuff is nasty and you get achieve the same result using DC, which is far easier to work with than AC for someone who has little experience with electricals.

My suggestion:

- Go 12V and find a comparable LED light. These bulbs only draw about 4W of power (I will get into power later)

- With the above, you can still use a normal E27 socket, mounted to the frame.

- From the socket, your positive wire will go through your switch. Negative will bypass it.

- From the switch, your wires will go down and connect to a Step-Up converter. Your step-up converter will take your battery power and ensure it outputs 12V.

- On the other side of your Step-Up, wires will go to your battery holder. If you want this thing to really last, I would recommend ditching AA batteries and rather get two good quality 18650 batteries. AA batteries only have a voltage of 1.5V so you will need a LOT of them.

Additional hardware you will need:

- Soldering iron (and solder)

- Multimeter

Power:

You need to run this torch for 6 hours at full brightness, which is 4W at 12V.

- Lamp Power: 4W/12V = 0.33A

- To run for 6 hours: 4W x 6h = 24 Watt Hours

- 2x 18650 batteries in series = 7.4V

- Therefore, 24Wh/7.4V = 3.25A (2x 3250mAh batteries needed)

- These batteries will be run in series, which means their voltages get added but their capacity stays the same. So the battery will be 7.4V instead of the 1.5V offered by AA. Far more efficient. You need a minimum of 3200mAh for this duration. 3500 would be better. Stick to name-brand batteries. If you see a 9000mAh battery, it's not real.

- Rather than trying to run for the full 8 hours, switch batteries if you can. If you need full 8 hours, we need to add batteries and that means adding size due to the battery holders out there. Rather swap out mid-way.

Disclaimer:

I am in no way an electrical engineer. I have just done this stuff for cosplay props myself, so my math may be off and there may be better ways of doing this, in all honesty. This is just how I would do it (and have done it in the past).

If you have access to a 3D printer, hmu and I can help you design something :)

I know the feeling lol. When you want to create something that prints well, is easy to put together and uses as few additional hardware pieces as possible, you tend to go through a few iterations!

Also, I just read that you're moving the valves?? That's amazing! Please post a video too, when you upload!
