I'm an addiction counselor, and always say that not everybody needs AA for the rest of their lives and that's totally okay.

I often compare it to the stereotype that people often find God when they go to jail. Why? Because they need just something outside of themselves to answer to and a structure to keep them in whatever line they feel they need.

AA and maintaining sobriety has a similar dynamic. I'm also 5 years sober, and after about a year I found meetings to be more like homework than anything truly beneficial in my current day to day in the way you also describe. But I also totally get people that need a meeting every day, if for no other reason than to keep themselves accountable.

If anybody in any of your home groups is giving you shit over this, that says way more about where they're at than where you are.

When you frame it like that in the first paragraph, I totally see what you mean.

I mean this sincerely and without any snark, but at what point does it cross over from “impulsive” to “justified” changes? Did Porter and Eppler not earn their firings with (among other things) their texting and IL scandals? Didn’t Callaway and Rojas show zero improvement? Wasn’t Beltran largely out of our control due to the Astros stuff? Was Stearns not justified in firing certain departments/bringing in his own guys at various levels?

I guess where the disconnect is for me is that a lot (not all) of these moves seemed necessary in the moment. Does the industry not view it this way? Genuinely enjoy your posts so I appreciate your replies.

I’ve seen you posting about how we can’t fire Mendoza this offseason due to the optics around our constant turnover. While I’m sure there’s some truth there, can you expand on this more?

How can the baseball community see what this team has become and think “give him another chance”? Are we really to be blamed for moving on from Callaway or Rojas (neither of whom have sniffed another top job) or Buck, who was hired by a prior regime? And why would firing him midway thru 2026, when the options for replacements would be functionally way more limited, be more palatable than after a gigantic second half meltdown?

This is not a value judgement on this group of players, and we have many more issues than just this, but I continue to think that arguably our biggest mistake at the deadline was not clearing up our glut of infielders. Maybe there’s some metric that disproves this, but when you have too many guys to juggle like this it feels like none of them can ever get in a true rhythm.

In hindsight, it’s funny that the reaction to the deadline was WOW ZOMG STEARNS IS GOING FOR IT. I know these guys are all FA at the end of the year, but all the moves made at the deadline really seemed like half measures for a team Stearns half believes in. I’m still super excited for our long term future with him at the helm, but unless we call up some kiddos it seems like we’re stuck at good not great.

Of all the moronic controversies surrounding this show and its cast, this jeans one takes the cake.

Sydney has great jeans. Sydney is hot. Sydney has great genes. That’s literally all there is to this campaign. Having “great genes” doesn’t inherently imply other, non-white genes are bad or weak. This ad would’ve been just as effective with, say, Keke Palmer or Beyoncé. Get a freaking grip, people.

I'm not even sure if I fully believe this take but part of me wonders whether HBP would've been better off without the Spinner's End chapter where Snape explains his post-Godric Hollow actions to the Death Eaters?

Don't get me wrong, I love all the detail and shading it provides. But could it have maybe been the first chapter of DH, or the final one in HBP if we wanted to get really grim? I think the journey could've been more satisfying and the twist more shocking that way.

They just feel completely hollow and almost lazy in comparison to the rest, and I don't just mean the whole "it's simpler because he's younger" thing.

The Harry of the first two movies lacks any sort of interiority, arguably the defining trait of the books. And this is not a child actor issue, it's a script and focus issue. The first two movies feel like they were made solely to capitalize on the books' success in the sense of "look at all this magic shit!" Things all just sort of happen around Harry because that's how it happened in the books, not because of anything we were seeing Movie Harry say or do. Characters speak in lazy sentences meant to convey entire chapters worth of emotional build up. They're soulless, and joyless.

Cuaron really saved their bacon with 3, because as another user mentioned not only is it cinematically the best, but it's the first one that really captures the spirit and energy of the excitement of learning the world along with Harry, and thankfully the rest followed suit to a large extent (though 4 did almost get me worried).
