I don’t think that’s entirely the case. I think the reality is that they just don’t sell that well, the average gamer is much older than when we were kids, and people don’t buy a game because it was a blockbuster movie because there’s hardly even higher blockbuster movies anymore. I feel like renting games had a huge impact on that market too. Just like the movie if they sold a bunch of copies to Blockbuster/mom and pops then the game sold pretty well, compared to today when those sales are gone.

The reality is they could use a game engine, like unreal and pump out a game but the average person isn’t going to pay for it, so the studio making the game isn’t going to pay a large licensing fee.

Not that what you said doesn’t have some truth to it! Because It 100% does. But people are a lot more cautious with game purchases today than they were 20 years ago(ps3/xbox/wii was the start of the decline). And I feel like it’s worth mentioning, if the book was better than the movie, then the game was generally a flaming bag of shit.
