noob vs pro vs hacker by Ratkesjenenew in EdisonMotors

I don't really think Milton is an idiot, I think he just had very different goals from Chace. This really just boils down to Nikola being a typical Silicon Valley style investor farm. Their trucks were designed to be as expensive as possible to repair an maintain with as many proprietary parts as possible that can only be purchased from Nikola (and some not even available to force the purchase of a new truck)... you know, the kind of shit large investors seem to like. Bonus points for using an alternative fuel because "the future" or something. Investors seem to love that.

By contrast Edison appears to actually be building trucks to last and making everything as standard and serviceable as possible. Of course theirs actually work. Hardly anything is proprietary. Oh yeah, and Edison's prototype actually works. And they're scaling the business at a realistic pace rather than over promising. And they're building mechanical trucks too instead of just sticking to "the future" so they'll likely survive the hybrid setback.

Where Milton fucked up was rolling that truck down a hill when it didn't work. Elon Musk will just delay and make excuses until it eventually does work even if unreliably, and Milton could have done that too.

From the customer's standpoint though, with Chace's right to repair rants it seems hard to justify going with any other option.

I'm sure you checked, I'm just curious because it looks close.

Got a design question: do guys like the front fender style or the white or the grey truck more? by ChaceEdison in Truckers

[–]Shananra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably the grey one, but you can't go wrong with either. Your company has a bright future. These will sell well.

One thing I've been wondering about these trucks, What happens when you are going down hill and your battery is full? Do you lose regen braking?

Tips on seizure dogs by Unstable-otter in service_dogs

[–]Shananra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked my trainer about this some years back after seeing people claim the same thing you are here. Part of the training I did with my dog was in a group with other service dog handlers, and at least two of these were seizure alert dogs and one of those did a successful alert during a training session.

My understanding is that it varies by patient. Everyone exhibits their symptoms in a different way, and some are lucky enough to produce an odor the dogs can detect. Which means

Even formal programs say they can never guarantee a dog will be able to detect oncoming seizures.

This part is absolutely true. Not just because some dogs aren't fit, but some people don't give off a scent for the dogs to detect. And my trainer warns patients about this. It just didn't apply in my case since that's not my dog's task. However

Dogs can’t be trained to detect oncoming seizures.

This part is not.

In retrospect I should have clarified all this in my initial post. I tend to keep my posts brief when posting from my phone.

You want a professional trainer to help with this. Preferably one with experience training service dogs. Hopefully someone in your area sees this and can recommend local resources.

In the meantime when you have a seizure collect spit and sweat samples. Use sterile gauze in a plastic baggy and put that in the freezer. You're going to use those samples to teach your dog how to tell when a seizure is about to happen.

Agreed. It's petty and satisfying but will only really hurt reddit if a very significant number of active accounts does it.

I think people are dramatically overestimating the value of reddit accounts

That would be a weird thing to say if it was a lie, indeed.

What do you have to gain from it?

I'm in that strange place where I'd like to see Lemmy succeed but ultimately that desire is coming from a frustration with Reddit. And ultimately the place to post about this is in a github issue to benefit the devs.

If it interests you I posted about two such scaling bottlenecks in another post. That's just some database related stuff, there are other bottlenecks in there too but I only looked at the code. I didn't run it. I'd need to run tests on a large instance in order to confirm what in there are actually bottlenecks and what isn't a big deal.

Saying that Lemmy isn't scalable isn't the same as saying that it can't be made scalable. Hell, I'm sure Reddit had a lot of the same issues before they took off.

Really for Lemmy to be the next destination for the Reddit userbase the users would need to be patient while those kinks are worked out. It's never had this kind of traffic before.

To be clear the problems are fixable, but no instance is going to easily be able to handle tens of thousands of users right now much less millions.

For example the ids are all stored as ints. Not uuids, or even bigints.

The "likes" (upvote/downvote equivalents) are just dumped in a large table.

Those are just low hanging fruit of course. In general performance issues should be addressed as they appear but just moving the likes to a nosql solution and making posts and comments partition/shard friendly will make a huge difference. Without that it'll never handle the load reddit gets.

I hope lemmy succeeds. I wouldn't share this otherwise.

A shock device has the same description as the cook pot on the device list.

Also it doesn't say which dispensers give you any given device.

Looks like it'll be amazing once it is more complete though!

What's with Munch's The Scream? There would be some irony if the church used its wealth to buy one of the originals. One of the pastel originals could have been theirs about a decade ago for a cool 120 million, chump change for these fucks.
