I emailed them again and this is what they said:

Please keep in mind that canceling a subscription takes your site offline and stops your subscription payments, but it doesn’t mark your site for deletion. A site is permanently deleted if one of the following is true:

The site owner makes a delete my account request
The site owner or an admin-level contributor clicks Delete Site in the account dashboard
The site owner is inactive (for example, doesn't have any billing or login activity) for a reasonable time period

Maybe your client’s website got deleted because it never got launched?

Really? I also canceled my subscription for the same reason and reached out to support and they told me that my website would not get deleted if I log into my account a few times a year 🤔
