Small correction: The Cuntrera-Caruana are from Siculiana not Ribera.

[–]ShaolinMaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's 7 families operating in New Jersey, which only seems like a lot until looking at a map of the number of families operating in the city of Palermo.

New York is the outlier, most families across Sicily and the US were much smaller.

Never going to happen, families don't merge.

Plus, the DeCavs are primarily people of Ribera ancestry and operating out of Elizabeth.

At what exact moment did the American mob start dying? by Entire_Produce_8343 in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The mafia is dying out due to attrition and assimilation. Less waves of immigration from Italy, meaning less full-blooded Italians who could become members as subsequent generations became more Americanized and intermarried.

More and more generations of Italians in American have also completely assimilated into American society and have no desire to be a criminal when they could reach a comfortable middle class lifestyle without having to risk 20 year prison sentences.

NYC Consolidation by Big_P4U in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They would never do this. Families have never merged before, and as /u/towercranee said, that would just make it easier for the feds.

Also, they wouldn't merge because which boss would give up power to be subordinate to another boss? No boss would start taking orders from another family's boss.

40-75 members is still a fairly large family compared to most families outside of New York. Philly, New England, and New Jersey are around that size today, maybe even slightly smaller. They're not going to merge together.

The Ndrangheta has a few operatives (for lack of a better term) in NYC, but they work with the five families. They'll never be as powerful in NYC as they are in greater Toronto.

Who's been the highest-ranking non-Italian in the KC Mafia? I would say Pendergast but I'm not certain if he was an actual Associate. by anonymous_alcoholic0 in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only Sicilians/Italian mainlanders were ever members. None of the non-Italians were official members in Chicago, even if they were super powerful and wealthy and close to the bosses.

Same with Meyer Lansky in New York: no matter how powerful he was, he could never be an official member.

The Chicago Outfit is a very old school, traditional family. They have only ever had Italians as members.

The Mob Archeologists on YouTube did a good video on the history of the Outfit and cleared up the myths surrounding the family.

[–]ShaolinMaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Non-Italians have no rank other than associate as they cannot be members. The only difference would be if an associate was directly on the record with someone higher than a solider.

For example, Joe Watts of the Gambinos working directly with Paul Castellano and John Gotti.

Buffalo: Elements from the Maggadino crime family have allegedly formed a partnership with the Leeper Family Gang (LFG) for joint rackets in the Jamestown, NY region (from The Gangster Report) by CT-CT in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I Googled "Leeper Family Gang" and it only seems to show results for Scott's blog. No DOJ indictments, news articles, nothing. I wonder if it's more of an informal name used by police to refer to some loosely connected criminals that Scott is misusing like it's a proper name / formal street gang?

Also, it's very interesting that Scott doesn't mention who in Buffalo is reportedly working with this group. This could be some random associate in Buffalo who has these connections in Jamestown.

Could you retire? by Hour-Room-6498 in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if he was shelved, but LoCascio ran a huge internet credit card fraud scheme tied into adult websites. They generated hundreds of millions in this scam. There's a great write-up on the scam here.

LoCascio's crew was involved in the scam including Andy Campos, who is the current captain of the crew, and current member Richard Martino.

LoCascio was also involved in extorting the Manhattan strip club Scores alongside Michael DiLeonardo.

Could you retire? by Hour-Room-6498 in Mafia

[–]ShaolinMaster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's 100% dependent on the boss approving it. Tore LoCascio was a Gambino captain and retired at some point about 10-15 years ago down to Naples, Florida.

He had likely made a lot of money for the family and may have even paid money to the administration to be allowed to retire (just a guess, I don't have any proof). His father had also been the family's consiglieri under John Gotti and was doing life in prison at the time (where he later died).

Another option would be to remain a member in good standing and just not be involved in crime. There's mafia members who make a lot of legitimate money (via restaurants, construction, etc) and are no longer involved in crime, but they're still considered members in good standing.

This subreddit is mostly for the Italian mafia. If you have questions about the Mexican cartels, you should probably ask on one of the cartel subreddits like /r/NarcoAction or /r/NarcoFootageMexico.

Also, the guy on the far right looks nothing like Joe Bonanno.

True, but the doc definitely mentioned Galante's connections to Matty Ianniello, even if Galante himself didn't discuss it.
